Thanks everyone for your patience during the brief hiatus. Arabic-Italian-ish speaking people with ancient temples that like to eat dumplings filled with ricotta with mashed peas, This was a really fun country to research and thanks to all the Maltese geograpeeps that helped out and stay tuned for FLAG/ FAN FRIDAY in my NEW house!

I'm Maltese and as soon as I saw this video's title, I was like "Oh lord, this guy doesn't know what he got himself into". The reason for this is that a couple of years ago there was a popular-ish KZread channel that made a video about our accent and got it completely wrong and the comment section was bombarded with angry and offensive comments and thousands of Maltese people on Facebook were sharing the video and writing how disgusted they were with it. My first thought was that this video would be a repetition of that but I was wrong I'm surprised at how much research went into this detailed and very surprisingly accurate depiction of this small, secret island of ours. You even got some of our more obscure features and information right. Well done and thank you for doing my country justice with your work :)

If you've never been here, you will be surprised at how much there is to see and enjoy on this tiny island. I sometimes feel like it is too small and limited, but that's only because I've been here almost 27 years. It has something for everyone. It has a lot of clubs for the younger generation, a lot of restaurants and a lot of places to chill for people who have retired. There are plenty of nice views, especially whenever the sea is involved. The sea and our beaches are beautiful. As you can clearly see from the video, there's a lot of culture, as well. The wages aren't good, but then again, the cost of living isn't high, except for rent. My French and Italian friends say it is much easier to find a job here, so that's a plus.

We also used to have a quite large maltese community in my hometown in Libya.

They have fantastic and cheap public transport, so I’ve no idea why car ownership is so high. I LOVE Maltese buses.

To share, Malta has more a shared cultural link in common with the island of Sicily itself than with Italy as both were under Islamic Rule (Emirate of Sicily, or Siquilya) during the 9-10th century until the Normans conquered in 12th century) and then the Kingdom of Sicily afterwards, resulting in shared lexicology from Siculo-Arabic which is a direct descendant of Maltese - l-lingwa Maltija (it became extinct in Sicily but survived in Malta as its current form) - Both Sicilian and Maltese have words and place names derived from Siculo-Arabic (babbaluciu/bebbuxu, zagara/zahra, tanura/kenur, zibbibu/ zebbib...etc...) - very cool! And to note, much of Maltese's more Italian-like words come via route of the Sicilian language (which developed separately from Italian [itself derived from a dialect of Tuscan which came much later than Sicilian]), and was the language of the Kingdom of Sicily). For example, saying Thank You - Grazzi/Grazzi in both Sicilian and Maltese compared to Grazie in Italian...or...Nannu/Nannu for grandfather vs. Nonno in Italian. SICILY/MALTA - Mediterranean cousins to the South from across the sea 🇲🇹🇮🇲

Ronan Vialon Yes, Maltese is a descendant of Siculo-Arabic which in turn is from the Maghrebi Arabic branch so it's no surprise that Tunisian and Maltese are pretty understandable in mutual intelligibility. I knew a Tunisian gal who loved this aspect of both Sicily and Malta and could understand a good part of Maltese.

Fun fact: the name of the capital, Valletta came directly from the name of the french grand master of the order of saint John of malta ( Jean de La Valette) who was the grand master at the time of the Great Siege by the turks. It was a crushing victory for the order against overwhelming odds. The decisive actions and wise choices of the grand master had an important part in this victory. For french the name of the capital is "La Valette".

To be fair, everyone had his moment of glory. The turks were formidable conquerors during many years. But during the great siege they were outmatched by the knights ( 1 knights was cleary worth 10 or more normal ottomans soldiers). We must also not forget the bravery of the maltese people who were of a great help during the fight (notably during the fight in the port were they fought ottomans with knife in the sea to defend the chains garding the entrance to the port). In the end, ottomans chose the retreat in fear of the reinforcements coming from spain when the knights were at the breaking point (only between 300 and 350 knights left on the 600 who took part in the battle). To the opposite, between 10000 and 20000 turks died. Thanks to that the order gained eternel glory and survive until today. Fortunatly nowodays they came back to their first occupation: being a humanitarian association. Aleikum assalam from perhaps a future member of this order.

Maltese language reminds me a lot of Tunisian dialect ( which is a mixture of many languages : Arabic , French , Italian , Spanish and most of all tamazight the language of natives north African) it's funny how Arabs think that Maltese and amazigh/ Berbers ( natives of north of Africa) are Arabs because they use Arabic words lool , greetings from Tunisia !

