The fascinating thing that I feel a lot of people don't really talk about enough is the nature of the interaction between cultural groups here. Just a couple of years ago I (a Zulu chap) was having a conversation with a Xhosa barman in front of an American tourist. I was speaking Zulu and the barman was responding in Xhosa and this is how the conversation went the whole night. Then out of the blue, the American chap asked me if I was speaking mostly slang or something, and the barman speaking proper Zulu (or the other way around). I then had to explain to him that we were both communicating in our mother tongues, and conversing in two languages at the same time. To which the American responds: "And YOU BOTH UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER????" It seemed so unique to him, but it is incredibly common in South Africa. We take multilingual to a whole new level here.

With my team at work we tend to end up mixing up Zulu, Xhosa, English and Afrikaans… often all in the same sentence! We live in Durban, most of the team are black African and coloured and Durban has a lower level of Afrikaans speakers (not one of us is Afrikaans first language but somehow it ends up in the mix)…

Also as they explained in the video English is language majority of South Africans can speak - our lingua franca. Unfortunately I only speak English and Afrikaans. In the company of different ethnic groups they would actually switch to English to accommodate me. I identify as coloured and most mixed would identify as coloured but a minority will have an issue with it. Coloureds, at the Cape in particular, speak a mixture of Afrikaans and English called "kombuis Afrikaans"

@@achmatp286 I lived in Cape Town for about ten years. That place really completed me shem. I stayed in Durbanville and Upper Oakdale for a while, which meant I had no choice but to bolster my Afrikaans. Then I spent a few years living in Kenilworth, Mowbray, and Rosebank, which is obviously as English as it gets, but that was never going to be an issue being from KZN and all. Then I lived with a local coloured girl for a few years, which forced me to brush up on my Kombuis Afrikaans. South Africa is just an experience nje...but my Sotho is embarrassingly poor. I haven't lived in the North for long enough periods to meet a nice Sotho girl. Best way to learn a language that.

Hi guys, I’m South African and here’s my perspective. I’ve seen this video a few times on KZread having watched various reaction videos and somehow I always come to the same conclusion…and pls do not get me wrong, this video is very well put together. It is great in that it tries to capture almost everything (which is near impossible) in one 30min segment. It’s obvious that a lot of work has certainly gone into the making of this short vid however, there’s a lot that’s missing and a lot that I feel is not coming through to the audience, especially those of you whom never visited this country before. For example the food…now before I get into it…I often ask myself the following question, what is or what makes a certain anything “South African”? And if you really dissect and unpack that question it can be really hard to answer because of the fact that South Africa is so culturally diverse with deep historical influence. Perhaps that in itself defines what it is to be South African? A mix masala (bag of mix spices). You see, what may be interpreted as being South African for one person, may very well be different for someone else” which brings me to the food…what is South African food? As in the video, some would say “pap and wors” ie maize and beef sausage. A favourite for many but I for one did not grow up eating pap and most people I know would much rather substitute the “pap” for mash potato. Then there’s the mopani worms, again it’s a delicacy for many but certainly something I’m not even remotely interested in trying out. If there’s one thing we can all agree upon as South Africans is that the one “food” that threads all cultural and ethnic groups together is a good old fashioned “braai” aka bbq. South Africans have claimed this as being part of our heritage as we have this belief that we have our very own unique spin on it. The concept of braai transcends beyond just the idea of having meat on a grill, its a social get together, a party, a vibe, a “jol” a true South African way. (Side note: I question this as I’ve been to Argentina and have seen first hand how deeply rooted the braai/bbq practice is in their culture…and believe me, the way Argentinians go about grilling meat over the fire is next level…it’s an art, an experience ) But my point is this, South African food is not just defined to the few mentioned in the video and I sometimes wonder if we truly do have a dish that is unique to this country as a whole? Having travelled extensively, I can confidently say that we are blessed to have the best of the best when it comes to all foods types, both local and international cuisine (a bold statement but I’m sure most will agree). We have some of the best steaks you’ll ever experience, a wide range of seafood, curries and “everything else” under the sun. You literally can enjoy almost every type of cuisine at world class standards and you wouldn’t even have to go looking to find it. French, Asian, Japanese, Indian, Italian etc etc. What is even more impressive is the quality and just how cheap it is to eat out. And to be clear, these establishments aren’t like hidden gems , you’ll find them everywhere in any of the big cities. The same applies to the quality and cheap pricing of our wines (when compared to the US, European and other countries…again some of the best wines in the world (finally something that’s unique and proudly South African), don’t take my word for it…you welcome to do your own research ;-) checkout Cape Winelands. I won’t get too much into it but the same argument can be made about music. Only a select few listens to the music genre “amapiano” and the same goes for any of the groups/artist mentioned in the video? And although these artist are all respected it’s not accurate to leave that impression that it’s the only genres South Africans listen to or that’s these artist are so overwhelmingly popular amongst all…this is so untrue, I for one couldn’t give a toss about Die Antwoord, as their lyrics are just vulgar and disgusting for my taste. I just want to end off going back to that video…I agree with pretty much most of the video but on some, not so much as it all depends through which lens you looking through ie your cultural background, are you looking at it from a white, black, colored or Indian persons perspective. Rich, middle class or poor? Privileged or non privileged. Marginalised in the past or not? Exposure to the many luxuries and comforts of South Africa or not. Exposure to having access to certain experiences and parts of the country etc etc with all this diversity and complexity, you bound to have very different views and perspectives on some of the things that were highlighted as being an “overarching South African thing” that being said, it’s a beautiful country, rich in diversity and one heck of a melting pot of cultures. Love that!

