I don't think he necessarily regrets it, but I don't think he's happy with what Star Wars has become. George is a smart guy. He knew that this would happen. You gotta remember that Lucasfilm was kind of in a bad spot at the time. They were losing money and many jobs were on the line. George was also getting old and he needed family time. He didn't want to spend another ten years making a new trilogy. I'm not a fan of what Disney has done to Star Wars but they kind of dug Lucasfilm out of a hole. Bob gave George a deal he couldn't refuse. He had to pass the torch at some point. I think George just wishes they used his stuff that he had planned and stayed more true to what Star Wars is.

While it IS sad, in the end this was arguably better for star wars. Why? before disney ripped the franchise apart an crawled inside it to keep warm, either the prequels were looked down on or there were bunch of debates that'd never get settled about the WHAT IF or WHAT could have been. And if we're all being real with ourselves here, star wars was starting to fade into the background of our memories when thry bought it. and he was going broke. Despite the new stuff being terrible, it served two HUGE goals. 1, it brought it back into the public eye and reignited our love for it. and 2, it vindicated George an his story in EVERY WAY. And it's kind of poetic... Because now we'll continue the carry that torch for his story. And the loss of what could have been will drive an inspire people in our generation to make their own versions for generations way after them to enjoy and be influenced by. In a way, Disney struck down George's Star Wars only to make it stronger than they could possibly imagine

​@@mrlij6534As far as I understand, they thought George's story would fail, getting caught up in the narrative that everyone hated the prequels, so they tried to do the opposite of them. Too late did they realize their mistake, after TLJ, trying to do damage control with Rise of Skywalker (and they struggled to realize even then, thinking Solo flopped because people didn't want to see anymore "star wars stories" or because of fatigue, when it was mostly a reaction after TLJ)

The 80's were insane. Movie stars were STARS, movies were a huge event and Star Wars was everywhere. There were Star Wars toys and stickers in cereal boxes, SW yoyo's, glow in the dark tee shirts, SW arcade games. Times were hard in Ireland in the 80's but at the same time it was as good and as magical as everyone today imagines it was.

What gets me is that Disney strayed away from Georges plans completely out of spite. The biggest problem with the new movies is that they had no plan. Nothing was thought out. After episode 7 everyone wanted to know who Rey is. What is her lineage? And Daisy didn't know. Disney didn't know. They hadn't freaking decided yet!! And that's why the movies are trash. They just wung it. Even though they had a brilliant plan layed out for them by George. They instead decided to go with no plan. It's so insulting to George and star wars fans everywhere.

You're absolutely right, the hype for the prequel trilogy was insane. I consider myself blessed to have been a part of it. I was just a little boy when The Phantom Menace came out and I've been hooked ever since. Like you said, the merchandise was everywhere. I remember then when Attack of the Clones came out and shortly after the 2D animated Clone Wars on Cartoon Network. I was so excited for Revenge of the Sith and I appreciate all of these works even more now in the present day as a 30 year old man. The sequels just don't do the story justice by any means. I truly wish someone would tell George's version of what the sequel story should have been. God bless

one of the greatest moment of my life was that hype for Episode 1....I remember the 2 year countdown... It was epic...The video games were amazing too... Even TPM PC game had a super SW ambiance to it....The whole openeing when we saw young Obi Wan was the coolest moment ever!

I was one of the people in his 20s that was completely disappointed with the phantom menace and thought George Lucas had no idea what Star Wars was. It took me 20 years to appreciate the prequels and thats because Disney completely destroyed anything that Star Wars was. It often means that they never really understand why they had that opinion or that they were just adopting someone else's opinion for themselves for some social reason. I always looked at Starwars as a whole that compliments itself. Each episode from 1-6 is a masterpiece in its own way in my opinion. They all share similar faults but in different contexts. However those faults only add to their charm and are what make them uniquely Star Wars

@invaderIRK1 Agreed! This is a weird trend where people are suddenly looking back at mediocre products and calling them masterpieces due to the state of modern entertainment. That only leads to lowered expectations and anything even remotely decent will be regarded as the new Godfather, it's hilarious.

