    This was a different subscriber review video because I wanted to go a bit deeper with only 3 homes. These 3 were interesting to me because I really wanted to try to understand the design style and function they were reaching for rather than just pointing out mistakes. Hope you like it! Also, apologies for the WALL of links in the description but I wanted to list everything I mentioned!

    Hey sugar sweet, could you do a video on cat friendly furniture fabrics? I love my kitties but I have to face the truth. . . . They're animals! Lol Somedays they are the only souls that make me laugh. (One day I came home and the boy catwas wearing a McDonald's bag like it was a jumper. Ps. Normaly, I don't leave garbage around. But he really likes McD bags and . . . . he's charming.) I have double stick tape and am working on their training, but even good well trained cats can catch a claw occasionally. So, what advise you got?

    I LOVE that you featured Ryan's house! He bought that house from me - I had white walls, modest quiet design, even more art than he has (some of it mine - he has one of mine, too), very simple ceiling light fixtures, no stripes on the walls, no black doors (I think you should have commented on them!). The kitchen cabinets were framed in honey-colored wood with white panels on the doors before they went tomato red. I actually painted over a dark purple bedroom when I bought the house in 2009 - five layers to turn it white! (I also painted over a dark brown room - yukk! - and a lot of ugly tan walls, not to mention the front of the house which I turned from a nasty greenish tan to lovely dark blue.) Oh, but I did have a 19-foot wood kayak hanging from the ceiling in the hall downstairs which Ryan lacks - no place else to put it! Lucky it fit there, the house is 23 feet deep. I NEVER EVER would have done what he has, but it just delights me every time he puts more photos on fbook, it makes me laugh. I agree on the rug under the kitchen table, I think that would be a good addition. I don't like the black doors. They were white before, of course. Maybe the outside of each door should be the color of the room inside? That would be fun! Of course that wouldn't offer a logical option for the front and back doors, but it would work for the two upstairs rooms and the bathroom. Then keep the inside of each door white, so it's sort of the negative of the room? (if you know what I mean). I have no idea how he photographed the living room to make it look so large! It's a very small house, the living room is maybe 12 x 14. I opened up the window between the living room and kitchen which helped a lot, and put in lots more windows, which also helped a lot. It's a lovely little house, I'm really glad Ryan is enjoying it!

    I've read the comments (It's Ryan). Wow, TY all. Really appreciate the suggestions, and the compliments. So, I've had some time to really reflect on Nick's advice. I've had an aversion to the "maximalist" label because in my mind it always meant clutter everywhere, and gallery walls with haphazard spacing and no flow. I try to keep an even spacing, never go above the door frames, etc. But the examples you shared... yes, that's the style I wish I could achieve. They aren't at all cluttered, at least in the way I understand/FEEL that term. So I'm embracing it. I'm a maximalist. :D I think I have the foundation/structure of those examples you shared but I can feel how I can introduce a few more things and really get it there. So excited to try some new things. Also, wow... I really love creative people like Nick who can tailor their feedback to another person's preferences. It's a reflection of someone, I think, with a lot of empathy and a kind soul. It's a skill I wish I was stronger in myself. Also, it might not be obvious, but I only bought this house in October and I watched HOURS of Nick, Paige Wassel, DIY with KB, Lone Fox, Julie Khuu, and Posh Pennies from about July through December of last year. There are SO many things I learned that I think really helped out my house. Especially how high to hang art, finishing touches (my kitchen backsplash is stick-on BTW, cheap, but I bought a nice finishing edge and it looks SO good!), etc. My fave lesson from Nick is taking the time to create a design you love while making it as timeless as you can with your preferences. He really gave me the confidence that I don't need to do white marble kitchen to be cool. I can do what I want, and make some compromises to introduce natural materials or whatever else, to make it work for years. So cheers!

    Regarding Shauna's kitchen: I'm a mom and when my son was little, I would actually mat and frame my favorites among his school artwork -- and then hang them next to the breakfast table in a gallery arrangement. Just clearing the clutter off that refrigerator would make a huge difference, and as you mentioned, purchasing a cabinet or storage unit with doors to hide all of the other clutter. Great video!

    If Shauna's willing to do the work, maybe she can work out a deal with the landlord to reface the cabinets or make other cosmetic changes. Maybe she can get the landlord to pay for the materials or knock down the rent until Shauna recoups her costs. (Caveat: Get it in writing!) I love Ryan’s style! Looking out the windows, you can see the colourful houses for which St. John’s, NL is known. The use of bold colour is so important in a part of the world with long, dark, stormy winters. So Ryan’s use of colour is both cheerful and culturally appropriate. I agree about putting a patterned rug under the dining table. Otherwise, I wouldn’t change a thing.

