I have an 8 year old Golden who as a puppy would drag me down the street. Then we got our Gentle Leader. What a huge difference it's made. We've used it every walk and every vet visit. It changed everything. She became a well behaved dog an we love to walk together. I would say its one of the best investments I ever made . I now also have a 4 month old Golden too, and am beginning his gentle leader walks today.

Ava it’s hard to redirect a dog that’s been pulling his whole life! I put it on my 3 year old pit bull rescue and you would have thought I was trying to kill her! She rolled around and carried on like a spoiled child! It takes time and patience, soon they will be glad to put the GL on because they know it’s walk time! You have to be sure to only have pressure on the GL when he’s NOT doing what you want and let go of pressure as soon as he’s doing it right (walking calmly beside you). You have to train yourself as well, or it’s just confusing for him! At first, they do nothing but pull and flip out, so it’s hard to not have any pressure on the leader! Start in the house or yard with treats before stepping up to the outside walk when they’re super excited! And maybe do what Cesar Milan does, take the dog for a super long walk to get him exhausted before you start training, so he’s a little more calm than at the beginning of the walk when they’re freaking nuts! !!!

Just bought one, after trying various other collars and leads. This works fabulously on my jack russell x staffordshire bull terrier. She is pure muscle and wearing this, she immediately came to heel and walked brilliantly. I personally don't think this is cruel at all, it doesn't restrict them smelling, eating, barking, chewing, drinking, and most especially breathing!! In my opinion its much kinder than many more other leads. Thanks for the vid :D

Chris thanks for answering. In the past couple if months our walks have really changed. Macy is now walking she is a little stubborn but I have been trying to assert myself more and it is working. Tonight we walked 6 miles met a guy with 2 dogs I just crossed the street and Macy only looked. No barking no going bananas, then almost at the same time we came upon 2 more dogs who were not on leases when we first met them and I must say they were very well behaved but my Macy would have gone crazy jumping and flipping and trying to get to them but because of the gentle leader I was able to control her I have nothing but praise for the gentle leader. When we are just walking without any "friends" I feel like I am not even holding the leash. Thank you for making my life easier. Macy gets her treats, drinks water, barks. And does everything she needs to do.

It would have been really helpful to see the reaction to the Gentle Leader of dogs that actually pull on the leash, not of ones that are already trained.

I'm working with my german shepherd with help of dog behaviorist. I needed some help because of pulling and jumping on other dogs, cars and everything else that is moving fast or loud. She (dog) wasn't angry just barked and wanted to chase. day 1-3 my dog tried hard to take it from its head but it was easier to walk with day 4-8 - dog started to behave even worse than before using gentle leader. Dog was pulling and jumping way stronger than before and was way more angry/irritated than before. Maybe even a bit aggressive. day 9-12(right now) - after those fighting days it looks like there are finally some results, but its way too early to say if it will help for longer period. On our last walk dog even started to listen to what I'm saying and wasn't jumping on cars which is some great improvement. According to my behaviorist with problematic dogs 1st 2 weeks using gentle leader might be hell but after that dog should give up and there should be some results. In my case it was at 12th day that it was better but there is still long way for us to train it to behave like dogs on this video. Anyway before we tried regular collar, dog harness and easy-walk harness. Till now this one seems most promising.

My experience is the gengle leader is awesome! My dog (40lb aussie-shepard mix) pulled like crazy on a normal leash/collar setup. She would try to slip a normal collar and pulled on leash. A harness was better for slipping, but she still pulled like a sled dog. Initially, she didn't like the gentle leader (pawed at her face) for the first 10 minutes. Afterwards she did really well with it. Sometimes she will paw at it for a moment when putting it on, but once we start walking, she is fine. We use it two or three times a week now for runs and she doesn't paw any longer. She doesn't give trouble putting it on anymore and is much easier to walk/run/hike with.

