Welcome to Amity Tracks. This is a channel where we discuss a wide range of music related topics. The focus will be on music from the 1960’s through the 1990’s, but not exclusively. Classic rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, jazz, blues, folk, country, soul…all genres are fair game. From time to time we may dabble in other popular culture, such as film, history or sports. But music is primarily what we do here. The focus is on the music and the artists. We hope to encourage an open and dynamic community with fun and informative discussions not only in the videos, but also in the comments section. Please note that, while disagreement and discussion is welcome, no personal attacks or out of bounds comments will be tolerated. We want to be a part of the positive larger vinyl community and other like-minded, music focused communities.

I do enjoy Wind & Wuthering - I’ve been following them since 1975 (thanks to older brother). When Hackett left, they lost their soul. Check out One for the Vine (predominantly Banks) & Blood on the Rooftops (Hackett) again.

I interchange Wind and Trick. I adore both. Blood on the Rooftops is my favourite. Love Los Endos and Unquiet Slumbers suite. The union of the instruments was seamless and rich. Firth of Fifth follows closely for me. Hackett's Genesis Revisited video (2015) with the East of England Orchestra is a real treat and tribute to his era with them.

I really do love those too, but I grew up with post-Gabriel Genesis. (Actually, I've been listening to Selling England quite a bit recently.) Bought the Collins led albums all new when released starting with Trick in Jr. High, so those are more dear to me I guess.@@uckbee

Nice order
I think this is the first Genesis album ranking video I've seen where I can't agree with a single placement. Usually, there's at least a couple, but not here. Extraordinary. But hey, you found some rare photos, at least. Nice.
Great vid! My top four... 1) Foxtrot 2) Nursery Cryme 3) Trespass 4) Selling England By The Pound
I am so glad to see Abacab get some love...I think it is a great transition album between progressive and "pop"...

Agreed. It's #1 or 2 for me.
(In order of preference), we find ourselves: Selling Lamb whilst Foxtrotting in the Nursery (what a cryme!), Wutheringly, no Trick. And Then, along comes Duke, with Ab(b)a, in a cab, no less, but Shape(s)fully, not Invisibly, and they weren't Trespassing. No, one Can't Dance, but one'll be Calling for a Revelation!

Okay i’m stealing this idea! 😂
Wind And Wuthering is in my opinion Genesis’ progressive pinnacle.
My favourites: 1. A Trick of the Tale 2. Wind & Wuthering 3. Foxtrot 4. Selling England 5. And Then There Were Three 6. Nursery Crymes 7. Duke 8. Genesis 9. Invisible Touch 10. Lamb I either couldn't connect with the others with Peter (Genesis to Revelation & Trespass), or I had no taste for the rest, yet i loved most of Phil Collins' Catalogue over that latter period. As you can figure, Steve Hackett made the most impact musically on me on their records, and those first four picks, with number 6, highlighted immense musicality and imagination. I used to research the origins of the imagery used in those lyrics, the Bible, the mythology and folklore, along with 70s pop culture; hence why there was so resonance for me. My no 5 pick was because of how strong it was lyrically and musically. Although Hackett's versatility was sorely missing from this, Rutherford made a mighty and accomplished assay.❤

@@juancarloscalderonmiranda7259 nothing wrong with the Lamb. It just didn't resonate with me like the others.
I personally love Wind and Wuthering. My introduction to Genesis was via the brilliant Seconds Out live LP and I was actually a little disappointed when I started to listen to their studio recordings which lacked the aural punch of their live work. W&W however really came closest to their live sound and the production overall is just superb. Trick of the Tail and Foxtrot are the most consistent album in terms of composition. I do love Selling England By The Pound despite the bloated second side and Lamb Lies Down despite being a tough listen in some ways is so full of great music and also benefits from an excellent production. I am fond of Nursery Cryme but I still think the band were still finding their way on that one. I do agree with you about ABACAB- it's silly but fun and far more enjoyable than the other 80's albums in my opinion and surprisingly proggy in places.
Ive got to throw mine out there because I know it will cause a big stir. 1 Selling England 2 Trick of the Tail 3 Nursery Cryme 4 Foxtrot 5 Wind and Wuthering 6 Abacab 7 Duke 8 The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 9 Genesis 10....And Then There Were Three 11 Calling All Stations 12 Trespass 13 Invisible Touch 14 We Can't Dance 15 From Genesis to Revelations

