Geology of Scotland course 2021 - session 1

Ғылым және технология

Scotland’s landscapes are the product of more than 3000 million years of evolution, and its current configuration is the result of the amalgamation of five terranes - very old fragments of lithospheric crust, each with its own individual geologic history and stratigraphic sequences - separated by faults. For most of its existence, Scotland was part of the long-lived and relatively static continent of Laurentia that comprised most of nowadays North America, Greenland and half of Ireland. Within this geographical setting, Scotland occupied a peripheral position, at the edge of the continent, but at the center of major intercontinental collisions.
This informal short course over 6 weeks provides a chronological overview of the formation and deposition of major rock groups from about 3000 million years to 50 million years ago, from Scotland’s oldest rocks to the young volcanic districts of the Hebrides. It will be presented online by Dr Alex G. Neches and guest contributors.
The first session will introduce the course and discuss some essential features of plate tectonics (introducing the supercontinent cycle, the formation of volcanic arcs, ophiolites and accretionary wedges) and structural geology (including the formation of recumbent folds and nappes, shear and brittle zones) specific of each terrane.

This is excellent, I am really excited by the prospect of following this course. I have just been reading "Walking the Bones of Britain" by Christopher Somerville which is an interesting book where the author walks from the Butt of Lewis down the length of Britain to the Thames Estuary discovering the story of the underlying geology as he goes. In the appendix at the end of the book he lists various useful resources and I found this as one of them. It is truly inspirational that there are such good people going so far out of their way to make their expertise freely available to others. I feel honoured to be able to share in it. Many thanks.

Great video, I’ve always had an interest in geology in fact all off the science. I live in Australia but my grandma was Scottish and I still have her 2 paintings of very wooly cattle grazing in the highlands crags and mist…lovely. I have collected many rocks from arid regions of Oz as I love the ‘centre’ and its ancient geological history. Scotland is an eye opener as your video demonstrates very well. Thank you, I’m 73, and most likely will never make it to Scotland but your vid was a well presented and riveting expose.

I can picture exactly what was described at 42:55 and what an amazing specimen that would be to have in a collection!! amazing. Wonder what other scenes would be revealed if it was continually sliced one after the other :)
