    ... especially when there is supposed to be a separation between church and state - swearing on a Bible or any other religious text is unconstitutional! I saw Carlin in Las Vegas in 1999. He really changed my thinking on religion and many other things - I credit him with my personal enlightenment, so to speak. Thanks, Reverend George!!

    When I was growing up, my grandparents always told me that wearing a hat inside was a sign of disrespect. BUT, for this, pretty legitimate reason; "Wearing a hat indoors, for hundreds of years, meant that you were cold. By keeping your hat on, you're telling the people who you are visiting that you're cold. But if you take your hat off, it lets them know that their home is warm and comfortable." Let's leave the religion out of it =) The FUNCTION of the hat is what's important. Religion doesn't care about functionality, lol.

    It was also because a hat was worn to protect one from the elements, meaning they could be dirty (especially early london where they may be covered in soot or dust, rain anywhere else) and it was proper to remove them upon entering your own house, not just being polite when visiting. It's also why you'd especially want or be asked to remove them at the dinner table.

    George Carlin's comedy will remain timeless for one simple reason; he never mocked minorities or marginalised groups. He only ever crapped on concepts and institutions because those things deserved it. Comedians nowadays are fuckin laaazy. They will mock trans people, gay people, people of color, and others just to make a quick buck. And in a hundred years, modern comedians will be considered tacky for doing that. But not Carlin. Carlin criticised things that deserved mocking. And he was one of the only comedians to criticise the troops and military. Just shows you how ahead of his time he was. Many millennia from now, George will be revered for his philosophical and barrier-breaking comedy. Meanwhile the slobs of today will be mere footnotes in history and washed away with the rest of their mindless garbage.

    The issue of hats is really religious misogamy. From 1 Corinthians 11:5-16. "Every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man."

    You may not remember the cartoon Animaniacs, but they had a recurring bit "Buttons & Mindy." Mindy was a little toddler girl, and Buttons was a dog. Mindy's big running gag was to ask "Why?" to every statement from a grown-up telling her the way of the world, until the answers reached absurdity, at which point she would just say "Okay, I love you, bye bye," and walk away. George did the same, just without the ending.

Give everyone his observations on things that piss him off and exactly what he thinks about them. The man was an absolute treasure to the world and sad fact is a lot of them missed it. There's another part you did 2 months ago, people call the segment "Rights" where he just stops trying to be funny and lets loose. Although he ends up being funny anyways, he just can't help it LOL

    Funny enough about hats, their purpose and (purely functional use) was to shield your head from the sun and over heating, so not much point to wearing them inside that's why they say it's disrespectful to leave it on in someone's house, because it's saying the house isn't able to protect you like it's supposed to. But now it's got fashion included so sometimes people overlook it because like you said a hat for mainly function like a cap would be taken off because it's not needed

  • @mikec6733
    @mikec67333 жыл бұрын

    George makes sense about the hats in religion, BUT, one can also step back and see that these kind of traditions help to create bonds amongst community members. Seriously. The continuity, over generations, with everybody participating, naturally strengthens the bonds amongst the people, thereby supporting the mental health of the people. Yeah, many traditions may seem arbitrary or stupid, but they can actually be very helpful to the peace and wellness of individuals and the community as a whole.

    Put your hat on the hatrack!!! That's what the hatrack is for!!! It is considered polite to take off your hat when asked to--even your bill-brimmed ballcap--unless it is worn for medical or religious reasons. If you do not understand why, ask why when you are asked to remove your hat. You also must remove your hat when in court, failure to do so can have you expelled from the courtroom... unless it is worn for medical or religious reasons. The word "Disheveled"--generally used to describe a person who appears unbathed or beaten in dirty or grimy or tattered clothes--actually just means "having the hair uncovered" or "without a hat".

    It was considered impolite to wear your hat indoors... Anywhere indoors. Baseball hats too. Even when I was a kid, but yeah I'm old... Not "Carlin old"... But old. ;-)

    I agree with Carlin when it comes to nationalism; but also pride can be celebration of survival/facing constant challenges due to being a specific ethnicity, especially in the US. If media, historical events, current tragedies, politicians, and non-minority citizens are threatening your daily life and telling you that you are inferior to white Americans due to your race, you have a right to take pride in being what society is telling you to be ashamed of. This applies to Asian-Americans, Latinx, black Americans, etc.

    I'm not Catholic nor do I follow any religious dictations. However, there is one area of Catholic religion that puzzles me..... If devout Catholic men follow their religion by strictly heeding to the ten commandments, why then did a lot of Catholic men (on both sides in WW2), go to war and willingly or under military command, kill people? How do they justify this obvious disregard of their fifth commandment (thou shalt not kill)? I actually put this question to a Catholic priest several years ago and he got quite angry with me for asking it. Undaunted, I stood my ground and insisted he answer me. After fumbling for an answer, he finally said "Oh, I guess God understood what the situation was on the battlefield and absolved them from sin" He then added... "You should be careful when you question God's wisdom, he will punish people like you on judgement day"... and he walked away. It was then that I understood what the term "put the fear of God into them" meant.

    Removing hats is a big military thing. And if you're going to a nice dinner, you wouldn't have a hat on. You'd never wear a hat at the dinner table.
