Paul Cooijmans has developed a view on creativity (and genius, its high end) as a synergy of intelligence, conscientiousness, and associative horizon. The last two thereof are typical of Asperger syndrome, be it not necessarily in all cases where conscientiousness is concerned. This means that the minority of persons with Asperger who in addition have high intelligence are likely to become geniuses, or at least creative.

I had imposter syndrome for most of my life. My father was a PhD in biochemistry and my brother is a PhD in biophysics. I don't know to this day whether I was much better in science than I imagined myself to be or whether I just didn't like it as much as I thought I should have, but I decided not to be a scientist and became a lawyer instead. I always thought that I had an above average IQ, but only slightly above average. I had the classic symptom of imposter syndrome. I always thought that if I could do something, almost any one could do it. It took me a long time to realize that was not the case. I can do things that most other people can not do. And my IQ turned out to be in the top 2 percent when I finally had the nerve to take an IQ test when I was well into my 50's (I will be 70 later this year). And I found out from other professionals who are good friends of mine, that they have imposter syndrome as well. We have all joked about it for years. One is an MD, an anesthesiologist/addictionologist, and another is a Captain for a major airline. We all have joked many times about how we got to where we are and that there had to be lots of clueless people that we duped. But obviously that was not the case. We were all far more capable than we ever thought we were. I would like to share with you a valuable lesson I learned about imposter syndrome, and have actually got my pilot friend to accept as well. When you think you are average and you are not, then you have a real tendency to think that other people can do what looks easy to you, when for them it is not easy at all. It is very easy to have expectations of other people that are not realistic. And you have to guard against thinking that these people are lazy or have some kind of moral failure. Enjoyed both your videos on the Denning Kruger effect and on Imposter syndrome.

I can relate. I am playing guitar for more than 30 years, yet, when people asked wether I am any good at it, I would be very moderate in my answer. Later on I wondered... If I play for 30 years ... really, I am pretty good at it. So now I am comfortable saying it, eventually.

It's interesting how we are supposed to downplay our talents in much of "polite" society in order to appear humble ... as well as genuinely seeing the faults that make us less than perfect. I wonder if Mozart ever listened to a symphony of his later and thought, "I should have added this or less of that." I'm guessing he, painters, musicians and anyone who is self aware has thought/felt that way from time to time. Thanks for your response!

I'm not surprised and congratulations on carving out such an accomplished life. Have you noticed that so many people have a false perception of even what intelligence basically entails even in our groups? I've largely stopped trying to discuss it with people. It's not even that tough of a concept but even in the TNS I've seen that argument take place far too many times and it simply bores me now. People use the same old arguments over and over again (on many issues) and believe they are having an intellectual conversation with one another without offering much (if any) of their own unique thoughts). I'm not as active nowadays in these groups simply because I'd rather follow my own path and don't require or even desire too much input or the approval of the tribe. I'd rather have peace, enjoy nature, and simply enjoy truly being me. I hope you're enjoying your journey. Be well.

@@jefferyford5309 I thank you for taking the time to respond to me in such a nuanced way. Quite honestly, I haven’t spent much time learning what people in the various high/ultra-high IQ groups think, about anything. I’ve scanned enough TNS Facebook comments to know that many members spend an inordinate amount of time arguing about matters that are of little interest to me. I’m confident that the majority of these people are civil human beings outside of the forums, but I decline the “opportunity” to be pulled into internecine bickering about group governance. Regarding imposter syndrome, I try my my best to respect my abilities without making too much of them. I congratulate you on being an excellent ambassador for profound giftedness!

And create an Affinity with the group. for his reality to stick.......... you shouldn't like that.. just be who you want and if you resonate with that awesome.

Einstein, Tesla and every other genius were once geniuses without any publicly known accomplishments. That didn't make them any less of a genius. You are not a genius because you accomplished something the world would deem as genius ... you can accomplish those things because you already are a genius.

It doesn’t make sense to me the “keep moving forward” why? No one cares anyways especially if your talents don’t lie in harvesting devices or shooting rockets up to the moon we’re all gonna die and all that everything is boring. I feel like I’m missing something essential in my brain that everyone else has. I think it’s some sort of drive to do anything. Can you help me with that? No one can. I touch things and let them down one second later. It’s exhausting to be in this state, I also wasn’t really raised. Can you please help me with that? How do I raise myself at 25 when all the processes are done. All I have is biohacking but I don’t see results (fast enough). I would love some help because I try to be a good human being but no one told me things as a kid. All I have is self doubt and struggles. I can’t be in this state any longer. Please, you rarely get the chance to talk to someone with an iq over the 99. Percent thing. Please 🙏🏻 I try to do everything on my own but I’m burnt out and at my wits end. I’m thinking about killing myself on the regular (small lol)

Strangely enough, I was ridiculed/bullied so much as a small child and teenager that when a co-worker suggested that I should have an IQ exam because he thought I had a high IQ, I thought he was making fun of me! Just like many other people with high IQs I minimized my strengths and exaggerated my shortcomings. I'll always be thankful for him because if it wasn't for his suggestion I would be living a much different, less purposeful life. People change people.

How similar our childhood experiences are Jeffrey. Though one wouldn't think it, as I grew up in a west side Chicago ghetto. I too was labeled "gifted" very early, but had a parent who refused to allow me to be sent to a school for the gifted. I was subsequently beaten, ridiculed etc., etc., until I became a pseudo bona fide "thug". I survived and eked out a rather comfortable living in the high-tech sector. In your words, I see a common brotherhood... peaceful

I think the word "genius" is horribly overused. To think that genius is merely a high IQ score, cheapens the word. I think you have to earn it. Not just spout intellectually sounding bull crap, but real accomplishment in whatever field. I had friends who I considered real geniuses in one field, but were tortured by the unrequited temptation to go in another direction they were not as good at. I knew a genius artist waste years of his life trying to write an epic cycle of novels, which he never finished and weren't very good anyway. Also an inspired writer who pined to be a rock star, and flopped badly. I guess we can't all be renaissance men.
