There’s nothing better than seeing newer Genesis play the music they actually wanted to play. Like all Prog bands in the 80’s they were forced into the Pop genre, but it’s great seeing beautiful pieces like this shine through

True story: back in the 80s my friend said he was playing this track loud in his room. One of his friends stopped by as it was playing the dodo sound keyboard. His friend said "what the hell's that? Sounds like a dodo bird." Not that any of us know what an extinct bird sounds like, but he just said it, imagining what a dodo might sound like. So cool!

@@squonk86 WOW! 75X!!! I'm very jealous! I've only been to 4 performances but have watched so very many here on YT. My 1st was the Mama/Genesis Tour, in late 80s. I don't remember Phil changing lyric to 'Fk up your life' on the Invisible Touch Tour I attended in Boston early 90s. Each concert after that he did. Hubby always gave me a nudge - but hubby's still here, 34+ years later, lol. Phil always cracks me up, as all his other funny remarks & antics at concerts. At latest The Last Domino concert I attended, for the intro to Land of Confusion, Phil referenced how the song STILL relates to current events Among his comments, rolling his eyes in disgust, Phil said; 'look at fkn Putin. Trying to start WW3. That little fk'. 👏 👏👏 WTG Phil! Tells it as he sees it. I'm back to watch more concerts. "The Cage Old Melody" performance in Hanover Germany is really awesome. The Knebworth concerts are amazing too. Enjoy my fellow Genesis junkie. Phil says we (Genesis fans) are our own religious group. AMEN, Phil 🙏 lol

Lyrics to this Iconic hit; 💥 Too big to fly, Dodo ugly so dodo must die. Dog go, with fear on its side; Can't change, can't change the tide. Dog baiter, agitator, Asking questions, says he wants to know why. Ain't no reason that money can't buy. Mink, he pretty, so mink he must die, Must die, must die. Sun, he giving life in his light, Part of the system. Friend to man and friend to the trees, No friend to the snowman. Where does he go? What does he do? Does he meet with the mole, the stream, the cloud, And end up at the bottom of the sea? Fish, he got a hook in his throat, Fish, he got problems. Where does he go? What does he do? Does he hope he's too small, to poor a haul, Who'll end up bein' thrown back in the sea? I'm back in the sea. Caretaker, horror movie, Only one eye, only needs one boot. Sweet lady, she know she looks good. Vacuum coming for the bright and the brute. Big noise, black smoke, So pig-headed, couldn't see the joke. But it ain't funny, ask the fly on the wall. It's only living, it don't matter at all, At all, at all. Pimp, he make you drool and grunt, He got an answer. One, he got a dream of love Deep as the ocean. Where does he go? What does he do? Will the siren team with Davy Jones And trap him at the bottom of the sea? I'm back in the sea. I'm back in the sea. I'm back in the sea.

Genesis never lost their touch when it came to writing songs that were quirky and mysterious. Such as the looming air of dark mystery at the beginning, before it settles down to a good solid groove. It's a damn good song 😎👍 Made even better still on Three Sides Live where it slides effortlessly into "Abacab": hold the final chord, four clicks on the drum stick, whack the china cymbal, then "Abacab". Magical 🥰🥰❤️❤️🔊🔊🔊🥁🥁

Agreed and that's the comment I made as well except I just said I love this song live where Phil puts his own spin on it which he does really in every song they did in concert..👍

Live he sings “Yow, Yow.” It’s a riff on 70s-era funk. “Friend to man, friend to the trees, no friend to the snowman, yow, yow.”

Meanwhile lurking by a stone in the mud Two eyes looked to see what I was and Then something spoke and this is what It said to me....... Clothes of brass and hair of brown Seldom need to breathe Don't need no wings to fly Ooh and a heart of stone And a fear of fire and water Who am I? The Fugitive (Tony finally does all his own vocals), Smallcreep's Day (Mike's first and best), Face Value (Phil's first and best), Spectral Mornings (Steve's first with all his own vocals and most cohesive), Peter Gabriel 3 (Even has Phil on drums) and The Geese and the Ghost (Ant's best).

Or taking old long series (20+ minutes) cut them in parts, arrange and thus create potential short songs… Duke could have been a Super’s Ready kinda album.

I understand that Abacab isn't as adventurous as Foxtrott or Selling England, but I can imagine how fresh and modern it has sounded in the early 80's. Fans of their 70's outputs surely liked at least this song a little. Even the most pop oriented albums had one song that reminds us that they are a prog rock band like this one.

As someone who vastly prefers the Gabriel era, If there's one flaw I think Abacab has as an album, it's that it *is* adventurous and expirementel, and some of the experiments don't land. Anyway Dodo/Lurker is a fantastic song

“Black smoke.” The way “smoke” is pronounced sounds like two syllables. Peter Schilling does this as well in “Major Tom (Coming Home).”
