Genetics of the Greeks: European or Middle Eastern?

Just who exactly are the Greeks and what is their genetic makeup? Today we will be discussing a brief history and genetics of the Greek people, one of the most influential groups of people, not only in the West, but nearly the entire world.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the history and genetics of the Greeks, without whom, our entire history and culture as we know it would look drastically different. Thanks for watching! Honestly, I did not think the video title was so controversial. Just trying to answer a commonly asked question!

@Georgios Chardavellas Exactly.. I'm blonde, green eyes, quite white...i'm a mixture of Greek, Bulgarian, Cypriot and Iranian. While there is that typical Greek look in many Greek men i see here, I would consider this more like a byproduct of centuries of ethnic mixing. Bulgarians are considered Slavs but by appearance they are more close to Greeks and Turks. Also I'd like to point out that the Middle East doesn't necessarily mean dark hair and brown eyes. Probably that was true 2000 years ago but not anymore. Also, i don't know where do you live in Greece but I was born in and raised in Athens and I'm pretty accustomed to how a typical Greek person looks like here but when I moved to study in Thessaloniki and after few months exploring the area, it was evident that the Greeks up there look nothing like the Greeks down here. Up there you see more light hair, more blue eyes, the face features are less chiseled. They look closer to Bulgarians and Turks. It's hard to explain it really but to me the difference is huge since I travel often around and outside Greece and I get to see a bigger picture of the puzzle.

Here at the Art Museum I was very amused to see an inscription bearing the name "Ptolemaios" (Ptolemy) written in Ancient Egyptian "Hieroglyphics". The Ptolemies ruled Egypt for 300 years, until Cleopatra and Marc Anthony, while having a bigger and stronger fleet than the ROmans, left the battlefield and lost Egypt to the Romans. The first Ptolemy was a good general of Alexander and was a good ruler, but at the end of the 300 years they taxed the Egyptian farmers too much and the once very wealthy country was not prospering.

I have ancient Levantine DNA 9 percent, Greek 21 percent, Caucasus 21 percent, Arabian 13 percent, North African Berber 11 percent, Central Asian 13 percent and finally European Ashkenazi 10 percent, layers and layers. I think most people in the area that don’t have a strong outside look (recent immigrants like the Bedouins) would have similar results. I think it’s fascinating. Greeks had a strong presence in our history but they weren’t the only ones.

This is why you will notice a lot of physical similarities between the Iranian and North Western Indian people, the further south and east you go into India the more the Aryan gene gets diluted. There are cultural similarities as well. Iran was called "Ērānsahr" in ancient times meaning "Land of the Aryans" while northern India was called "Āryāvarta" which also means "Land of the Aryans" establishing the cultural as well as genetic connection between the Indo-Aryans and Iranian peoples.

The way I see it is that during the early Middle Ages, the Greek Romans and the Iranian Sassanids could not come to terms of peace, but only temporarily, over and over. This failure to come to a permanent peace depopulated Anatolia and weakened both sides creating an immense power vacuum which was consequently filled by invading Muslim Arabic tribes from the south and later, Turkic and mostly Islamic tribes from the east. For ancient Iran and it’s Persian culture to be conquered and replaced by that of tribal, Arabic herdsmen had to have been it’s most humiliating defeat. Iran accepted Islam and found her freedom in but a few things such as poetry, a great outlet in exchange for her past freedoms and advanced civilization. For the two cultures to combine and for Persian society to accept Islam is probably, in my own opinion now, never really achievable. I don’t think the Iranian people will ever come to terms in surrendering their past advanced civilization to what they are following today. The Greek’s humiliating defeat by Turkic tribesmen was later, and a much slower, torturous defeat taking centuries, but was still much from the depopulation of Anatolia, it’s food, man power [military] and tax base. Two great ancient civilizations of art, science, and culture taken down by herdsmen, but not destroyed.

Turks and Greeks are kinda similar just the only exception is that the Greeks dont have Central Asian genetics. There is one thing that we’ve deliberately overlooked that the Greeks took most of their knowledge and even most of the Greek mythology from the ancient Egyptians, the Sumerians and the Phoenicians. Just look at the Alphabet, it wasn’t Greek, it was invented by the Phoenicians, so is the word Alphabet from Aramaic Aleph ( ox) and Bet ( home) . Our continent is called after Europa who wasn’t Greek but a Phoenician princess from the ancient city of Tyre ( in today’s Lebanon). There are historical work that show more than half of the European Mediterranean cities were founded by the Phoenicians not the Greeks or the Romans. Look at the origins of Pythagoras and Thales, they weren’t Greeks, they were Phoenicians. Check out the works of historians from MIT (S. Holst and others from Columbia about the ancient world. But History is written and manipulated by the VICTORS that’s why we ignore those great civilizations I mentioned and we limit our civilizations to the Greeks and Romans. So arrogant and ignorant !

