For a long time, I had been interested in creating a piece of music that can be entirely written on one page, so that the entire structure of the music is fully presented in a single "image" (i.e. this one page of music). This is the approach that I adopted in my quintet Druskininkanonas, composed in 2011 for Lithuania's Druskomanija contemporary music festival. This quintet includes four performers on stage (alto flute, oboe, B-flat clarinet, and viola) playing an extremely lively and frenzied canon, and one bassoonist behind the audience who plays the canon theme at their own pace. The quartet on stage uses the same page of the score but begins playing at different times, to create canon. The canon depicts a gradual transition from very high and closely clustered sounds to more open and stable harmonic textures. As each performer approaches the final section of the music, they begin to repeatedly play a concise theme one after another, so that eventually all four performers are playing the same music in more-or-less unison (thus transforming the music from four independent parts into highly unified music). This final section also rises again, this time more dreamlike, and at this moment, the fifth performer appears from afar, playing a hint of the canon theme, as a vague recollection of the beginning of the music.
Druskininkanonas was the earliest composed piece feature in my Composer Portrait Concert in 2024. It was completed the year before I moved to Asia and is representative of my first creative period. Like this performance, this work was also the opening piece at the final concert of the Druskomanija contemporary music festival, where it elicited a very enthusiastic response from the audience.
(Druskininkanonas )
