Here is a quick demonstration of a Geometric brand die head. This die head will automatically release from the threads after the cut is complete allowing for faster retraction as well as not back cutting the threads on the way out. This particular die head is a 9/16” size model. It can cut a range of threads depending on what set of die chasers you have installed into the head. In this demonstration I am cutting 3/8-16 threads on a 3/8” piece of 12L14. The lathe is a Hardinge DV59 with a lever actuated tail stock that holds 5/8 shank tooling. The lathe was in low range set to approximately 350 rpm although it could cut faster. One neat feature of this particular model die head is the head can be floated into the exact center of the stock by loosening two mounting screws and then tightening them back down.