I think it's a crying shame the hate that has been directed at George Lucas over the years. Fro the Special Edition/Prequel haters to all the Disney shills that desperately try to prop up the new garbage. This man is a visionary that has given me a lifetime of entertainment and wonderful characters. God bless him.

I have vague recollections of seeing the original Star Wars as a child. My parents had gone to see it (to make certain it was kid safe), then my mother took me a few days after they had seen it. I was hooked, just as were many others. Then 1999, a Thursday (it was my scheduled day off that day, as I had Thursday/Friday as my weekend from work), I sat down at the first showing at the middle of the day in a small town movie theater. There were about a dozen-plus in attendance. I watched it. It was different, wasn't what I had expected, but, it wasn't hate-worthy. I still watch it, 25 years later. I've been watching this 12 hour brief analysis of the Phantom Menace over the past week. I think the movie has aged well, as Mr. Lucas seems to be capable of capturing contemporary society and then projecting a what-if on an astro-theology mythology scale in a sci-fantasy stage.

@@Jurglenuts I'm inclined to agree with this sentiment, well most of it anyways. The prequels were... Well, they were what they were. Some cool ideas, interesting concepts, a good bit of world-building that set the stage for the OT; but mired in bad dialogue, questionable writing/directing, and horrendous CGI. I was a kid when the first wave of "Special Edition" releases hit the theaters and I saw them all, and with the exception of the added Jabba scene in ANH, I liked the changes. But the more recent Special Edition releases definitely weren't great or even necessary. The one bit I will disagree on though is Maul... I was fine with him coming back because this time around he actually has character instead of being the edgy, brooding, and silent sith-lackey.

I love all 6 Star Wars movies and always will!

One of my biggest issues with the whole sale is how the Expanded Universe was scrapped. The teams that oversaw the continuity of books, comics and games in line with the movies were fantastic! I feel a lot of the haters of the prequels fake to realize, whether out of ignorance or just animosity, the stories that filled in the gaps of the movies were phenomenal! The Star Wars machine was glorious to be a part of. Disney crushed it, burned it and blew the ashes in the wind. The toy market alone took a massive hit; one wave of characters and that was it. Not the continual waves of back corner characters. A lot could be said about the books and this new concept being peddled, but like George said, “You give it up.” For me, nothing post Disney is worth the time.

I liked the original Star Wars trilogy. I never gave a crap about the Expanded Universe. I have never and will never care about the continuity of books, comics and games. This is just marketing crap. The Disney people have failed to do right by Star Wars, but the franchise needs new creative input, not a recycling of nostalgia and memorabilia.

The EU was not exactly scrapped. Disney purchased LucasFilm, which had never recognized the EU as official canon. Disney did not purchase Random House, Dark Horse Comics, or any other publisher of licensed Star Wars EU content. Contrary to popular belief, that means LucasFilm did not own the rights to any of the EU content. EU creators were licensed to play in the sandbox and create their own original characters and story lines. LucasFilm would have had to negotiate licensing deals with individual publishers and the EU content creators to use their original content. For example, Disney did not drop the name of “Slave One” for Boba Fett’s ship. LucasFilm did not own the rights to the name. Those rights had to be negotiated on a case by case, use by use, basis.

@@thesharpercoder Good points. The Cartoon Network Clone Wars series showed us where Anakin got his scar and introduced General Grievous. The end of the series was the beginning of Episode 3. Disney does not own Funko Pop or Mattel or Golden Books, yet they are in the “sandbox” as you put it. So yes, some minutiae has been bought back but it is a mere pittance of what was created, and for many fans (myself included), a core of Star Wars that was given the go ahead by Lucas, was trashed.

Star Wars was so impactful to my taste in storytelling and music. I ended up going into concert band in High School because of the score from the og 6. Star Wars was special to a lot of us 90s kids as much as it was to our parents.

