    I watched the video by Ashton, and it was clear that he was calling out the practice of a perfume house using the platform of a fragrance influencer to push a fragrance under the name of that influencer, when that influencer did not have a part in creating the fragrance. Essentially, Ashton is calling out the deceptive nature of this practice. When an influencer who has an in-depth knowledge of fragrances and notes, spends the better part of a year reviewing and testing hundreds of submissions before settling on the final formulation, I can see where the practice of slapping your name on a fragrance that you had not creatively directed, would be an issue. For the record, Ashton has creatively directed 7 fragrances for the now defunct Galleria Parfums, 5 fragrances for M.M. of London, and 1 fragrance for the exclusive line at Precious Liquids. His fragrance, Terra Nova, was a finalist for the Prestigious Men’s Fragrance of the year. An accomplishment that has not been seen by any other fragrance influencer. I applaud Ashton for what he has achieved and the work that he puts into his channel. Never afraid to tackle the issues in the fragrance community, Ashton is a breath of fresh air in the fragrance community. Thanks for sharing this, Dan! Hope all is well with you.

    Sounds like Jeremy fragrance type of attitude to the game I've heard his fragrances are very designer type and nothing really creative. Not tried them myself so can't say if true or not. I refuse to pay such price for a youtube frag I probably would for Ashton or sir smells because they actually have real knowledge of the industry and not just for the cash. Is zahroff any good?? I've always been on the fence about his as he works a lot with that tltg nut job so I'm not convinced until I read up and hear more 👍🏼 keep smiling ppls

    Exactly Dan, it's a common practice and designers and niche often pick scents from an existing catalogue of scents. Sometimes a little tweaking is done, the rest is marketing. Influencers are a tool in the marketing toolkit.

  • @justaddlight
    @justaddlight6 ай бұрын

    In many ways, the whole influencer thing is really just the next evolution of the celebrity fragrance, albeit with better presentation and an inflated price tag. Certainly there are great ones and there are poor ones; but for the brand owners themselves, it's a sneaky way to circumvent criticism. Busy hand needs fingers, but if a few of them fall off, you can always grow more. I think I mentioned sometime around 2016 that bespoke fragrances were just around the corner, and this could be the first major step. No use having a perfectly decent formula sitting on the shelf when it could be making money and helping to improve the lives of some who would genuinely find it a perfect fit. Fostering connections is the theme of this decade. ⛓

    Ash was very transparent in the video he recently made that everyone is referencing. He had also been clear about his role with other fragrances before. Ash puts out great content, very personable, and is great for the fragrance community. I think everyone agrees that for others who might be deceptive in their approach in “marketing” a product with little to no transparency and “rating” a fragrance falsely due to a money-influence exchange, are the problems. But if someone is transparent while still marketing something, I have no issue with that. If you are still angry with that, then it just makes you jealous (or as those youngins would say, you’re a hater). Let’s not pretend that money doesn’t matter. People do this all the time, it’s called endorsements! But…I think we all agree, just be honest and transparent about the business. I always welcome an open opinion. Ash is great, glad that many in the comments have said similar sentiments.

    I was just having a convo about the darker side of this world of fragrance and the deceptive things that go on. How much do we expose to be helpful to our subs and keep them informed- at the expense hurting someone’s returns. And at the risk of making enemies with people in the industry. It’s a fine line. I’m new at this and just started my channel and have already been made aware of things - backstabbing and greed that some might just label “business as usual”. Hard for me because I’m committed to honesty with my subs.

    Hey Dan, I did watch the Gents scent video you are discussing. I personally don’t have an issue with this practice. A person with any type of larger influence is always used to push products outside of fragrances. Why is it such a crime for fragrance reviewers to put their name to a fragrance for marketing? Fully appreciate your brand is separate entity and you deserve credit for that. Ash creatively directed which is a step below your position. Some influencers just put their face to a fragrance with little effort. None of these scenario’s are an issue for me. That Azzaro pour Homme Leau is a beauty. Good video Dan. Best of luck with Norton & Wilson. Next time you have a sale on individual bottles I will treat myself.