It has not done a thing to help stop the pulling. I have a 1 year old golden retriever non-neutered dog. I've watched so many KZread videos to stop your dog from pulling and tried so many different methods and was hopeful for this tool. However, it has not phased in many poles just as hard.😳😳

I have been wanting to adopt a dog for years and my husband and I welcome our Golden Retriever, Jake into our home in January. I have always wanted a walking buddy, but Jake is big and strong and he pulls and tugs way too much. Walks were becoming more of a chore and not very fun at all... I bought one for my golden retriever puppy on amazon. I got the green one. It's awesome he doesn't pull people can give him treats without him jusmping on them he behaves really great!! Love it!

i’m so thankful for this tool! i adopted a mini eski 2 months ago and walks were so stressful. this tiny dog is STRONG and reactive and nearly choked herself with a regular collar and still wheezed with a harness. her short snout does make it even easier for the nose loop to be pawed off but we’re working on it with treats! the head collar alone attached to her main collar actually gets her to slow down and breathe-no more lunging or even barking at passerby. if you’re doubting any type of head collar, all i can say is try it before you knock it and you just may be amazed.

Some people use shock or prong collars instead of the gentle leader.

This works great on my 1 year old Jack Russell. Our walks have been so much more enjoyable now. His constant pulling started to hurt my shoulder. Upon first use, the pulling stopped. Love it and definitely recommend it. The only downfall is that we get a lot of weird looks from other pet owners as they mistaken it as a muzzle.

very thorough. I am a professional dog walker and I have always been wary of these, I thought they were a tool for "lazy" dog owners. This notion came from the way that the users presented the product to me. They talked about how the tool "calmed" their dog, not about how and why it actually worked.

Funk then you’re doing it wrong! It should be associated with good things! Walks, treats, etc. It IS NOT a form of punishment. It is only a GENTLE reminder to stay with the walker and not pull.

Actually Paula is right. The whole effort is to be done *gently and with love* . The inclination is to be harsh and punitive, out of fear. But head harnesses change everything. Now you can be gentle and enjoy walking you dog, and be sociable with people on the street and maybe even other dogs!

Literally just put this on my dog, who is a human walker, for the first time. He’s a large 6 year old non-neutered Weimaraner. He hated it at first and started rubbing his face in the carpet a bunch so I hooked up the leash and took him outside immediately. It was night and day, no pulling at all. He would stop occasionally and act like he was dying and tried to get it off with his paws but then I would quickly give him a calming hug to let him know it was okay then start the walk again. I’ve never walked my dog for more then 15 minutes. We walked for an hour and a half and I wasn’t exhausted afterwards. Just takes some patience and confidence that it will work.

The Gentle Leader works great. It works on the same principle as a horse lead -- pulling the animal's snout in the direction s/he should go. It's much better than choking his/her throat the way pulling on a collar can.

yes, you can pull a huge bull around by the ring through his nose. These are cruel and you can tell that dogs are sad and anxious with them on and cannot display their normal behaviour

If your dog has trouble getting used to a head halter, you might need to have a trainer familiar with them to coach you on leash handling skills. Here are some tips. Usually the problems are: * Incorrect fit * Using the headcollar as a threat...the "naughty dog" collar * Trying to hold the dog in place or hold the dog back with a tight leash as you are used to with your other collars or harnesses - The least amount of tension is needed, just as you use the reins when riding a horse - Make the leash short enough that the dog cannot get in front of you or cross over in front of you to trip you - It is not necessary to jerk or pull hard on this tool. Doing so will make your dog pull against it as it does on other harnesses or collars you've tried. * Unwillingness to use food rewards to reward behavior you want - Delicious food rewards distract the dog in the beginning, allowing taking some steps without tension on the leash * Poor timing or placement of the rewards - Reward the dog while there is no tension on the leash - Reward the dog as close to your leg as possible * Holding the food in front of the dog's nose to lure the dog with treats - When the lure goes away the nice walking behavior goes away * Thick, rough, clumsy leashes or snaps or flimsy hardware on the leash - Use something soft on your hands with a sturdy snap. IMPORTANT! Never use a retractable (Flexi) leash with a headcollar. Do not use a headcollar on a tie-out. Do not allow your dog to run to the end of the leash and torque his neck. Keep him close until he learns to walk without pulling or lunging. THEN you can give him more exploring room. Dogs with long muzzles are difficult to fit with this tool. It does ride up into the eyes. Perhaps a Halti Optifit is better. Regardless, follow the instructions and fit these tools properly.

