Genuine Issue vs Rothco M65 Feild Jacket

Tell me what you think about the two. Which is better?

Pausing at 410 mark…. The reason why the M65 did not have its layers attached at the bottom was to make it easier and quicker to dry when wet …. It also allowed for soldiers in a survival situation to stuff the space between with natural and artificial insulating material, sealing it off with either tape or needle and thread

I got my hand of authentic BDU material and made a “mountain cloak” based on a 17th century casaque that fits over my issue M65. Its a open circle with a collar hole in the middle and a cut from the collar to the hem. Its is divided into five panels, one large one in the back two smaller ones that fit vest like in the front and two even narrow ones that overlap the sleeves. The vest panels can close overtop of the jacket or be inter grated with the buttons of the jacket. You zip up the jacket button the right side vest onto the right side buttons of the jacket , button the left side zipper flap into the first row of buttons of the right side vest, then the left side vest closes over a second row of buttons on the right side vest. The cloak alone can be secured using buttons toggles and or a collar cord depending on how tight or loose you want the cloak. It also has belt loop straps on the inside of the shoulders to allow it to connect to the jacket through its shoulder board straps. The sleeve sections narrow to a point so that they can be folded back and a shoelace threaded through grommets turn the panel into an over sleeve to the jacket. Those same grommets match with grommets on the front and back panels to make a enclosed unit. The cloak can also tie into either the web gear or the straps of general issue ruck sack but in the later case is mostly as a way of storing it and providing added protection in the rain to your bag. The cloaks can also be combined into a conical shelter, particularly when draped over the lower boughs of an evergreen

I love these jackets. Mine is a pristine OG-107 version that was made in 1967! I’m mentally trapped in the 60s so I love the aluminum zippers and the Olive Drab color they used in Vietnam. Plus, it was made in America, like a lot of the excellent equipment they used back then. Sure as Hell feels more authentic and durable than that communist made crap!

Rothco's are made to military specifications because they are not made in the US anymore, because the military doesn't issue them any longer. New Rothco jackets come with a liner, Most used ones don't have the liner. The M-65 I was issued had the same heavy duty brass zipper.

40 us dollars is a very good price for a genuine issued jacket, for the same price here you would maybe get one of those chinese made ones from afghanistan,an ex croatian army 1990s, or just one of the many generic civillian copies, i like the fact that a lot of american army uniforms are made by sportswear companies,or similar

Regards the Rothco Hood I have a budget M65 jacket with a similar hood arrangement and like you have found if you fasten the hood with the buttons facing out it leaves the collar to rain, however I found you can fasten the hood because of that stretchy fabric so that the buttons are facing in so it protects the zip opening. Another thing I have found is at both ends of the collar there are button holes but no corresponding buttons on the hood that would fasten to them. Also with my jacket them lining is not sown to the hem like the Rothco Jacket.

Good luck finding even a XXL in genuine surplus field jackets. But I agree. Quality of usgi always made better. And you paid only 10 bucks for Rothco? Great bargain. I don't own one but for 10 buck? Weird, very weird. I expected more from Rothco. You make it sound like even 10 dollars wasn't worth it. Well, I just got their softshell version of this jacket and it's got a lot of clip buttons and that's cool, seems solid and the zippers are not metal which is also nice. The fleece lining isn't a whole lot so it's good for layering, but I haven't worn it yet. I live on the other side of the globe so it's rare to see Rothco stuff here, but some hunter was looking to get rid of this for cheap and I decided that I cannot be a military gear enthusiast without owning a M65 type jacket. We will see how it holds up....

From Corinth Manufacturing Company USA, it's made after military Specification and seems pretty well made, but i have not worn it yet

Interesting, mine seams to be a mix of both jackets... The inner bottom is not attach to the outer shell and the neck flap on the hood is like the genuine, but there is no fraying inside the hood compartment. Brass zippers, but with shock cords at the bottom and the other adjustment cord is like the genuine jacket. The neck hooks and loops are like the genuine, but the buttons holding the insulated liner could have been better sewn, like you mentionned on the Rothco. Pressure snaps are Alpha Industried Mine have a tag with : PARKLANDS CANADA CA# 51132 FABRIQUE EN CHINE (Made in China...) I'll wear this jacket for heavy work as a commercial roofer/sheet metal worker this winter and i'll try to update my post to let you know if it hold up well.... I don't want to pay HH or Arc'teryx prices for an upper and lower shell I'm risking to ruin in a 100h of labor. This jacket will go trough highly abrasive surfaces, lots of sharp materials and tools, heavy winds, from wet cold to -35°C dry cold etc. If it last 2 years, I'll be more than happy for the price!!

I never took the hood out of the collar of my Rothco jacket until I saw this video, and it's the same with the stupid stretchy material, but mine doesn't even have buttons. It has button holes, but no buttons. I have a bunch of those same buttons from another project of mine, so I can add them, but I am not sure which side of the hood I want to sew them onto. On one hand, I want them on the inside of that little bit of material (lets call it a flap) so that the rain can stay on the outside and not drip down the inside of my lining, but they'd have to be buttoned after the hood is deployed, which for me means taking the jacket off to do. The way your Rothco jacket has it is on the outside of the flap, which would lead to possible rain and dampness on the inside, but I could keep them buttoned and deploy the hood whilst I am wearing the jacket, on the fly. Is there a reason I am not seeing that Rothco sewed them on yours this way, like perhaps the easy deployment, or are they just ignorant and sewed them on all willy-nilly with no real thought into the process? I'm leaning to the previous method even though it means a more difficult deployment of the hood. Damnit, I wish they'd have just done the hood correctly like the original. Haha!

tiborvarnju the extra outside button is meant to attach a seperaat more waterproof hood on the jacket, since the build in is not warm and waterproof (only for consealment)

Zulfi Suhendra I got it at a local army navy store. you have to bring cash and be ready to negotiate prices and dont give in if the price is higher then you want. it takes practice. Good luck I hope that helped!

I liked having the history of the jacket that's why I kept the name tag. However some people might be uncomfortable wearing it with a name tag, in that case it's your jacket so do what feels best.