Thanks!
I think the first album is the one that really ties them to the Canterbury scene. Then they break out away from the pack and pioneer prog rock with the best of the best.
That's a great rating. 'The Lamb' was my first Genesis album and still my favorite. There is something ethereal about it that can't really be defined. I love 'Foxtrot', 'Selling England' and 'Trick' too. I too have always had a lot of difficulty with 'Wind and Wuthering'. I perceived it as a drop off in quality after 'Trick'. Cheers.

Agreed, I love the Gabriel period and trick, ttwt, Duke and still enjoyed them in the 80s, but how can he rank w&w so low? For me w&w is my favorite, start to finish.
Daryl Struemer was on bass and guitar depending on the song. He was exclusively on lead guitar for all the material from 1970 til 1977, since Rutherford on stage never played the parts Ant Philips and Steve Hackett had created.
If you really want to trip out you should play Behind the Lines,Duchess,Guide Vocal,Turn it on again, Duke’s Travels then Duke’s End. Because that’s the sequence that they first wanted to do the first side before they abandoned the idea.
Thanks for the video! It’s hard for me to remember, but my first Genesis experience was radio - either the song Misunderstanding or Follow Me, Follow You. Just a quick approximate top 5: 1. Selling England By The Pound 2. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 3. Nursery Cryme 4. Trick Of The Tail 5. Duke Wind And Wuthering is basically the band splintering. Tony Banks started to assert his ideas over Hackett’s ideas. There is very little guitar on the album compared to previous releases and, ironically, less guitar than several albums following it. Another one I have a hard time with is Foxtrot. Sure, Supper’s Ready is great, but overall the melodies on an album like Nursery Cryme are far catchier, to me anyways.

Selling Nursery Foxtrot Wind Trick
I was introduced to Genesis during those 80s "pop" years. I say "pop" because they never fully abandoned prog. I worked backwards through the discography so I appreciate both eras. I don't listen to the debut or CAS so won't be including them here. 1. Foxtrot 2. Selling England 3. A Trick of the Tail 4. Nursery Cryme 5. Lamb 6. Wind & Wuthering 7. Duke 8. Trespass 9. And Then There Were Three 10. Invisible Touch 11. Genesis 12. Abacab 13. We Can't Dance I love all of these albums. For as long as I can remember The Beatles have been my favorite band but Genesis is always knocking on the door trying to take the top spot.
i’m finding some stark similarities in style between Gabriel’s Genesis stuff and his solo stuff especially his early solo.
Yeah, I can dig all that. But I can’t help it, I like “Burning Rope” better than “Domino.”😉
I don't think of these albums as the best of "progressive rock." I think of them as the best of rock, period.
My top 5 rank: 1-Foxtrot 2-Selling England 3-A Trick 4-W & W 5-The Lamb
Great list, I'm still fairly new to Genesis, I came into the band because I liked Phil Collins solo material, so even though I've liked them for a while it's really been these last couple of years that I really Dove into their discography. I still favor the Collins era but the Gabriel era is great as well. I'm not totally sure how id rank all the album's yet, but I was hoping to do my own video on it soon!
Great video, very informative and entertaining. I tend to prefer the Proggy stuff, but I actually prefer their last two studio albums to the three that precedent them. All those other three have some great songs on them but I prefer the last two if I'm aiming to listen to all or most of any album. 'The Dividing Line' filmed live on the 'Calling All Stations' tour in 1992 in Poland, and on KZread, is a corker imo. I saw their gig on that tour in Cardiff, Wales and I thought it was great. Ray Wilson was quite witty and engaging with the audience, and the sound was good. 👍