I was 10 in 77. I can tell you it was like The Beatles. It literally changed our lives and had societal impacts. The whole era, through to 83-84 waa time of awe and wonder. ET, Raidars, Alien, Close Encounters, Star Trek movies, these where special events and exciting. But yes, 99 to 2005 waa an extraordinary period for moviez.

We should fundraise the money to buy it back from Disney, make an offer impossible to reject. It genuinely hurts me so bad to see what has happened to our Star Wars. My father showed me it when I was very young, and his father with him, was one of the only things I have left that connected me to him now he is gone and they went and ruined it, im partly glad he hasn’t seen what has happened to his space fantasy. Thank you George Lucas, fuck you disney.

Anya Kuro, Nomi Sunrider, Ashoka, Leia, and the list goes on. We had no problem with female characters prior to hell brought on by Disney. Fun fact Anya Kuro is an amazing Jedi who fought toe to toe with an experienced Vader in her old age and seriously pushed him. she was even referred to as a worthy opponent by Vader himself. Had she trained Anakin he would have mastered his dark tendencies and would have never became Vader. She was the David Goggins among the Jedi in how she trained her students pushing them to the edge of what they were capable of while testing their stance in the light side of the force. Constantly digging and pushing for any signs of self doubt, anger, confusion, or insecurity so her students can become unshakable in mind and body. She had such a connection/relationship to the living force once Vader finally beat her she immediately appeared to him as a force ghost before Obi Wan did as well as having unique force abilities such as bending the light around her to turn invisible or the ability to teleport to different places. Her unshakable devotion to the force rivaled that of Qui Gonn Jinn but her methods were on the opposite side of the spectrum. Due to her harsh training methods other masters called her “the dark woman” a title she embraced after giving up her real name as a show of sacrifice to the force and having zero attachments in the world .

Exactly. The list goes on and on. It's so laughable that Disney claims that we're "sexist" for not liking female characters when they've been around since the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Let me make it perfectly clear that nobody, not one, hates female characters in Star Wars, Disney, Marvel, or anything. We literally grew up with them, We just don't like poorly written female characters. It's as simple as that.

One of my best childhood memories was my mom letting my skip school to go see Episode 1, and then us going to K-Mart afterwards to buy a bunch of the figures. I got a Darth Maul double saber from my grandparents for Christmas and it's still one of my favorite memories. Got Yoda's, Dooku's, Vader's, and Luke's saber for my birthday throughout a couple years and it was magic. If Doc and Marty were here, I'd go back to that time for a while.

Who ever they'd get to direct it would ruin those scripts too..

I blame him for selling… he should’ve come up with a deal that would be extremely beneficial to Disney, but not selling… I’m pretty sure there was a way, kinda like how Disney can use and make spider-man movies… have Lucasfilm working… rolling movies and keep it working as a separate company without being hands on involved… being the curator of what should happen and be about.

If you re-read the statement, it’s so out of character for George. Magic isn’t made by amateurs? That’s exactly what he was when he made Star Wars! The way it’s worded is not something I’d expect him to say too. All in all, that statement was almost certainly not written by George himself, it’s too obvious.

Because the options were far, far worse. The one thing George knows about Bob Iger is that he makes Disney a LOT of money... and he's got a vested interest in making MONEY at this point in his life so he can build his museum and leave his kids a legacy. The thought that George doesn't have any heirs is WRONG --- he has four kids Amanda Lucas, Katie Lucas, Jett Lucas, and his youngest daughter that was born in 2013. He has SOMETHING to leave them.... Lucasfilm wasn't something any of them wanted to inherit. But best believe he'll want to leave them the MONEY.

