George Groves Boxing Club | Referee Ian John-Lewis

Спорт

George Groves Boxing Club | Referee Ian John-Lewis
George Groves and Dec Taylor are joined this week by referee Ian John-Lewis.
John-Lewis was infamously downgraded for his scorecard in Josh Taylor’s controversial victory over Jack Catterall back in February 2022.
The undisputed light-welterweight clash saw Taylor awarded a split-decision victory and, ahead of their rematch, John-Lewis is here to give his side of the story.
As the subject matter in this episode is a controversial topic, we reached out to the British Boxing Board of Control and they responded by informing Boxing News they had nothing further to add following their original statement.

Seems impossible. There aren’t many “A star” officials, it’s the familiar names we all know and hate which used to include Ian - they are the ones who cover the domestic shows for the major promoters. Catterall’s been on the scene for a long time, their paths have almost certainly crossed many times, pretending not to know who he is comes across like an excuse.

According to the WBC scoring criteria available on their website you do not get scored for forward foot pressure or “pushing the fight”. The only activity you can score is clean. effective. work. Astonishing a judge of 30+ years experience doesn’t know this. I don’t believe him. This guy is a crook hiding behind “you don’t have the authority to question me” line… shouldn’t ever judge or ref a fight again he can’t be trusted!

Just rewatched Taylor-Caterall Rd. 4. In fairness to IJL, both fighters are equally scrappy, but it's hard to see Taylor nicking it. The only decent combo came from Caterall, where he landed 3 or 4 scoring shots. He also landed a lovely body shot at one point. Meanwhile, I only counted Taylor scoring once all round to the head (right at the end), and perhaps to the body once or twice. Neither excelled in terms of defence, ring generalship or effective aggression, but I might just shade Caterall in all of them (Taylor was sloppy as hell all round). I wouldn't downgrade a ref on this round, but it looks a poor call to give it to Taylor. IMO.

This really is quite a shocking interview - and makes me question a lot of what happened that night between Taylor & Catterall I. Just watched the last few rounds again - and it was so scrappy, you could make a case for Taylor taking three of the four, playing devil's advocate. But Ben Davison repeatedly says to Taylor before the last: 'You need a stoppage...you need a stoppage.' They knew he was losing...they knew their man had been beaten. IJL had Taylor one round UP after 7. Hearing this tool of an individual take us through their boxing journey, it really does scare the hell out of me in terms of objectivity and just having the minerals to be an official judge in such an important sporting arena. This is all very dodgy indeed.

Scoring a fight is subjective. 3 judges, 3 “opinions” from 3 different angles. Boxing, certainly at the highest level needs to implement changes. Judges scores for each round be made aware, so there is no doubt who is winning the fight (on the cards anyway) at least that would give some clarity.

I have to admit, I'm pretty astounded by the scoring example Ian gives around 13:20, that if neither fighter has landed but one is consistently moving forward you give him the round. Surely that's an even round!

To be honest it sounds fair enough if one guy is moving forward and trying to push the action and the other is constantly running away. I still don't like the guy though!

@@reel_reflections it’s just not how they score it. I don’t make the rules, but I agree with em. If neither of you do much but one is being negative and not landing, he loses the round. I agree with it. Otherwise there’s no reward for being a positive fighter. It’s like football. If there was judges on a nil/nil game - they’d reward those that actually pushed the game as opposed to not trying to force it.

You Fraud... One of the most blatant showings of bias foul play ever to be on show at a world title fight. 114-111 was both an insult and ridiculous. An absolute joke of a judge, you destroyed Jack's right to be an undisputed world champion.
