For dropping the perpendicular from a point P on a line l, an alternate way is mark an arbitrary point Q on l. Then locate midpoint O of PQ by perp bisector construction. Now draw the circle with PQ as diameter, the intersection of the circle with the line l is the required foot of the perpendicular. Proof follows from Thales theorem (i.e. angle in a semicircle is right).