True, they are European Mediterranean, however, I must say that Spaniards have quite a diferent genetic make up from that of Italian and Greeks, particularly the last ones. Europe can be devided in 3 main regions: Northern Europe (Nordic countries), Western Europe, and Eastern Europe. There could be a fourth group including the Finish and Baltic people, whose genetics are pretty different. Of course, many people cluster with several groups, like Italy, or Germany, etc.

@Dimitri Filipi in Quora you were admitting that at least South Greeks and Greek islanders (who make up the majority of Greeks) have more in common with "Latins" like Italians and Spaniards and less with Balkan people like Albanians. I have not listened to any Albanian or Balkan or oriental music which sounds like Sirtaki, in contrast to many Sounds from Italy which do sound like Sirtaki, or never saw any architecture in Balkans looking like anything in Peloponnese like Nafplio, Pylos Koroni, Galaxidi, Aegean islands etc in contrast to many parts of Italy which are nearly identical now not sure what you mean by "traditional clothing", cause no person in Greece walks in the street wearing "traditional clothing", but Greek clothing surely was always consisted of a white shirt and a black bollero, like in almost all South European countries, having nothing slavic about it, let alone middle eastern or arabian traditional clothing which has litterally nothing in common with Greek what exactly changed since you were admitting the reality, that most of Greece is like LATINS, NOT BALKANS? Which is the reality i am experiencing here as well. BTW in ALL sources Greece is associated with WESTERN EUROPE mostly, not with eastern Europe. We have nearly 2 continuous centuries in Western Europe, and another 3 during medieval times, all our indexes (education, gdp etc) are closer to WESTERN EUROPE. You talk about music, do Greek americans (who we in Greece call "haza amerikanakia") know about waltz tradition in Greece? I doubt if you know anything more about Greece than what you see in weddings, that's why have such an opinion about "Greek Americans". You say you are an Arvanite, both in Quora and here, you should know that Greece is not Arvanitic villages (a population which hardly makes up 3% of Greece). visit northern suburbs of Athens and you will see places that could have similarities not only with "Latins", but even with Germanic countries, but nothing in common with Balkans, and especially Albania which has zero innfluence from the West (at least countries like Serbia do have Western influence). How many places in Albania which look anything like Santorini, or Plaka in Athens, or the towns from South Greece i referred above could you suggest me? North Greece is a bit more Balkanic influenced, and because of the Anatolian refugees maybe more, but people know Greece for South, and even more for its islands, not for Balkan influenced places You can personally feel close to whoever you want, and see "your culture" in dances or music etc of whoever you want, but you have to respect that this doesn't apply for Greeks, and if you differ from Greeks from this aspect, then you obviously aren't Greek, even if you have some origins from there

The Greeks added vowels, adapted it to the phonology of the Greek language, simplified and standardized it - made it more ‘user friendly’, to use a modern idiom - and subsequently bequeathed it to the Romans (and hence to the rest of Europe - including the Cyrillic script for the Russians and most other Slavic peoples of Eastern Europe).