I have seen dogs with sores on their nose where the fur has been pulled off by these harnesses. If so many things can go wrong with these then they should be banned. I'm sure that vets do a roaring trade in treating blisters on dogs muzzles.

Picked mine up today after going through 3 chest harnesses. Went on a 3 mile walk with no pulling or tugging. I have a 17 pound Terrier mix that pulled like a 100 pound Chow. Should have bought this first. Could have saved myself $75 and a whole lotta frustration. Give it a shot...if your'e having the same issue. Petsmart (I'm sure others as well) have a great return policy. Good Luck

Diesel really pulls on the leash and this has made me able to walk a 55 pound dog at age 70+ with control. He still resists me putting it on and tries to get it off but gives up eventually if he is eager to get outside.

Find another solution. How about a body harness and a lead that has some bounce in it, that's what I use and it works great

OMG Even the manufacturer says don't use on puppies. You will end up with a depressed dog. Puppies can't pull you about.

Is it better to go up or down on the sizes if your dog is on the cusp? Mine is 25lbs and small size says up to 25lbs and medium is 25lbs to 60lbs. He is an Irish Terrier mix so not sure which to go for.

My dog wore it for a few days. She kept pawing at it. She started an abrasion under the nose loop below her eyes. We took it off. She keeps scratching and now the wound is bigger. So I’m very frustrated. I have an infection to deal with.

I had a lab that just freaked out if I tried to put this on - so I gave up - got a new dog and she’s 3 now she was pulling me horribly and I’m getting older so had to try something ! A pulled this out and was amazed she didn’t mind it at all!! She was a totally different dog!

I have a whippet that pulls so hard on collars he chokes and can slip out of ANY harness (it's so frustrating)! I want a gentle leader but how is the fit on a dog with such a long face? I'm worried it might slip into his eyes?

My little ninja girl is a whippet lab cross, an expert at taking it off. Fit it at a comfortable fit like you would wear your belt. The loup behind the ears keeps it from coming off. I fed the under chin leader through the back rings of a chest harness to be sure she couldn't get it off. We have peaceful walks now. I'm training her to go beside my mobility scooter. Great security dog. Patience and gentleness are required. And some training.

We are loving to use this on our pet who is a Lab mix , 7 months old. I had a question. Its been only 5 days of using it and he is still getting used to it. We notice a red line on nose top, where the band sits. Is this normal as its something new we are putting on his nose? How to avoid this or will this go off ?

If it's making a red mark, I would discontinue using it until it heals. Chafing is usually caused by improper fit and/or too much continuous tension on the leash. Make sure that the neck strap is tight like a watch and high up around the ears. If the neck strap is too loose and the nose strap too tight, this will cause the nose loop to rotate back and forth across the muzzle causing chafing. The nose loop should sit behind the corners of the dog's mouth when he is not panting. If you put a couple of fingers in the nose loop and pull it toward the end of the nose, it should stop just short of where the leathery part of the nose begins. It should in no way hold the dog's mouth shut or look like it's pinching anywhere around the muzzle. If the nose loop is too loose, the dog can easily fling it off with its paws or by rolling around on the ground. If it seems like it's fitted correctly and you find yourself having to hold the dog back with the headcollar and the dog is bearing into the headcollar, I would try to get some help from a trainer experienced in using the Gentle Leader to troubleshoot this with you. I would also bring a lot of delicious treats with you to reward the dog while he is walking nicely next to you. Reward the dog immediately as he's in the correct position right by your leg. Otherwise, keep the treat out of the picture. This works much better than luring (holding the food in front of the dog's nose to get him into position or keep him in position) or bribing the dog by showing him the food to try to get him to stay in position. Catch him doing it right! Good luck!

The leader or halti doesn't have to be on tight at all. I've had the halti on my whippet lab 5 year old female, for about 3 weeks. The change in her control habits was fantastic. I can put 3 fingers under the soft cotton double tape. Last Sunday she sniffed a bush and a cat exploded out of it! Well she tried to climb the rock wall kitty climbed but I was easily able to control her 50 pounds. She pulls about a tenth as much. By the way, she can get it off when she comes in the house.

demo shows pull on throat not on nose; the nose is what is being pulled. I think the emphasis should be the strap behind the ears or the head, not the nose?