Con tutto il rispetto - it's your ranking, not mine -, Abacab, Invisible Touch (one of my three worst of their albums) and Genesis / Mama , cannot be inserted behind Wind , Trespass and And Then There too. Agree with you that Abacab is the best of the Pop era. Thank you for your rating.
👍 (Though I am fond of Trespass.)
I prefer the Nursery Cryme and the Wind and Wuthering album.
Hi, I really like your album ranking list and here’s mine!! 😁👍 1. “Abacab” (1981) 2. “Genesis” (1983) 3. “Duke” (1980) 4. “A Trick of the Tail” (1976) 5. “Selling England by the Pound” (1973) 6. “Foxtrot” (1972) 7. “Invisible Touch” (1986) 8. “Nursery Cryme” (1971) 9. “Wind and Wuthering” (1976) 10. “We Can’t Dance” (1991) 11. “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” (1974) 12. “…And Then There Were Three” (1978) 13. “Trespass” (1970) 14. “Calling All Stations” (1997) 15. “From Genesis to Revelation” (1969) Let me know what you think!! 😀👍

@@amitytracks I don’t have a problem with “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway”, I just have fond memories of albums such as “Invisible Touch” and “Abacab”. 😁👍
Can-Utility and the Coastliners is my favorite track. I get “Suppers Ready” is the epic on that album but it’s a bit too long for my taste. 1.Foxtrot 2. Selling England by the Pound 3. Nursery Cryme 4 The Lamb 5. Trespass All other album I kind of like quite a lot. I’ll get a ranking on those soon.
I think the best thing about The Carpet Crawlers is its ethereal intro.
The best album is : ……and then there are three 3️⃣ 😊
I love the "Shapes" Album a lot too!
1. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 2. Selling England By The Pound (the best album of pretty much 90-odd% of all other bands) 3: Trick of the Tail 4. Foxtrot 5. Wind And Wuthering 6. Abacab (I just prefer this to the non-Duke suite songs on Duke - if "Paperlate" is on here rather than "Whodunnit," this might go up to #5) 7. Duke (the Duke suite is sweet! The rest of it, not as much) 8. Invisible Touch (I must have listened to this 100's of times in 1986/7 when I was a freshman in high school) 9 Nursery Cryme 10. And Then They Were Three 11. From Genesis To Revelation (I much prefer the psychadelic folkiness of this to Trespass) 12. Trespass (I'm just not a huge fan of this) 13. Genesis (outside of the opening sounds of "Mama," I just don't like it) 14. Calling All Stations 15. We Can't Dance (because they should have known better - it's too long and it's too lame)
When you talk about genesis 1983, you don''t mention "it's gonna get better", which is the best song in this record.

This was a hard album to like initially as I'm not keen on the production and the live versions are great.....however it's a long term grower - the more I listen to it the more I love it.
go see The Musical Box if you have the chance.
Very interesting selection! Apart from Foxtrot being so high and Wind & Wuthering being so low, I'm with you much of the way (though I'd also have Then There Were Three) higher. Yes, I too cannot understand the criticism of Genesis and Abacab - there is so much good stuff on both of them. As for where I differ: Foxtrot - WHY?? I guess it's all because of Supper's Ready; I find Side 1 is surpassed by at least 50% of everything else they did. Wind & Wuthering - Side 1 is class prog but you might agree that they've done better on some other albums. But Side 2, from Blood On The Rooftops to Afterglow, is one of the strongest sides in their entire catalogue, in my opinion.

Every song of Foxtrot is classic masterpiece, apart maybe for "Time table" which is "only" a very good song 😉
Nice Genesis ranking video (Duke too low). Re: Abacab - Originally the terrific track "You Might Recall" was slated to be on the Abacab album but a last minute decision (to pacify Collins) was made to switch it out for "Who Dunnit?" much to the dismay of Banks who lost that battle. Can you imagine Abacab with "You Might Recall" on it instead of the horrible "Who Dunnit"? Thankfully "You Might Recall" appeared on side four of Three Sides Live, but still...
