GENIUS! Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy FIRST REACTION

Музыка

What a lovely surprise! Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest delivered a work of art with this Twin Fantasy project. It blew my expectation out of the water, and I'm super glad that I've finally listened to it! Also I realised 'Life-In-Death' also sounds like 'Life in Depth', not just 'Life and Death' which I thought was pretty cool.

small anecdote : I got my father to stop smoking by having him listen to the song stop smoking, since then he's been listening to a lot of car seat headrest, he loves it as much as I do and I'm very happy to be able to share this with him.

AAAHHHH THIS IS SO AMAZING I LOVE THIS REACTION. the original ver of this album is basically just a way more lo-fi version of the album, with a few lyrical differences, but the major difference is famous prophets. in the 2011 version, it was titled famous prophets (minds) and was only 10 minutes long with almost entirely different lyrics, whilst the newer version aka famous prophets (stars) combined it with another old song he made back in 2013, called unfinished: pain star. i still find the 2011 ver to be really great, but it's definitely not an easy listen for people that aren't accustomed to lo-fi production. his other albums r really really good!! if you want to listen to more csh, i recommend teens of denial first and then how to leave town if you want to ease into the more lo-fi production before listening to the older stuff. a few fun facts about twin fantasy/csh in general: the line "i'm not gonna end up a nervous wreck, like the people i know who are nervous wrecks" is from a song will made under his old alias, nervous young men. the line after it, "i'm not gonna name names, yours was an exception" is used in the context of this song because in famous prophets (minds) he literally says "for three transgressions of wurtz, and for four i will not revoke the punishment" in reference to cate wurtz. he literally names names. the album art was drawn by will himself and has since become iconic! the one used for face to face is just a retraced version of the mirror to mirror one. the monologue in nervous young inhumans was changed from the original mainly because the original monologue was built off a word that isn't actually real. in mirror to mirror will went on a rant about the word "galvanistic" (which isn't a word, the correct word is galvanic) and what it meant to him in terms of the relationship, the chorus was previously also "you galvanistic young boy, you galvanistic young man, you galvanistic young inhuman" the stop smoking/keep smoking thing is incorporated in some of will's other tracks off different albums as well, most notably songs from the follow-up album to mirror to mirror released in 2012, monomania. it's sort of a sign that whatever the song is about is this particular relationship. cate and will are on good terms now and she actually drew the cover art for csh's latest album, making a door less open! she's also done a bunch of other stuff for the band and seemingly has made amends with will and all that stuff. beach death, beach funeral, and beach f-words are all songs from csh's album 3, which came out in 2010. there's even more songs with the beach motif, beach weak and beach drugs, but they aren't mentioned in beach life-in-death. "in the mall in the nighttime, you came back alone with a flashlight" is a reference to cate's long running furry comic crow cillers, which will has openly raved about on tumblr and is a major fan of. he has a lot more songs that have references to her body of work as well. another person will is a major fan of is frank ocean! you could probably tell based off all the references but he's also covered self control and white ferrari, the latter of which he combined with twin fantasy (those boys) to make a beautiful combination of two heartbreakingly good songs. perfect. i'm so glad you enjoyed the album!! it's my fav album of all time and it means so much to me, i love recommending it to other people. thank you for reacting!!! also his name is will toe-ledo and not will to-led-oh lmao

you are right re BCNR and CSHR. Two of my favourite artists of all time. In fact, I would never have started making music if it wasn't for discovering CSHR. Unfortunately, the feelings I felt when I first discovered him can never be replicated. I was 15, struggling with my sexuality, and heard the original TF (which will always be the better version due to my attachment to it). The lines in BLID about not wanting to go insane, introducing 'my brother' (boyfriend) to my parents and so much more just hit so hard as an angsty teen. The original Famous Prophets is way better too imo, coupled with Pain Star (from Disjecta Membra), which was always supposed to be the outro for Famous Prophets. Original Pain Star goes waaaaay harder in the 'climax' imo. Nervous Young Inhumans is another one that is just utter shite on the new version imo but the original bangs (tbh all the songs are better on original imo but I am extreeeemely biased). Thank you again for such an awesome reaction. Can't believe you acc had The Yellow Wallpaper on your book shelf too and you feel the way I do about that short story. It is INCREDIBLY powerful indeed. I always say it's the best short story I've ever read. It really stays with you. Now... About CSHR. The lore behind Will and Twin Fantasy in particular goes way too deep. I could write a disso on it and still not be close to fitting it all in (no joke). So I'm not even gonna try (in fact, digging into his past and shit is essentially what led to Will closing the old CSHR subreddit, of which I was an active member). But what I would like to do is recommend more of his music. Unfortunately for new fans, he released well over 100 songs before he even turned 20. So it took me years to listen to it all. But here are a few that I recommend. In terms of single tracks (in no particular order), 'The Hard Part', 'KS', 'When Will My Man Come?', 'Love Me Too Much', 'I CAN TALK WITH MY EYES SHUT' (some of these were written when he was practically a child, the talent is insane). In terms of albums, 'Nervous Young Man' (the opening track was originally written and recorded when he was ridiculously young like 13 or 14 when he was releasing music under another name and I want you to think about the fact a child wrote this song (it's called Boxing Day) when you listen to it because it is quite literally genius and Will is the definition of a wunderkind. The original Boxing Day he wrote and recorded as a 13 or 14 (okay maybe 15) year old is still online (or at least it was) so you can actually hear that he actually made no changes to the structure and lyrics and shit from then and when he recorded it for NYM so it, once again, just makes one wonder how a child could come up with such complex structures, innovative ideas/techniques and mature lyrics), 'How To Leave Town' and 'Monomania'. If you check out those 3 albums, you'll be well on your way. If you do a reaction to Nervous Young Man, I might die of joy though (and you'd probably be the first reactor to do so) so please don't as I want to live. The problem with Will is that his b-sides and rarities (some of which was before he went by CSHR) has some of his most genius, most beautiful and sincere tracks. So it's actually hard to give recommendations. There's gems throughout that you'll discover like years later and think 'Quite simply, how did this man (and child) write and record all of this music'. Also notably, he did everything (well 99% of everything) on all his songs until Teens of Style, when he brought on bandmates Ethan and Andrew (and later Seth on bass). The dude is a literal genius. Enjoy and thank you again for the great reaction. I wrote this comment for myself; if you read this far, I commend you. Edit: his output is crazy so it's inevtiable that I've missed out some really beautiful songs but I tried to include the rare ones because those are the ones that are hard to find and shit so hopefully that helps a bit