This is one of the nicest brief summarys about a nation's history and its expansion I have seen. Two points I wanted to hear before I watch the video and you referred to them as best as you could based on the video's short duration. A) The Greeks for the most part of the antiquity weren't united but they feel/knew that they share the same ancestry. Of course the common language is the first and most important element that shows this and then there is the common religious. These are the two most significants characteristics that point out a common ancestry for a group of people in the early times with written tradtion. However, the various panhellenic games, with the Olympic being the epitome of the mutual history of the different greek tribes, can show us how high they regarded their history, all these mythological epics that still we learn today. If we think how old the Olympic games and the Homeric poems are (8th century BC), the conclusion is that the Greek tribes even with their animosity towards one another felt as the same nation from really old times. Luckily, many archailogians have worked to this proof with all the findings in places like the Mycenes and the excavation of Troy, places that were the main sites of the Iliad and show to us the truth behind the myth, how old the hellenic nation is in the Greek peninsula and the west Asia Minor, so we can prevent any history revisionist with actual history facts from rewritting the history in this area. B) The second point I would like to refer is the islamization of a very big part of Greeks in Asia Minor. To analyze this we must take into accound some significants aspects of the Ottoman islamic society. Being a Christian ment that you are a second class citizen (citizen = subject). The courts would find guilty an innocent Christian for any crime if a Muslim was standing against him. They were heavily taxed for their religion, as in the islamic law a non Muslim subject must pay the Jizya in order to safely practise his faith. The first centuries of the Ottoman rule in the Balkans there were a tradition of taking a child of a Christian family and raized it with Muslim principles and tradition, so that when this kid comes to age join the army. Many Greek, Serbian, Bulgarians and other Christian kids were islamized and got to fight other Christians. They formed the Janissaries. All these made many families to convert to Islam as their life would be much easier and with no fear of kidnapping their child. And of course any former Christian that was converted to Islam would now considered a Turk as the religious aspect was then the main thing that distinguished the people in the Empire. So, too many Greeks (or Rhomioi - from Romans - as they were used to call themshelves back then) and other Christians would now be Turkish people. This also explains the huge population of Turkey today and the small one of the Balkan countries that were strong states in the mediaval times.

Slavs came to that place ( Balkan ) very very late.....6th century after Crist. So the confusion is that Slavic people are living now, in parts of the geographical area of Macedonia. They are Slavs. Not Macedonians even if they are living in small parts of the great Macedonia. Their language ( FYROM) is Bulgarian. Their nation is Slavic. Nothing to do with the Macedoneans.Macedonians were Greeks .Speaking Greek, having Greek names, Greek gods etc etc. That is why they were participating Olympic Games that were allowed to only for the Greek cities - states......

Its a very interesting question and extremely interesting response. To me as an outsider, born and raised in Austria, i look up to Greece as the origin of many philosophical and political ideas as well as the origin of our civilisation. So many things that were originally greek came through the romans and even directly from you to central europe. But its true and undeniable that there are heavy oriental influences in the modern greek culture. This however is in no way something bad, it makes your culture even more unique, rich and beautiful. Long story short to me Greeks are as european as it gets since "being european" doesn't just mean one thing, we are a diverse continent and thats in what lies our strength!

It tells a lot of past and future facts that can not be achieved by humans, especially at that time which was primitive in terms of modern technology and machinery Some of the verses in which addressed the Prophet (Pbuh) mention some of the things that Allah warned against him, and some of verses admonish him: “Do not say of anything, ‘I will do that tomorrow,’ without adding, ‘God willing’” (Quran, 18:23-24). Islam is the fastest growing religion right now. The number of convert to islam is increasing in major countries. Britain sees about 5,200 conversions a year. In America, nearly a quarter of Muslims are converts. A false religion basically will lose followers not gain them. [1] Muslims honor all prophets, and the belief in them is obligatory for every Muslim. Say, ‘We believe in God and in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and all the prophets by their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we devote ourselves to Him.’” (Quran, 2:136) Islam is based on the concept of justice in rewards and sanctions. No one was born sinner and noone is expected to go to hell or heaven. It all depends on your deeds in this worldly life. So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it. And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it. (99:7/8) The righteousness in islam is not defined by how many prayers you made or how days you fast but how you treat others. Abu Huraira reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, a woman prays in the night, fasts in the day, does many deeds and gives charity, yet she harms her neighbors with her tongue.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There is no good in her. She is among the people of Hellfire.” The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, another woman prays the obligatory prayers and gives bits of food in charity, yet she does not harm anyone.” The Prophet said, “She is among the people of Paradise.” Source: al-Adab al-Mufrad 117 Islam is compatible with human nature. It establishes an equilibrium between the body needs and soul demands. Seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; but do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters." [Surat Al Qasas:77].