What about leash aggression? When my dog sees another dog,she immediately pulls towards them,starts barking,whining, snarling, etc. I feel like with this she would somehow escape it or it just wouldnt work at all.

SAMMIsLIFE I have a service dog in training and she is a little reactive to dog not in the since that she wants to hurt them but she wants to play and gets excited I got the Gentle Leader and it changed immediately she wasn't pulling towards the dog or anything like that she did still have a little bit of whining but with a few Corrections she stopped, I think it's a really good tool

Yes, I do recommend it but go look for really quality ones. I'm sure there are those that Made in USA or Australia. Also I got a easy gentle halter for my golden boy. He too now walks gently. Seriously no more pulling. Previously I was so stressed and angry when I walked them now, believe me it is a breeze! Highly recommended it. The easy gentle harness is Made in Taiwan but surprisingly the quality is way better quality than the gentle leader that was Made In China.

@@SexySheerah : Just because it's made in China doesn't automatically mean it's of poor quality. Most of the "big brand" names (like Apple) we associate with being "high end" products are made in China. Like everything else, regardless of whether it's made in Aust. the UK, Germany, the USA or China.. what you pay is what you get.

This works great for walks, my dog doesn't pull at all with this. BUT whenever he gets overly excited (sees another dog, hears a dog behind a fence, walking up to the dog park) he goes absolutely nuts and starts pawing at his face and biting at the leash. He's made himself bleed, he's made me bleed. He jumps up at me then drops to the ground screaming like he's being beaten. I know he's just excited but Oh my God it's a nightmare. This leash does not work well for those situations.

its not a cure-all solution, but a training tool. You need to work on training your dog in that situation.

Exactly, these are so cruel. Can't stand how miserable they make dogs look. It makes me feel sad too. When will vets or the RSPCA speak out about them? It is plain to see.

I am at the end of my rope! My rescue dog is VERY dog aggressive. She pulls me into the street or knocks me down, trying to get at other dogs on the street. I will never use a prong or choke collar on her, but this sounds promising.

I have two rescue dogs.Both huge breeded and different.One is a 4/5 month old puppy and weighs 32 pounds.Same thing for the other its just the other one is 10 years old.They drag me on walks to where its so dangerous for me and the pets.

make sure neckstrap is tight and your dog shpuldnt be able to.slip out of nose loop, you can adjust the noseloop by understanding clip the sliding the snap clamp and slid it shirter, read the directions watch the video it tells you how

Maybe, but only a fraction of what he used to, right? You still have to train your dog, but a gentle tug reminds him to stop and come back to heel. Soon you'll be walking loosely held leash. The leash will just be a formality to assure others you have control. Not struggling, but easy going.

This just the same as the halti head collar.

+norma jean actually the halti is a little better since it is thicker. i had this and she broke it in a week by figuring out how to slip it off. it was the clip that broke. we use the holt now, which is thicker, does not get in her eyes, and has padding to keep her comfy

I agree. The halti is best. I made one out of a purse strap, soft back double tape. It had a rectangular ring And I sewed it holding the right fit in place. It has a one-foot lead out from under her chin, into which I inserted a nylon tape with a ring at both ends. The leash attaches to those two rings, so she has about 7 feet of leash altogether. We are getting perfect walks almost every time. She's had it about 3 weeks. I was particularly glad she couldn't pull me in the snow and ice.

It took *me* and my puppy a couple of days to get used to it. But now she's totally calm with cars blowing by at 35 mph, and when strangers make eye contact, and when she sees another dog, or when she sees people she likes. I was worried because I'm training her to be my service dog and she has to have rock solid manners at all times. And before I began using the GL, she was nothing but a hybrid popcorn machine and boiling water.

@@jazzypoo7960 Totally agree. My lab/whippet pulled me down and I broke a rib her first month. I had walked her in the woods with no leash for five years and suddenly I had her in town and boy everything ignited her. After I made a halti for her things completely changed. Now I am safe and I don't fear being pulled down.