Although Trevor Noah looks liked a typical coloured person he does not identify as one. I stand corrected but I think he mentions this in his book. As coloured people we are so diversely and uniquely mixed and have our own culture. Some notable coloured people are Wayde Van Niekerk (Olympic track and field athlethe), Cheslin Kolbe and Bryan Habana (Rugby players) , Lesley-Ann Brandt (Actress), Amy kleinhans and Tamryn Green (Former Miss SA). Herschel Gibbs (Cricket player), Jonathan Butler (Musician), Adam Small (writer), Rapper AKA and many others.

Most mixed people in South Africa, that’s mix between black and white identify as Black. Coloured is a Culture not just a skin colour. So I agree with you.

I'm an Aussie and I visited South Africa in 2012. My sister and I bungee jumped off the Bloukrans Bridge and went to the top of Table Mountain.

We don't really call football "soccer", we just use the two interchangeably because "academically we're taught in british/uk english so that's the default english, but we take a lot of pop-culture influence from America (blame it on TV and radio). This means an average South African can speak and write in both UK & US EN. Weird but true, we socialise and socialize.

Agreed, it varies a slight bit from province to province, I’m from KZN and everybody calls it Soccer, I met some people in Gauteng that says football, but it’s a small bunch 😂

Braai is grilling, but more of our way of life. It's a social culture of enjoying the outdoors, cold beer and great company. You grill different meats, have them with pap (grits) and chakalaka (hot relish); with a coolerbox full of adult beverages. A true staple of group gatherings here. 🇿🇦🇿🇦

Great video. I would like to suggest you guys react to rugby greatest hits. Its not just South Africa but it's one of our favorite sports.

Loadshedding happens for two hours, not 6am to 2pm. Lady does not live in South Africa. Heritage Day! People of European descent choose to braai rather than participate. The rest of us Africans wear our traditional wear and resent the braai thing. For many it has just become another holidyay.

Most American reactors react to amapiano music, a type of House music. We actually have Mansa Mayne in South Africa right now and we absolutely love him.

Did they mention the Zulus defeating the British army? Didn’t see it. The Coloured group was created by the apartheid government. Apart from the descendants of Malays, the rest were originally KhoeSan people who were forbidden from speaking their indigenous language and forced to work on wine farms and paid with wine for wages. This was stopped by the post apartheid government. Alcoholism remains a huge problem in the community. The rest, outside of the Western Cape, were mixed race (African and Europe) children removed from their African families by the Europeans, eventually bein resettled in special townships for Coloured people only. They are our cousins and many of them speak our indigenous languages and do not make such a big deal about not being African. We intermarry and many live alongside us in the rural areas. This video script was probably written by persons of European descent, so some of the issues are not correctly reflected. Also, for a country that is 80%, there are so few actual Africans directly featured.

As a couple of people noted, their explanation of Coloured people's heritage is severely oversimplified and overlooks the most important aspects of our history: slavery and the subjugation of our Khoekhoe ancestors. Most of our African ancestors were indigenous Khoekhoe and enslaved people from Madagascar and places like Mozambique in East Africa. Our enslaved Asian ancestors were as mainly from India and Indonesia. Slaves and freed slaves were also the first to form Muslim communities in South Africa that grew under the influencenof exiled Indonesian royals/rebels. So when South Africans say "Malay", they're refering specifically to Coloured Muslims, not "Asians" as they put it in the video. The Dutch, German & French settlers who ended up adopted the name "Afrikaner" ran a slave economy at the Cape and forced indigenous people into servitude. The name "Afrikaner" meaning "African" was actually used to refer to "indigenous Africans" and later "locally born/mixed slaves" in the early colony. One study and "children of the earth" comment really is not enough of a history, even in short.

