FFC's theatre background has him doing a lot of rehearsals & finding motivations with the actors. He writes & rewrites & rewrites again until it gels with his vision. His filmmaking style is focused on performance. Whereas GL is an extremely skilled technical director. His movies come together in the editing room & his focus seems to be on the narrative structure. It's often said there are "actor's directors" & "technical directors". I can't think of a better example than those two.

Imagine if Lucas were still involved in Star Wars and he and FFC did book of Boba Fett together! Then i think we’d get the kind of “star was gangster” story we wanted lol

It's sad we didn't get George's Sequels as they were to be about Darth Maul becoming the godfather of crime and trying to overtake the Republic. It would've been amazing to see this as it builds off the ending of Return of the Jedi perfectly.

George should have stayed at American Zoetrope while doing Star Wars. I feel like starting his own companies Lucasfilm, ILM, and eventually other companies made him more focused on the business aspects rather than his own passions as a filmmaker alone. Especially since he's said many times even after selling Lucasfilms he only wanted to smaller films like his early career.

why did he never make his "small art films" that he wanted to do so much? did he do them under an alias or something? I would love to see them but I can't find anything about it

@@knurdyob Other than THX 1138, American Grafitti, and his college films, he never made another. Everything for his career was based around Star Wars and Indiana Jones. He says his main reasons for not directing for a long time except for the prequels was because he decided to raise his kids. He could start making his smaller films now that he no longer has to worry about making money for Lucasfilms since he sold it off, but I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon.

He in fact has. Lucas was asked by Coppola to direct Apocalypse Now. Lucas declined choosing instead to work on the Star Wars projects. Thank god, Lucas wanted to shoot it as a fictional documentary on 35 mm B/W film and had he directed it would have been a huge flop.

Cameron Pond Lucas's idea sounds interesting, especially when you consider that Lucas wanted to film it guerrilla style while the war was still going on, but I doubt it would've retained the timeless quality of Coppola's film.

George's future was supposed to be a Documentary Director and not a Producer. Star Wars wasn't supposed to be as big of a success as it is and George was going to go on to do a couple more small movies and finish his career with tales of Race car driving docs...

10 years late, but I don't know why you're saying "thank god." The realization of Apocalypse Now that we got is great, but Lucas's idea sounds really interesting as well. Like everything, the quality of the work would have ultimately been determined by the execution, but the idea definitely has artistic merit.

He's done countless upon countless things within film. His contributions are massively overlooked because of Star Wars. They range from being a cameraman on the Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter concert you can get via Criterion to pioneering the template of what television has become with Young Indy. Pixar started at Lucasfilm. I could go on and on. It's really a pity that people undervalue him as much as they do. He's my hero and I'm forever grateful for the lessons he's taught me over the years.

@@zoetropeguardian George Lucas is a pioneer. He constantly tried to push the boundaries of filmmaking both from an artistic perspective and from a technical perspective. Because of that, some of the things he made were terrific, and some of them were pretty rough.
