I see Estonia as Nordic. I live in Norway, I've visited Estonia, and it is just gorgeous. The people are western like us, they have strong ties with Finland and more. The only thing missing is the Nordic cross on their flag.

Thank you! I think so too! Historically Northern Estonia and islands (especially Saaremaa, also called Ösel, and Hiiumaa, Also called Dagö) have stronger cultural and genetic connections with our Nordic neighbors than Southern Estonia. People living in South Estonia are more likely to see themselves as Baltic and on the other hand Northern Estonians see themselves as Nordic. We have Finnic language but Nordic culture.

Well, there were those semi-large sized catamaran type ships that would cross the baltic sea to finland in less than an hour in the late 90's early 2000's, which could carry a dozen small cars, but they weren't in action for long. The traditional RoRo ferries indeed take longer than 45 minutes though.

Interesting fact: as Estonia is also part of NATO, other NATO planes do occasionally training here. In the summer Spanish fighter jet "lost" a misile during excercise in Southern Estonia. Missile was never found and it is a miracle that no one got hit as there are other fighter jets in the sky not to mention several passenger airplanes.

Many scholars believe that some of the Nordic/Scandinavian origin myths have to do with the meteorites that hit Saaremaa island in Estonian because they include the sun falling, darkness, and a great fire. Kaali crater lake is still considered a sacred site (hiis) to the Estonians. I think the Nordic countries accept the fact that Estonia has a Nordic past (it was once part of Sweden and Denmark) but also note was heavily influenced by other countries outside of them. If anything, Estonia and Finland should have their own social/cultural/ethnic region together, as they're more alike than say Norway is to Finland, etc. The other Baltic states are mostly ethnically Baltic and speak a Baltic language, whereas Estonia is not ethnically Baltic or speak a Baltic language. They're a Finnic people. I highly recommend reading up on Saaremaa though. Saaremaa is just absolutely gorgeous and has a pretty amazing history. It's on my bucket list - I want to spend a couple of weeks just living on the island (I'm going to making more than one trip to Estonia, that's for sure lol).

By today, Estonian natives have more hereditary ties to the Nordic contries than the baltic, even our physical appearance is leaning more to nordic than slavic and our language base is nordic. We were lumped into the baltic because of our land-based connection and situation, but our DNA and culture, all though having influences from the baltic/slavic cultures, is still closer to our nordic neighbours.

One of the key events that helped to get our independence was the Baltic Chain where lithuanians, latvians and estonians came together and formed a human hand holding chain across the three countries to show we want freedom. My dad stood in the chain with others, he said it was an extraordinary experience and they sang the most beautiful and freeing songs.

Hey Brian. I was still a kid, about 7 years old, at the time, but i was out there when we (the baltic countries) formed the "baltic chain" or "the baltic way" when hundreds of thousands of people joined hands and stood in a human chain spanning the baltic countries as a political protest to gain our freedom. Shortly after that we gained our independence. I remember little of it, except driving on a bus with my sister and mom, passing people who stood by the road hand in hand, miles and miles. We linked up near the capital city, a few miles out. It was pretty awe inspiring for a child, even though i didn't really understand what was going on or why.

