How did you get X to start so quickly? I'm trying to reduce boot times on my own T420 but the lowest I've been able to get is 9 seconds from GRUB to X

@@criptixo no, i don't have any special guide. I have just added x.org to boot runlevel, removed all slow parts of kernel and disabled / moved slow init scripts to default bootlevel.

Look at wakeups (using powertop) and reduce wakeups. Reducing display refresh rate to 40 fps can help too.

U don't gain a lot of performance you won't even notice it so it's useless just stick to arch

Have one question about Gentoo. What if i didn't update system a long time ago. More than one year. Can I update the system gradually through archived versions? For example, like Arch Linux, they have had a daily archive of binary programs since 2006. Does the gentu have a similar mechanism for gradually updating the entire system by day or month?

@@strongleongch my old thinkpad has i7 and my new thinkpad has Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U which is huge improvement. Btw i am using firefox-bin. Firefox is another compilation time consument :)

Do you guys compile the packages on the laptops themselves or on a separate desktop/workstation? Gentoo is cool but I can't imagine using it on a system with less than 8 cores.

Directly on laptop. I don't have separate desktop, but i have pretty fast laptop now (Ryzen 7 with 16 threads)

Deppends on usage. I have light desktop and binary version of browser, so it's cca 8h on my current laptom (Ryzen 5850U)

I don't know. I am not using hdaps (not needed for SSD) and battery threshold can be set using acpi_call.

I use Arch btw.

There is no pattern, just default placement of awesome WM. It tries just to add new window to most "unused" part of display. For first window it's just center and then edges.

Mac OS som inštaloval podľa nejakého starého návodu, ale dnes by som do toho už nešiel. BIOS obrázok podľa štandardného návodu pre Lenovo. Bootovacia obrazovka je fbsplash, ale to je starý projekt, ktorý sa už ani nedá skompilovať.

There is nothing special to optimize. Just don't include featured which you don't need to kernel and don't enable use flags which you don' need. I can't do this, because it deppends on computer usage.

ThinkPad owners can't go a year without leaving the poor thing alone and not putting linux on it.