Part of it was his need to get involved, if he still had any power he’d wanna keep going and thus wouldn’t spend time with his kids. Also, filoni is the worst choice. The stuff he’s done with Disney has been horrible and TCW was a mess. Everyone was mischaracterized and he created so many plot holes with the movies the show was based on and the OT that it’s inexcusable. Sam Witwer, despite his being only an actor, should’ve been his heir. He’s young, George could teach him, and he cares deeply about all of OG SW, and he’s a great storyteller in interviews

Filoni is the reason Star Wars is in such a mess nowadays, because George gave him too much power to change things in his image. He was likely giddier than a schoolgirl when the franchise was signed over to Disney because it gave him even greater freedom to tell his stories, ergo steal from much more talented creators after they threw the EU out the window.

Filoni is sort of an ADHD writer. Just look at the pace and the structure of clone wars. It just was bam bam bam, this that this. It had hardly a moment to breath. And the stuff he introduced? Oh no. It would have been a terrible choice.

This is the juiciest interview he has done since the Charlie Rose one in 2015. I loved it when he addressed the Special Editions! To be fair, they could have at least found a way to take off those black bars in that 2006 dvd release. Otherwise I certainly dont begrudge Lucas for not wanting to restore a version of the movie that he doesnt like.

When luke skywalker tried to kill kylo Luke Would have been turning to the dark side with his anger and hate especially Daisy's character at the end. She should have turned into the sith master, or at least it would have made a better ending, imho

George has no heirs??? He has children. What about Katie who did a lot of writing for Clone Wars? He could have insisted consulting oversight into the contract. Ultimately, George has to swallow the 💩 Disney forces on everyone because he signed EVERYTHING away for $$$. You reap what you sew.

Even today many of the criticisms of the PT are BS and come from a place of nostalgia. They were upset because of things like jar jar reminding them that these movies made for kids and they’re adults, the politics because it’s fairly adult for Star Wars, because it’s different from the OT for obvious reasons. The PT has always been good, and the prequels hate only existed in a small group of OT fans and Hollywood. It was only years after with OT fans dunking on it on KZread that hating them became mainstream

I was 5 years old in 1977 when A New Hope came out. In fact I saw the movie before “A New Hope” was added to the title later. Star Wars changed my short life at 5 during that time. Not only did Star Wars change cinema, but it really did change the World. Everything was and had to be at a faster pace after that movie came out. All cinema had to be faster. All political maneuvering had to be faster. The “Cold War” had to escalate. Troubles in the Middle East. The world was changed.

Personally, I love all of the recent Star Wars content ... it's not all great, but, it's Star Wars! I vividly remember the almost 20 year gap with no (on-screen) Star wars content so, for me this is a dream come true. I love the universe that George created and am perfectly fine with others telling stories in that universe.

What Theory feels about episode 1 is the way i felt in 77 when the movie first came out. You could feel the excitement in the air.

Damn when you talk about the time of the prequels you got me choked up. I remember those times so much, my oldest son was turning 4 that year and I got him so many toys to relive the time when I got all the toys in 80s (born in 76). I miss those times so much!

You are my favorite star wars person to listen to any time I'm driving or doing house work or just myself I throw your videos on to listen to them you are truly the greatest when it comes to star wars and honestly taught me alot about the old republic and older characters that I have come to love. Bob Iger didn't force George to do anything, but maybe he deceived him, or coaxed him, or whatever the correct word is. George has heirs, so if Iger somehow was able to used that lie to convince George to sell, then George simply let himself be deceived. All I would have to say to that is, "George, dude, what drugs were you on that day?"

Creating this place to gather together and ask for stories that are as deep or deeper then they are visually pleasing. People don't want to just escape for the sake of escaping (maybe sometimes but that is not what this story or franchise was) we want to escape to a story with meaning, purpose, discovery, challenge, growth, learning from good and bad examples for our kids and the future of humanity to move in a positive direction. If they won't make them then soon enough they might create a large enough void for a new way of story telling to come to the front. ... Thanks. Wanted to comment for the algorithm and this came out. I remember seeing Walmart in 1990 when I was 3 years old and seeing all shelves at Walmart full of Star Wars merchandise. I was in heaven 🤩. And even some toy stores in the mall loaded with Star Wars toys as well. I miss that nostalgia.