Braai is an excuse for good company, good food primarily meat, but with other home cooking and sauces (Usually pap, Chakalakka and various Salads) mixed in to supplement the main meal usually steak, chops or boerewors and at least 1 cooler box of alcohol

Nope I'd like to correct that and say we've found our way, it's Football. And also if you ask a South African a question that needs confirmation and the answer is "I'm sure" we're not it's just 50/50

Some of this has already been said in a comment but allow me as someone who identifies as a coloured South African to add my take. Much said in the video is correct but the diversity is not explained. There is no South African food or music that ALL South Africans identify with. Ethnic background, cultural and social status plays a big role. Pap and mopani worms are generally not eaten by all South Africans. Coloured teens mostly listen to hip hop and amapiano and other genre do not feature as prominently. The video also does not mention that we are diverse in terms of religion as well. I am a muslim and muslims play in prominent role in South African society. Our first Minister of Justice (I think Americans say Secretary) in the Mandela government, Dullah Omar was a muslim Past Minister of Education, Prof Kader Asmal was a muslim. Naledi Pandor also an Education Minister is a muslim. There are many muslims in other spheres of government as well. Hindu' too play a huge role in our society. I understand that all of this cannot be said in one video and it unfortunately sends a wrong picture to the world. Being South African means different things, depending who you ask. The rap group Die Antwoord is trash and they have unfortunately appropriateld a culture which they never grew up with in order to sell their music Also saying that coloured means mixed race is at best misleading Coloured people have generations of mixed ancestry from all parts of the world. I did an ancestral DNA test and it shows highly mixed. A small snapshot of my DNA 37% West European 13% South Asian 5% Ashkenazi jew 9% Bantu 5% Hunter gatherer (khoi/san) The rest is made up of different parts of the world

I am of Puerto Rican Descent moved to Virginia in 1969 and 72 my H.S Coach asked for people to play football, I thought it was Soccer that I played in Puerto Rico. Culture shock . Plus we went to Private school until we moved to Virginia where we went to Public School.

A beautiful video about South Africa. One thing I want to add. A braai is a very serious thing to us South Africans. It is in our culture. Both black and whites. I am Xhosa. Traditionally we don't do anything with our A cow, sheep or goat being slaughtered. We don't call it a braai. It's a traditional ceremony. We mostly braai our meat on wood. All South african groups share that. We just say it's a braai so other races can understand but it's not. It's a traditional ceremony which includes South african Traditional beer. Those 2 ingredients make a traditional ceremony.

Those caterpillars are very tasty, crunchy too. They are usually fried. I mean, they look weird but think of all the other weird stuff we eat... I never ate prawns because of how they look, but I finally tried some and yum. So, the caterpillars may look weird but you gotta taste them... That was excellent. But the one thing I have to mention, as this isn’t really well known to the outside world, but the segregation laws wasn’t introduced by the Afrikaaners. It’s that Hendrik Verwoerd ( president in 1961), gave it a title by calling it Apartheid. It was actually the British and Cecil John Rhodes that introduced the laws to keep the different tribes apart from one another as a solution to all the scuffles the tribes had between themselves…By 1910 when South Africa became a republic, those laws was already well in place. Just clearing that up. The British are master deflectors That was a good presentation otherwise.

South Africans love their sport in particular rugby, cricket and soccer. The Springbok team is the pride of the nation. The term "Rainbow Nation" was coined by the late Archbishop Tutu (of the TRC n anti Apartheid activist) to signify a united South Africa. Loadshedding lasts a bit more than 2 hours not however long they mentioned in the video.South Africans universally hate Loadshedding. Another thing that unites us is that the vast majority of us hold late President Mandela in high esteem irrespective of race, religion, ethnic background etc.

We lived with the koisans in harmony but we were towards the east and the nomadic tribe of khoi and San people never lived in one place they moved around and inhabited the west and northern parts of south Africa. When white ppl came they made contact with them first. Hence they created the myth that we migrated from west Africa. 🙄 so they can deny us ownership of our land by creating the migration myth.

No. Coloureds aren't made by black and white. When the Dutch arrived they found what we call the khoisan people. Enslaved them and whites slept with them. They got that part wrong. Today coloured people are mixed yes but the main strand comes from the khoisan