Those Greeks who did mix with Muslims and converted to Islam moved to Turkey in the 1920's. We Orthodox Christians are not permitted by our religion to marry non Christians. Greeks are genetically closely related to Italians due to Greek colonization of Southern Italy in Ancient times and Venetian rule in the Middle Ages. I mean Im Albanian and i say as a joke Greeks are Ethiopians, just to piss them off and they call us Turks because after 500 years Turkish occupation many of our people converted to Islam. But the truth is that European culture is derived from the Greeks, without Greeks there would be no Europe as we know it. So in short Greeks are definitely Europeans, culturally and genetically. You African Americans should travel Europe because its a very diverse continent. We have Brown haired, brown eyed Orthodox Greeks to Blonde hair blue eyed Protestant Finns and Blonde Haired Bosnian Muslims to Black hair Catholic Spaniards etc ... Read the german thinker Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer (1790 - 1861). When western philhellenes like Byron visited Greece, they hoped to meet the grandsons of Socrates, but they met assimilated: Arvanites (Albanians), Aromanians, Slavs etc., who were counted as "Greeks" cause they adhered to greek orthodoxy and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. In the Balkan Wars of 1912-13, Greece conquered what is now "Greek Macedonia" and forcibly assimilated the local slavic Macedonians or Bulgarians, and in 1923, Greece was enriched with refugees from Asia Minor, also counted as "Greeks", though they were: Karamanlides (baptised Seljuks), Georgians, Armenians, christian Arabs etc. Greece denies the existence of other ethnicities in it's borders and persecutes them, but it is in fact a multiethnic conglomerate. This struggle was not grassroots, it was orchestrated from Greece by her ambassador in the Ottoman Empire, Mavrokordatos; her consul in Thess/niki, Koromilas; and his colleague in Monastiri, Dragoumis. None of them was from Macedonia. And most of the bulgarian fighters were born in Macedonia: Hadzhinikolov and Delchev (Kilkis), Batandzhiev (Goumenissa), Dimitrov (Ayvatovo near Salonica), Pop Traikov (Dambeni, Kastoria), Chakalarov (Smrdesh, Florina). Λατρεύω την Ελλάδα από την Κίνα🇬🇷💞🇨🇳 both as the origins of the European/ Eastern Asian culture, we are so historically identical and culturally intimate. From last September to Christmas I had been working in Athens for the first time in Europe, I truly feel like it’s my second home. I took the bus 550 every afternoon of December to see the gorgeous sunset off the Flisvos Marina, went partying all night long at Keramaikos and shopping like crazy at McArthur Glen on Black Friday, and walking down every little road downtown even in Santorini. Everything was perfect until a gang squeezed me hard and stole my wallet right in the metro train at Omonia, the most dangerous place I’ve ever been to... Anyway I still love Greek culture, scenery and history, and I also met so many nice local friends. 🥰 What an imperfect but impressive journey! Ευχάριστο Αθήνα, Σε αγαπώ 🏛💙

I’m greek and I moved to the US last year. I’ve never really contemplated about where we fall on the “race spectrum” because in Greece we just identify as “Greeks”. And also we find it kinda racist to divide people based on their skin color, but alas. Greeks come in many different shapes and colors, for example I’m on the pale side, with light brown hair and green eyes, while my husband is many shades darker than me, with thick coily black hair and brown eyes. Both greek. I’ve seen greek gingers (yeah, they exist). I’ve only started really wondering about my “race” after American paperwork started RELENTLESSLY asking me if I’m white or black or brown or latinx or whatever. And I’m asking, why are Americans so OBSESSED with race? (Maybe because they abolished slavery, like, yesterday I guess)

@lei rp No, Arvanites were not the dominant population in Greece, Arvanites constituted about 12% of the Greek populationby 1911, and after the unification of Greece that would drop tp 4%. But so what Arvanites were originally Albanised Greeks.

Modern Greeks are related to the ancient Greeks in many ways: 1. Genetic Continuity: Genetic studies have shown that modern Greeks share a significant amount of genetic heritage with the ancient Greeks. As mentioned earlier, a study published in Nature in 2017 found genetic continuity between modern and ancient Greeks over a span of 3,500 years. This suggests that there has been a degree of genetic continuity within the Greek population. 2. Cultural Continuity: The ancient Greeks established a rich and influential culture that has had a lasting impact on Western civilization. Many aspects of ancient Greek culture, such as language, literature, philosophy, art, and architecture, have been preserved and passed down through the generations. Modern Greeks still identify with this cultural heritage and continue to celebrate and promote it. 3. Language: The Greek language has evolved over time but has maintained a significant degree of continuity from ancient to modern times. Modern Greek, known as Demotic Greek or simply Greek, is a direct descendant of Ancient Greek. Although there have been changes in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, the core structure and roots of the language can be traced back to ancient times. The linguistic continuity is a strong indication of the cultural and historical connection between modern and ancient Greeks. 4. Regional Continuity: The geographic region of Greece has served as a continuous homeland for various populations throughout history. Despite the influx of different groups through migrations and invasions, there has been a degree of regional continuity. The people living in Greece today can trace their roots back to the ancient inhabitants of the region. Read books not turkish propaganda channels on Instagram!