When people hear Nordic they will rather think of countries like Sweden and Finland and others, but when (personally has happened to me) you say Baltic or Eastern, people associate it with Russia. Growing up, I never even considered that we could be anything other than Nordic. It was not something I actively thought about, it was just something I thought was a simple self-evident fact. I was surprised to learn later as an adult that some people don't view us that. Why I thought so might have something to do that we have several songs about being Nordic (none about being Baltic or something else). Our capital is literally Danish town in translation. We used to be part of Sweden and Denmark. Some of our islands and coastlines were originally inhabited by Swedes who left only in the run up to the WWII. Still at least those of us from the coasts or islands probably have some Swedes in our family histories. Our history before the northern crusade was pretty much shared. Our national epic is interlinked with the Finnish national epic. The historical pre-Christian national gods are almost the same (which is not true if you go to Latvia or Russia). Today we carry mostly Lutheran tradition. If you look at the bookshelf of any home there are probably as many Finnish and Swedish author's children's books as there are Estonian authors. There a number of other cultural icons that are shared between Finland and Estonia - Sofi Oksanen, Aino Kallas and Hella Wuolijoki are some examples, but hardly the only ones. Our economy is intertwined with Finland and Sweden. It also used to be that pretty much everyone in northern Estonia spoke also Finnish, but this unfortunately is no longer the case. Of course there is also a question what exactly do we mean by the term Nordic. The literal translation of our word for it - põhjamaa - is northern land. You may want to say it only means Northern European - but that doesn't really convey the same meaning as põhjamaa as it includes for example UK, but also Latvia and Lithuania which we haven't usually thought of as põhjamaa (and to my knowledge neither have they thought it like that). The specific word Nordic and the group of countries identified by that word is a much more recent invention than our põhjamaa word. So when I say we are part of the põhjamaa, I mean that we are part of the group of countries that happen to include us and what in English is termed Nordic countries, but the term I am using in Estonian predates the English term. It would be very inconvenient for us to suddenly start not calling ourselves põhjamaa as that would mean we have to scrap a bunch of very old and dear songs about ourselves.

But those few points kind a doesn't matter. Because You were part of Sweden because they conquered your land. They even conquered Latvia too for some time, even Danish did that. And that's why there were some Swedes or other Nordic people at Estonia. And your economy intertwines with Swedes or Finns because those are one of closest country to You and one of the riches ones. Btw i'm not saying that You are not Nordic. You are. But You are Baltic too, kind a, but mostly because of place on map and shared history, mostly bad one, and maybe becase of few other small things. So in some ways You are both ;d

Estonian government raised alcohol taxes a lot(especially strong alcohol like vodka, rum etc.). So now we (Estonians) and Finnish go to the Latvian border to buy some cheap alcohol from there. Shops are by the border of Latvia, and on Latvian land. Latvia has a lot lower taxes, for example 0.5L Mernaya costs at Latvia 6.5€, in Estonia 10€. Geography now video is just little bit expired.

⚠ It is not how people feel that defines the status of a country, it is the culture and history that defines if it is a Nordic country and if you look at the facts then the north part (with Saremaa and Hiiumaa) is as nordic as anithing can be. We had Vikings (the oldest finds in the world too) our most known belifes named "Taara" belife is based on Thor, our region mostly Reval the corrent Tallinn was one of the most importand Nordic trading hubs, most of our history it was occupied by close to all the Nordic countries and so on.

The video is a bit outdated now about the "free wifi in the forest" thing. It was an ambitious idea that didn't work out. Estonia now has free wifi in malls and cafes and thats pretty much it. Helsinki has a city center wide free wifi that actually works pretty well, and its better than anything we have.

Estonian here on the NORDIC topic - northern european and nordic are 2 different things. We don't have a problem being called "baltic". I think the nordic thing is kinda like the mentality of wanting to sit at the "cool kids" table (even though Latvia and Lithuania are cool kids too! ❤). It is also fueled by the fact that we ARE "northern european" country as classified by the UN and our relation to finns. What we don't like is being called "eastern european" country due to being occupied by the USSR.

Nice to see your reaction :D Nice to see our country being showed to other people! :) Today most of estonians have close relatives who took presents in that Song Festival that won our indepentence, so most of us can relate to that and we are proud of i! :) Second we are nordic cause of our language as we are one of the last communities who speak it as nationality :( It is has a long history but we need it :) We don't want to be assumed russians :) We have the life values of nortic countries and trying to have them, but as we have been independent so little time it takes some more time :) Also we have viking heritage so there is that also :D

well you see when estonia or we were part of the ssu (sovient) there were banned our flag language in public and christmas yes we were allowed to celebrate their version of christmas (näärid) and banned were also our national songs multible and when we like “sung ourselves free” we gathered together and sang our national songs against the law but that is not to say we had some wars of course and we celebrate the singing in a like festival that happens every 5 years but the childrens thing happens often and the religious thing is we were killed and there was a war to make us christian and so it sometimes has a bad taste before we believed in nature sources loodan et palju vigu ei teinud i hope i didn’t make many mistakes