Fucking dog chewed it off the day I got it.

First thank you for your video I could use a little help I did everything the way you showed to put the leader on Buddy (my 100 lb golden retriever) He is super high energy and I am unable to walk him because he pulls and drags me ! Anyway I tried to walk him on the leader and he flipped out He picks up how paw and grabs at the least Whips his head around Please help how do I tame this beast ?

is that dog a catahoula?

I love our Gentle Leader and this makes walking my boxer mix so much easier for me only problem is she won't walk. she will hang her head and refuse to go anywhere. She is driving me crazty one day we can go 3 or 4 miles nex day we can go 3-4 houses. Help I don't know what I am doing wrong.

marley walker this may not be a leash/collar/harness issue. Our boxer stopped wanting to walk, among other things, and it turned out he had pancreatitis. Zaps energy, and can be painful. Not saying that's what it is, I'm just letting you know.

So what happens when you stop giving treats and praise?

the more your dog begins to understand what it is they're expected to do, the less treats are needed. the goal is making the desired behavior worth more than the undesirable. Once your dog is reliably offering the behavior you want, you can begin to phase treats out by asking for more before treating, then mixing in only verbal praise down to simply praising or treating periodically just to continue to reinforcing the desired behavior. I haven't needed to actually treat my dog in over a year now for walking nicely. Not pulling is just a habit now.

Jake The dog I’m sure it would! Especially since beagles don’t seem to have the same issues with breathing like boxers, bulldogs, etc.

I think you treat too much! The gentle leader is a great tool if used properly! I don’t use treats past 9 months old!

If you can get your dog to put this on...your dog probably doesn't need it. It seems to rest very close to the sensitive area under the dog's eyes...I don't like that and I doubt the dog would.

Just look around when you're out. Most dogs wearing these collars look sad, anxious and have had their spirit broken. They anticipate their owners every move so as to minimise the pain that they will suffer. This works by cruelty and is only allowed because dogs can't speak. Shame on the manufacturers.

My dog is an asshole and won't let me put it on him. It turns into a wrestling match.

It takes a great deal of patience with that breed, so relax. One tiny step at a time shown clearly in the video at the end. Wrestling match is no good! He needs to be handled gently, and slowly - a few successes a day. This may not be for him. We've had JR's. They are difficult.

Resist the temptation to hurry the training process. It's worth it. First train "come, sit, stay". Then come sit stay calm and wait for the harness to be put on. Same for taking it off.

NEVER USE A "NOT SO" Gentle Leader, your dog is not a horse, you don't use two reins, you don't sit on your dog behind his neck. You continually jerk the dog's neck even if you don't try and the band around the nose makes it hard for them to truly pant when needed or yawn, when needed, for more than more reason, read body posture. If you cannot train your dog without this, you don't need to own a dog. IF you put this on a puppy, you'd better keep re-fitting it as your dog grows, IF you still think this should be on your dog. Mother dogs teach their puppies with a mouth around their muzzle for doing "wrong", this training tool just tells the dog he's WRONG ALL THE TIME, THEY SCRATCH IT OFF, EVEN MONTHS LATER, AND THERE ARE BETTER WAYS OF TRAINING. I have been training "people" with their dogs for 30 years, classes three times a week for 8 years, I've seen every dog and NEVER used this evil head collar. I have owned six Belgian breeds, and have done Conformation, Obedience, Rally Obedience, Agility, Tracking and Herding. I've seen little girls at dog shows able to handle a BIG dog in the ring with just a "show" chain, the dog is never the problem, the person is, so if your trainer is having you use this, they can't help you, plain and simple, find another trainer, fast before they ruin your dog.

you had a comment 3 years ago... think what that says about the device. I met the co-inventor 20 years ago and was unimpressed then. Prongs are time proven and work well and do not hurt a dog's face as this one does.