Such an amazing video and I’m glad Australia got a mention towards the end. My grandparents on my fathers side were born in Malta and moved to Australia in the 1930’s. 10 years ago I got my dual Maltese citizenship as I am 1/2 Maltese by blood. I’m going to visit my country for the first time in my life in 3 weeks and I’m so damn excited. It’s been a long time in the making as I’m 27 years old! All the stories my family have told me about Malta and I’ll finally be able to see and experience it for myself.

When I went to Malta I realised a few things: Everything is beige. It literally feels like the whole country is built on and with compressed sand. The food is amazing. It's kinda North African and kinda Italian, but definitely its' own thing. The language is a trip. Looking at Maltese text feels confusing, and listening to people speaking the language doesn't leave you less confused.

I love how I’m Maltese but understand this cause I’m shite at it but honestly we have some schools which are tal-Pepe as we call them which basically means those private schools that mainly speak English and are bad at Maltese We also have an international school called verdala but it’s f the most expensive in Malta We have great food like pastizzi ( pronounced pastitszi I guess) snails ( which are surprisingly good) fenek(rabbit) the Maltese sausage (which cod quite peppery) twisties Kinnie imqarun ( pronounced imugharoon I guess it’s like a mix of pasta meat and some eggs) timpana ( which is imqarun with pastry around it) ross il forn ( which is baked rice so it’s imqarun but rice instead of pasta) figoli ( which are traditional Easter pastries made with this almond filling and a cookie like outside) and many more We have horrible politics We celebrate feasts like every day We have dialects of sorts ( the gozitans have this weird way of saying stuff while some people from sliema ( slieema) or at least that’s where they mostly come from but honestly we all do it ,have the Pepe dialect meaning they switch from English to Maltese a lot We have a lot of history aka We were the most bombed country in WWII but we kept strong We don’t walk to school unless ur very close but we take the van the picks up from our homes Our football team sucks but we love the sport anyway ( literally in my maths class all they talked about was football and it was one of the answers in the exam) We have to get married in a church if we are Christian We have to learn Maltese from a young age and we have to get it to go to sixth form Oh another thing our school system and health care One the school system is different we have school till 16 6th form till 18 and university which is free btw and we get a monthly payment to go but if we don’t it’s lowered Two our health care is free cause we pay taxes Our government sucks like they killed a woman cause she spoke up about it No didn’t kill assassinated like blew up her car and it was like the town next to two schools We never win anything Most of our schools have uniforms One smart and one P.E. (Tracksuit) We always have to have two side on everything Our government doesn’t care about us or covid And they give their friends balla (a lot of) money and balla villas and yachts for no reason So basically we’re weirded but we’re proud :)

What is ironic is that the day you released the video was the national holiday of Santa Marija where we islanders celebrate the defeat of the Turks during the Great Siege and the arrival of the USS Ohio arrived in the Grand harbour during the Second World War after suffering heavy battle damage and helped the island defend itself from constant air raids by the Luftwaffe by bringing in tonnes of supplies that replenished the island. We also remember the lives lost on the perilous convoys to save Malta from destruction. In the evening, many villages would light fireworks to celebrate the national holiday.

Malta in a summary (by a maltese citizen): - twistees are good, not the best snack tho, i prefer doritos lmao - grandayyy is our god - a great number of adults/elders are fluent in italian, however english and maltese are the languages spoken universally - we get excited over the simplest things, such as being recognized on a popular yt channel ;)) - important quotes: ‘dejaqtli zobbi’ ‘int bil liba?!’ ‘Mur hudu f’sormok :)’ (don’t translate those xoxo) - EVERYONE KNOWS EACHOTHER IN MALTA - a popular snack: pastizzi. Its popular for a reason (find a pic of it you’ll see why) - Our version of 'chavs' are called 'perfs' - Every sentence must contain a swear word (it's a bad habit, dont attack us) - without tourism we'll starve, so visit us lol - i still need to find out who grandayy is irl 🤔

Given the fact how close Malta is to Tunisia, it feels sad how there isn't much going on between the two, i never remember hearing about Tunisians travelling to Malta and vice versa, especially with the history both countries share, relations should've been better but Italy's influence is obviously huge on that island. one Maltese guy once told me he was surprised to know that he spoke Tunisian words and that i could understand him easily, they were never taught in schools that Malta was part of Tunisia for centuries thus the confusion.

Fun fact in 1956 Malta had a referendum to integrate into part of the United Kingdom. This would have given them three seats in the House of Commons and would have meant most things would have been controlled by the said House of Commons while the Maltese parliament would control more social and public issues such as education and the catholic church. The referendum was approved to join 77% voted For, of a turnout of 59%. Sadly the integration never took place due to reasons financial reasons that ingratiating could have caused and Malta became independent eight years later.