  • @joyhecht

    Though the three houses that you see out the window - orange, green, and lavender - are all newly painted that way. Until around 2012 the orange and green ones were abandoned. The orange one was renovated, what's now the green one was completely removed (it was all burnt inside) and that is a totally new structure. The colorful houses are actually part of fairly recent gentrification, it is not traditional.

    Hey Nick! Thanks for featuring my space! You pronounced "braai" perfectly :) Though if I were Afrikaans, the "r" would be rolled a bit more. When speaking English though, you nailed it. You're correct, I need to define the space before deciding anything else. We do have another living room with a Tv, etc, so we dont necessarily need another, but when we have guests, this is generally the space to hang out, as it's larger. I'll lean into the games room plan, and start going from there. We also have twin newborns, so its temporarily become a space to lay out play mats etc.

    You have to update us! One question I don't know if you can answer, but might as well try... I've watched a lot of house flipping videos from SA, oddly. Like 99% of houses have floor tiles the same size as yours. Those are, in my experience, rare in North America. Why are they that size so commonly in SA? Is it something to do with the climate or something?

  • @luke2956

    @luke2956

    Жыл бұрын

    @@SignalHillHiker Nah, dont think its anything to do with climate, it's just the current trend. The trend a few years ago was much smaller tiles (200mm x 200mm or 300mm x 300mm), but lately the modern trend are tiles in a much larger format, being 600mm x 600mm (like mine in the pics). I recently renovated the bathrooms and used this size, as well as some double sized (1200mm x 600mm) which look great. Just seems to be the modern size here, I didnt actually know it was unique?

  • @SignalHillHiker

    @SignalHillHiker

    @@luke2956 I don't know if it's unique - there could be people from 100 countries reply to us and say "Same here!" - but for me, personally, it's not common where I am (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) and I've only seen it on YT vids of SA houses. So that's my current assumption. More than willing to be corrected haha. :D Either way, awesome space. Make sure you update us when you've done what you're going to do! :D

    Hey Nick-Great series. For Shauna’s kitchen, I would first focus on just doing the contact paper on the upper cabinets. That would do so much to relieve the heaviness, and is a very achievable goal. That may be all that is needed. Besides, contrasting upper and lower cabinets are all the rage!Also, the door on your fridge is reversible. The kitchen would work so much better for you if you made the door open in the other direction . It is a relatively easy DIY task , and will change your life. Trust me on this.

    Excellent advice. Just doing all the upper cabinets would relieve the heaviness, & a lot of the busyness at eye level. I have another suggestion for the refrigerator...if the clutter is contained it would make a huge difference. That's what I did. A command center on the (unseen from the center of the room) side of the fridge could have shopping list, ink pens, etc in a magnetized organizer. You can pick up one at a dollar store & glue magnets on the back, or even buy one that's already magnetized for very little money. For photos/postcards that you really want to display, you can get a light-weight picture frame, glue magnets on the back, put it on the fridge & corral that stuff inside the frame. Or if glass makes you nervous you can find one with plexiglass, or get a sheet of plexiglass from the hardware store. Or remove the glass & backing entirely & just stick the frame on the fridge. This way you don't have little stuff all over the fridge; just one frame with stuff inside it. (I did that because my husband apparently cannot live without family pictures on the front of the fridge...and I cannot live with visual clutter, so I came up with a compromise.)

    I would ask the landlord if she is allowed to paint the cabinets. It would be an improvement for future tenants as well. The paint might be neater and cheaper. My landlord would not let me paint my 1960-70's kitchen cabinets. I did cover the top cabinets with white contact paper. I added peel and stick handles to them.. the darn things didn't even have pulls. Some landlords will not let you touch certain things and with today's market for rentals you don't want to pi$$ off your landlord.

    HEY RYAN!! The green living room with green curtains: they blend in a bit. Get a different color of curtains, or patterned ones! HEY SHAUNA!! Fridge: A rotating gallery. Kid's art one at a time and rotate them though. Have kids help you decide every Tuesday (or whatever) which item should be on display. If you want to get super-fancy, there are magnetic frames you can use (or make, in different lengths). But it also gets kids involved in curation, which is a cool thing to learn, and to be able to talk about and appreciate what they have created even more than just a display.

    Nick's suggestions are always spot on and so helpful but I'm going to dissent and say that Shauna should just lean into the whole retro 70s vibe. Unless you really hate that 70s look (no, I get it) I think it can be really fun to play it up PLUS the 70s are on trend rn. Totally agree with decluttering the space and getting rid of the battery-operated string lights. But what if you painted the entire kitchen a sandy peach color, one that is a little toned down from that accent wall. Add some plants (in macrame hangers, of course!) and retro dishes and mugs (either groovy daisies or speckled earthenware for a more natural look). Maybe some patterned curtains. Add a floor lamp and 1970s movie/art poster against that accent wall? Vogue even has an article posted online this year called "Why 1970s Interior Design Is Trending Again" so there's probably lots of inspiration out there (Pinterest for example).

