George Best vs England | Dominating World Champions | 03.05.1969

Спорт

Best player in the world faces reigning world champions. Incredible performance by George Best who was simply unplayable that night. My personal highlight is crowd's reaction every time he gets the ball - as the commentator noticed: "here go the squeals again".

I was born 10 days before this game and 7 years later I would be in a soccer camp in Southern California taking passes from Bestie while he showed us the basics of soccer. Still have my kids LA Aztecs season ticket from 76 on my wall with the framed Dads root beer ad of him in my office. All the kids just loved him and our coaches told us this was the guy who would be our idol once we learned what he had done as a player before he came here. American kids had no soccer heroes at that time so we learned all we could about George. He had really fallen from his peak in such a short time but he was a god to any kid who grew up in So Cal in the 70s who had the slightest interest in the sport. Glad he made the effort to keep playing and we got a glimpse of him for 5 or so years in the USA.

Best accomplished so much with simple cuts and feints, which is about all he could do with the balls and pitches of that era. Put Best in the modern era, with the excellent pitches, better balls and more protection from the rules, and he’d be able to add drag backs and other “futsal” moves with the sole of his foot. He’d be unstoppable!

It wasnt always mud and guts, some league pitches were impeccable and firm and Best really did work his magic on all pitch conditions, but his tenure at Man U will stand as testament to his skills and talents.

Pelé did all the futsal tricks & tekker skills, done today. Sombrero, rabona, back heel chops, stepovers, no touch dummies, body feints, drag back's.Even playing, one-two's of defenders shin's! He was the original tekker player, that later players from Zico, Maradona & later like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, CR7, Neymar moulded aspects of their game from.

He had to play on bad pitches with a far heavier ball and much tougher tackling. Today he would be regarded as least as good as Messi. Phyl staunton, to make this debate simple who is better messi or the complete george best then put messi on a mud swamp potatoe field with a heavy ball from 1965 to 1972 with no protection from referees and the hardest players to ever play the game. Then put george best on a nice perfect park for 10 years against pansys lol best would run total riot that much that fifa would have to change the rules. And thats no joke mate! You dont know your football. Best could play on ice and not leave a mark as he would glide over it. He could do anything, messi is great but not complete. Best was complete with no flaw wich clearly makes him the greatest. Pele didnt even come close. Maradona is the closest to best!

Horrendous pitch. Best showed some sparkling plays at times, but once England double marked him, he kind of struggled... The game as come a long way since this match, *_52 years ago_* . Today's ball carrying dribblers, have to carry the ball under constant duress , from up to, two to four opposition players, all pressing together... Watching how Messi get's out of all of that, is mind blowing, as there's less time & space on the ball than in Best era... Just look at the recent Champions League Final & how Chelsea set up, squeezed all the spaces, Man City's artistic players like to play in, rendering them redundant.

His lack of European Cup dominantion like Di Stéfano, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Ronaldo 7, Messi & lack of World Cup entries to see how he'd have fared up against the likes of Pelé, Garrincha, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Maradona & the shortness of his career. Lionel Messi himself isn't exactly a great international footballer himself.Lionel Messi does hold up well in comparison to any footballer at club level. But is at best a good world class international footballer at the very best.In 5 international major tournament finals Lionel Messi has scored 0 goals, has no goal assist. And has a very poor 20% win rate against an 80% loss rate in those same finals matches. As an individual player who many claim is not just the best current era footballer. But who some claim is the greatest footballer who has ever played, that is a very poor showing indeed. And clearly shows Lionel Messi is not nearly as effective as an international player as he is a club player. Not even as if Lionel Messi plays for one of the worse national football team in South America, like Venezuela. No he actually plays national team football for Argentina who are one of the top three traditional powerhouse, national football team in South America. And in the list of international footballers who have scored 50 goals or more, Lionel Messi has the worse goals to match ratio at 0.5 of anyone in the top 20 on the list. And overall his competitive record at international level is nothing special at all either, he even went to 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals tournament and did not score any goals at all.Lionel Messi is perhaps the best ever player at club level, he certainly has the numbers and trophy haul to back that claim up against any other footballer in history at club level. But as an international footballer Lionel Messi is nowhere near as good as many other great players have been and his international level football numbers and trophy haul just doesn't compare with many great international level footballers. And Lionel Messi definitely has no claim at all to be the greatest ever international level player in history. And football is played at both club level and international level. So shouldn't the greatest ever footballer be a player who is actually great not just at club level but also must be a great player also at international level. And Lionel Messi isn't a great international player never has been and probably never will be.He has a good international record, even a world class record, but it's certainly nothing special either, definitely not a great international record.

George Best was dominating the opposition, the rest of that Northern Ireland team aside from Jennings was horrendous. Or do you not think that a player can perform admirably in a game that his team had lost?

He was far from the best. He only scored nine international goals from 37 appearances. Of those four were scored against Cyprus. Pele scored 77 goals from 92 appearances at a rate of 0.84. When he wasnt in a strong team he wasnt the best.

If you have seen that Northern Irish team, I'm not even sure how you can compare him to Pelé and his Brazil. Aside from Jennings & Blanchflower they were horrendous. His individual performances against England & Spain are pretty much as good as it can gets when you're playing basically on your own.