We had so many fights with those plastic lightsabers with the telescopic blades! Every single person in my life has at one point picked one up, turned it on, flicked their wrist to shoot the blades out, made the "SZHHHOOOM" sound, and looked at it just for a second. For a split second life paused and my parents were little kids again. Everybody holding one of those was briefly transported to a galaxy far, far, away. The exact same reaction in real life as in ANH when Luke ignites the lightsaber and is in awe of it. Such a lovely shared cultural currency that we as a society are sadly being robbed of. It crossed generations, tastes, and any kind of barrier that lesser media stumbles over. If somehow an un-published, half-finished work by Beethoven, Mozart, Van Gogh, or Monet was discovered and shared with the world only to then be given over to someone with no appreciation for its cultural value and completed in their own selfish way people would understandably be upset. It would create a visceral response. Star Wars is probably the last piece of art that brought people together on a similar level. It is not "high art" but, in the same way as we all know the works of those artists (even without realising it), our families, friends, and all of global society knows "No.....I am your father!". It is sad that this legacy has not been given its due respect. Putting questions over quality aside, the lack of respect is the nail in the coffin. Entertainment and media have grown and changed so that the effects and visual amazement of Star Wars is no longer novel, but, much like how Lord of the Rings has the Silmarillion, Star Wars has years of lore and development that create a feeling of authenticity, realism, and escapism all at once. We can knowingly watch, read, or play a made up story while at the same time allow ourselves to believe, even if only for the duration of the experience, that it is real and we are part of another universe. Star Wars, particularly the shows and movies, no longer provides that, and it means for kids and future generations it will not ignite their imaginations and is therefore very unlikely to draw them in. Being the right age for the Prequels, LotR, and Harry Potter has provided me, my brother, my wife, and all our friends common language and a sense of shared experience that bonds us. We all remember seeing one of these, remember our parents reading one of them to us, remember nights spent debating and discussing events, and it has enriched our lives. Some of my generation are now are starting to share it with their own kids and getting a whole new experience from it. Modern offerings do not stack up to this. Game of Thrones probably came the closest, but only a few years after the show has ended and I don't see any kind of similar devotion to "the big 3" for that property. It is a sad state of affairs Star Wars finds itself in. There seems little hope of a return to form on screen, doesn't there? Each new project announced I find myself getting less and less interested in something that for most of my life has been a source of joy and wonder. For now I guess we'll have to rely on the pre-Disney media out there and keep finding enjoyment in new ways. Your lore videos for example! I really enjoy your channel and appreciate what you do. It's about the only Star Wars stuff I do enjoy these days. Thanks for what you do, cheers!

The dumbest part of the whole situation is that Disney HAD a cashcow, IF they had only followed George's ideas. If they'd stuck too it, they'd have got all the $$$ that they wanted. What they earned with the 3 dumpster fire movies was a fraction of what could have been.

Great video! Somewhat sad that he wasn't able to have his vision continued. I do remember the SW mania in '99 it was crazy. I didn't get the negative reaction around the prequels. Also I remember waiting in line for three showings to get in to see "A New Hope", which wasn't known as that at the time.

Dude speaking of episode one, the Pepsi One can man.. I remember that so clearly haha. And the mini lightsaber toys, not sure if my younger brother and i got them from a fast food meal or from something else but they where way smaller then the regular lightsaber toys (we where really poor, but we cherished those). We loved the first 6.. shame how its turned out.

I have loved star wars since I was a kid. I'm a gay dude and am all for having people of color and what not in the movies and shows. I'm not ok with abusing what lucas made to throw their political agenda in our faces. Not a fan of them picking directors who practically say they hate star wars. I don't care about lesbian space witches I care about them destroying the meaning of starwars. I'm sick of seeing anaking bashed.
