*TO DAVE & BOB:* Water is old. Some of the water that passes through us has probably spent time in the Mississippi, Colorado, and Yakima Rivers. I am a tough guy so I never cry, so as the song goes, "it must be raindrops falling from my eyes." Thanks from an East Coast townie.

Thanks for another adventure in learning, Dr Nick! Apropos of nothing in particular . . . for mental acuity and general energy, many people have found lipids to be superior to glucose (we can and do use both, but glucose is used preferentially when both are present). In fact, a lifetime of glucose fuel predominance can cause a hormonal dysfunction wherein various tissues do not respond normally to insulin signaling. See Bikman's "Why We Get Sick".

Speaking as an old, retired high school social studies teacher, my conclusion is that specialized language is the way EVERY profession limits the membership in its club. Also, rough water discharge figures: Mississippi 1,300,000 ft3/second; Colorado 500,000 ft3/second. Mississippi discharge not quite triple that of the Colorado. And a humble suggestion from a non-geologist to illustrate the interaction of uplift and cutting: The Black Canyon of the Gunnison River in western Colorado. It's now a national park.

Hi, Jaice Jones. You asked several questions, but I could only copy one, so here's one answer for "So does that mean that rivers can only cut into the earth if - essentially - the earth is pushing back?" A river cuts into the earth when the water velocity is fast enough to move the earth it is flowing over. The faster the water flows (i.e., the steeper the slope), the faster the cutting happens. Uplift does not have to be happening for cutting (erosion) to be happening. Remember the video Nick showed of the Mississippi River changing its course over a period of about 35 years, cutting into its own banks? That is erosion without uplift. I hope that helps.

If a lift is sudden or made of water like ice it can block a river and form a lake, and it will cascade over the lowest place as long as the river itself doesn't freeze. If the ridge lifts a foot a century and the river is 10 feet deep it is not a problem washing away that foot of uplift. There probably some limit on meandering and the ridge is undisturbed beyond those limits. The Midwest also has river flooding and soil deposits, and somehow these deposits fill in whole states like Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, probably has something to do with the ice sheets flooding and deposits given the edge of the sheet happens to have been there.

Imagine the Mississippi cutting down into the ground like the Colorado. It would arrive at the gulf of Mexico thousands of feet below sea level. Not going to happen. (Sort of the hot wire through butter analogy you presented.) I think of rivers on flat ground directing their eroding power laterally (into meanders) instead.

From an earlier Yakima River Canyon lecture I learned scientific definition of 'Meander'. WELL ACTUALLY PROF. "Z" NOW The Grand Canyon is part of the Colorado River basin which has developed over the past 70 million years, in part based on apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronometry showing that Grand Canyon reached a depth near to the modern depth by 20 Ma. A recent study examining caves near Grand Canyon places their origins beginning about 17 million years ago. Previous estimates had placed the age of the canyon at 5-6 million years. ***The study, which was published in the journal Science in 2008, used uranium-lead dating to analyze calcite deposits found on the walls of nine caves throughout the canyon!!! There is a substantial amount of controversy because this research suggests such a substantial departure from prior widely supported scientific consensus. In December 2012, a study published in the journal Science claimed new tests had suggested the Grand Canyon could be as old as 70 million years. However, this study has been criticized by those who support the "young canyon" age of around six million years as "[an] attempt to push the interpretation of their new data to their limits without consideration of the whole range of other geologic data sets." There are Meanders in Utah a part of the Colorado River near Moab and near the confluence with the Green River and Colorado River. There are exceptions to the rules or the Geologic Scientific Studies.

I am crying for you! Well done everybody... Laughing too...LOL The new cam is way better focus, depth and color concerns are gone. A very few overloaded mic moments but that's just you gettin' exited. The whiteboard cancelled any benefit gained by the camera. It generates a very pronounced exposure and chroma correction, very distracting. Lastly any plane you place in front of your voice always creates issues with the mic. The reflection amplifies the sound pressure level at the mic.

Why is the river straighter before and after the Yakima river canyon? Wouldn't there be more meanders in the other parts of the river?

I’m going to hypothesize two options: A: there’s a lot of farm land and humans tend to hate river meanders. Army corp of engineers might have straightened it back in the 30s. This was extensively done in Texas where I’m from originally. Consulting an early topo map may prove or disprove this idea. B: after uplift the slope of the land was no longer conducive to forming meanders, but the ones that were in rock were ‘locked’ in place.

@@CrooningRevival365 I watched an OPB episode that talked about putting the meanders back into the river I think somewhere in eastern Oregon maybe around Wallowas?
