I like the idea of using Pythagoras theorem three times to generalize the Pythagoras theorem, it's a kind of bootstrapping.

Smartphone Hacks, you can expand (BD-DE)^2 and add it to expansion of (DE+DC)^2. You will get the same answer as BD=DC. Instead of expanding speprately I used the formula (a-b)^2 + (a+b)^2= 2(a^2+b^2). Hope this explanation helped to understand better.

AB^2 + AC^2 = 2 AD^2 + 2 BD^2. As BD = BC/2) = 2 AD^2 + 2 (BC/2)^2 = 2 AD^2 + BC^2 /2. Hope this helps.