    I’m kind of in the same situation as Shauna. The reason why my appliances are out on the counters is because all my cabinets are not tall enough or wide enough to fit them. Even my drawers are very narrow. My apartment was built in the 80’s and the cabinets are very dated. I did my best with the contact paper and peel and stick backsplash and it looks better. Another thing I did was get matching appliances that are more ascetically pleasing to look at.

Some DIY options, though, such as an entire wall of cat shelves, ramps & boxes might be a fantastic alternative to a gallery wall & could be painted in a riot of colors if Ryan had a passion for major DIY. There was a house (in San Diego, CA I think) years ago that had been DIY'd into an Incredible Disneyland for cats. There was a book & at one time a yt video. Don't know if the yt is still available. It was just mind boggling & That would certainly fit with Ryan's vibe!

    I think if Shauna makes the cabinets one color, and covers the backsplash with a more harmonious color, that countertop might work with the floor. They both seem like they're 'stone' oriented and their colors go together. And then deal with some clutter. I'm a renter, too, I know that's hard. In my kitchen, the lower cabinet's opening is only 8" wide! (Even though it's about 3 feet deep. 🙄) I can't fit my cast iron pots in it and I'm certainly not putting them up high. I had to get a pyramidal pot rack that stands in a corner. Except for my pantry, almost nothing is able to be stored in a logical place. There's not much counter space, either, which is another challenge for Shauna.

Another thing she could do is peel and stick for the backsplash. I like her floor too. I don’t like the curtains being pulled back like that. It looks dated. They should hang straight, or get a fabric Roman shade or reeded roller shade. The color of the table might be fighting with the floor. She could paint it. While cat furniture is a necessity, it can be made so much more attractive than your basic carpet-and-sisal-covered cardboard-tube cat tree. Houses used to have picture rail molding running all the way around the living room. Why not get some really beautiful shelving material (e.g. stained & sealed natural wood) and run it all the way around the room about 12 to 24 inches from the ceiling? Provide a few creative ways for kitties to get up to the cat walk (ahem!) and back down again. Cover at least part of the shelf top with carpet strips or secure woven sisal strips. Scatter a little catnip on the carpets and mats. Cats need to get up high, stretch, and sharpen their claws. But these functions can be beautiful additions to the room.

I think the white contact paper does make the cabinets look better but might not really be renter friendly as I feel it might peel the paint off or leave residue when removing. peel and stick wallpaper would be a better option and does come in solid colors including white. use peel and stick tile for the backsplash. yes, less clutter. omg the entertaining/party space is making me jealous. what a great space for fun. keep the pool table. set it up for games. get an outdoor dining table and chairs and maybe even outdoor sofa and you have the perfect recipe for indoor outdoor parties. and yes make the bar area shine. oh the parties I will miss.

    A fun way to display children’s art that will make them feel special and will make the home feel less cluttered than hanging it on the fridge is to buy “pocket frames” and hang three or four in your kitchen or another high traffic area of the home. They have a hinge and a pocket behind the glass so you can change out the image in seconds and it’s also storage for the enormous body of work that children sometimes produce!

    If Ryan could help me finish my house that would be great. I feel some kinship with them as I look at my bright yellow kitchen walls

    I loved Ryan’s courageous colour use. I’m a colour addict myself. Your advice was spot on in my opinion. For Shauna’s kitchen I would just contact paper the upper units and leave the more durable original surface on the lower ones. Ikea used to make some backsplash panels with tracks just for the purpose of hiding poorly chosen tiles like these.

    Totally agree with your take on the first space. I really loved his wall colors and the general idea of the space immediately - and I wanted more - some rugs, way more art, more plants, books, records, interesting lighting. If I weren’t a peasant, I’d play with colors like that in my apartment and indulge my maximalist soul…. Maybe I just want to experience it vicariously through his house 😂

    Braai is more typically an outdoor grill in South Africa. Outdoor BBQ-ing in South Africa is very popular. (Not South African, just learned this when I visited recently) The first home is pretty great, but the only thing I'd like to see in places like the bedroom is weaving the wall colour a bit more into the rest of the room to make it look a bit more cohesive.

    Hi! For Ryan, I think some patterns like the ones from Matthew Williamson would look stunning in your house. I personally love the botanicals from him, but he has some lovely peacock inspired ones that I think you would like. Love your jewel toned walls!

    I absolutely love Ryan's 'mid century drag' home, & the examples for suggestions you gave. I get the idea that he's someone with a really fun, unique personality based on the colors & decor he chose.

    I bought a cat shelf that suctions to the window which I love because it’s so streamline and doesn’t take over the design of the room. One of the best things I’ve bought for my home!

    Braai rooms like that are so normal in South African, which is a room used for nightly gatherings. The culture is built around regular social gatherings sharing food and eatting lots of MEAT.