    He did a video awhile back on his experience creating Galleria perfumes. It was awesome, and he explained how bad that venture was. If people remember he spent a long time creating the line, pushed it initially and then stopped talking about it. Later (likely after contract experation) he spilled the beans. Ashton knows his stuff, and has integrity, like this Smelly guy. That is why I follow these two...And George, he is passionate about his fragrances too. I have no problem with influences doing this, but I won't drop money on it...Still need to get a Naughton and Wilson offering, great price...just don't know the scent profile exactly.

    I remember being in southern France on the Riviera while backpacking thru Europe in the early 90's and there was a store on the promenade that let you pick your own scents that they would then mix to create your own fragrance blend (at the time I had almost zero interest in fragrances and I still know nothing about blending them and what works and what doesn't) ... was I REALLY a fragrance creator???

    I don't watch a lot Ash's videos because he tends to gravitate to modern, sweet fragrances that I typically don't like. I think he's knowledgable, entertaining and I happened to catch that vid. I thought it was very interesting. Who knew there were menu driven fragrance creation platforms that KZreadrs can check boxes to create "their brand". I think we all know that the fragrance content folks on KZread don't sit in labs creating fragrances, but I do believe that people like Dan and Ash put some thought (and effort) behind these creations with the help of a professional perfumer to make them come to life.

    I think the problem is these companies are just throwing anything together then going to an influencer and asking them to pick a pre-made probably not very good fragrance and abusing the trust and the viewers of that influencer with sub par run of the mill crap. If it’s done on a mass scale I could see it generally affecting the whole community and damaging it in the long run

    Personally, I don't own a single influencer or even celebrity endorsed or branded fragrance. But if someone else likes an influencer or celebrity enough and they want to be associated with their brand I don't think it matters to them if the process of getting the fragrance to market took 5 minutes or 5 years.

    I'm starting to think, and I'm in the minority here, that AI and "paint by numbers to create a fragrance" is the way of the future. If the quality, performance and scent ends up fantastic, who cares who or what is behind the creation? Looks like things are headed that way. Also, I have Azzaro PH L'eau...and it's just a tad similar to Rive Gauche. Some might be disappointed if they chase after it. But for a cheapie, it's pretty decent.

    Interestingly, after watching your video I saw that Cubaknow posted a short video that he has an AI created fragrance coming out soon, at least for him to review "and to see if we need perfumers anymore." Considering that he considers himself a "scentertainer," doing this would fit in to his efforts to develop entertaining content.

    Will anybody really know how much work was put into it? An if it was really a new creation? Perfumer companies will offer 3-4 offerings that may closely match your requirements from their 5k-10k offerings in their libraries, usually something most Cost-effective for them. You will get more attention if you’re somebody but perfumers are in high demand and are usually very busy.

    Ash didn't seem to be criticizing the KZreadrs that actually invest in their fragrances or fragrance lines. People like you and Jeremy invested your own time, energy and money to create fragrance businesses, Ash worked as creative director in Galleria and his Michael Malul frags (which clearly state Michael Malul and Gents Scents on the bottle). Others like Aaron Terence Hughes built their brands first and then promoted them through their KZread channel. But there are only so many frags out there by fragrance content creators, and there are only a few brands associated with most of them. All three of the brands that come to mind actually have pretty good products, so if they're the guilty ones, at least the frags aren't crap. It is scammy to claim that a fragrance is part of your heart and soul and the only thing you did was say "the blue one" and then endlessly hawk it as your own on your channel, but if the end product is good and worth the price then to me it's just a variation of Cristiano Ronaldo putting his face to a fragrance brand.

    I watched his video. It hopefully did get across the reality to some viewers that their average favourite youtuber is NOT on the phone to a master perfumer. However, by naming no one he implicated everyone other than himself, so it also seemed a little disingenuous and merely a new strategy to push his own stuff.