These cause a lot of nose damage. It doesn’t actually teach a dog to stop pulling it’s just you don’t feel the pressure as bad because you are basically just holding the dogs nose back rather than a harness your holding the whole body weight. It’s a short cut you need to actually train your dog to not pull while walking they aren’t born ready to know how to walk on leash they don’t understand so don’t give them a punishment and use them to keep them in control. What if your dog all the sudden seen a squirrel and yanked real bad not only does it irritate the skin it also causes damage in the dogs nose etc. imagine wearing something like that while walking in the heat sweating with that over your nose it would be irritating and nasty. You have pulling issues with your dog actually train it in their mind rather than using a device as a short cut. I literally trained my dog to stop pulling with a harness. Each time she would pull forward I would turn in the opposite direction and when would walk nice I would keep walking and that was the reward you walk nice we keep going forward, because dogs don’t like going backwards it’s boring to them.

Couldn't agree more. I see so many sad, and anxious dogs with these on. Tails down looking depressed. They should be banned.

It is harder to put on then it seems or Mabye just because I am in a bad mood. I didn't think about it and I just put it on my dog immediately without treats and I got mad and I don't know what i was thinking

13 minute video but the key stuff is done in 15 seconds at the 3:45 spot. Had to watch 10 times. Also add in the begging an outline of what and when you will show something. Poorly done

Don't like them I seen humans putting on too tight and this leaving a deep mark in the face, I say lets look at humans wearing this getting them in order don't you think we got a lot of ill treatment out there to our beautiful animals so humans need the training.

I own two dogs.One is a 4/5 month old puppy 32 pounds (shes a big breed), and then i have a 10 year old dog.Both LOVE to go on walks. Theres just one problem...they are very strong breeds and big.They like to pull and i get worried that they could choke,stop their airways, or injure someone.I tried harnesses and that fixed the choking problem.But not the pulling.I bought two for both dogs and they seem to be safer.It used to been so dangerous to walk them.Also they head collars only cause marks if you put it too tight or you're un-educated.

those things suck. get a prong collar.

Gentle leader my arse you pull it becomes tighter therefore becoming tighter where the dogs nasal tubes are therefore making it harder for your dog so dog thinks I better behave or I'm gonna get hurt using fear against dogs ? That's not training what so ever

Are you kidding? Do some research kid. It doesn't tighten as you pull, it just simply turns their head towards you when they pull. It's not placed on their snout or nose, so it doesn't affect the dog's breathing at all. That is why it's placed between the snout and the eyes. Ask any vet. You think you're more entitled to say how it affects a dog vs. a vet? Really? You're not.

I have a different type, holt walking collar by top paw. My dog loves it secound day no treats and he was wagging his tail and put his muzzle through and this is a dog who if doesn't want to do somthing will run away and bark. He's a stroung dog a malanois akita mix with no training and pure muscle, and only can take him once a day for an hour with my arm so sore from my walk that it feels like it's on fire. He's a big puppy that I adopted (9 months old ). It was danger walking him as he was tripped my and tried dragging me, and he was wheezing and checking himself so this makes both of use enjoy are walks and can take him twice a day like he needs to. So how bad can it be, if my dog loves his more then a collar? Yes um still training him it's just this things help me have better control

They don’t mind or notice it at all if used properly. It’s not a muzzle, it’s comfortable and it works wonderfully. What’s horrible is never taking your dog for a walk because it’s unpleasant for both of you, if this helps you to actually take your dog out and about it’s a wonderful thing.

These do not work, use a prong collar.

Another one too lazy to work with their dog. Prong collars pinch the throat and CAN cause damage to a dog who ignores pain or just gets angrier like a bull dog.

Lazy, idiotic people that can't use a simple pressure based device, like a choke chain, to train their dog how to walk on a loose leash are somehow supposed to be able to fit and use this pressure based dog "bridle"? I don't think so.

Hagen Steele I'm not lazy, stupid or inexperienced but I have a 80 lb Giant Schnauzer and I have arthritis in my hands. I could use a pinch/prong collar but with the Gentle Leader I don't have to. The thing you call a "choke collar" is a training collar. It is only a choke collar if you use it incorrectly. My dog is already trained. I use the Gentle Leader to insure my dog's safety. Any dog can become distracted, chase a squirrel or be frightened by something unfamiliar. The GL allows me to be in control even with my weakened hands. It is a great tool for those who learn how to use it. My dog loves her long daily walks and loves her GL.
