I was driving my car with my 16 year old daughter. She asked me to put on a song. I told her that she probably wouldn't like it. I remembered this song and put it on. She just melted. I saw that she understood that it was something else. Special !

It’s almost inexplicable: EVERYONE likes Back in NYC - I’ve had the same experience with multiple people who don’t know Genesis
50 years old and still as fresh as 1974... I turned 14 in '74 and bought this when it hit the record shops. Now I'm just about 64 now
Still Epic in 2024...

Why wouldn’t it be? All years of your life this song should be epic still. Period
This is Genesis. The band out of this world
14 year old me absolutely needed to hear Peter Gabriel shouting “I’m not full of shit!” at that exact moment in my life…
Genius concept album of all time

I've seen people change their designation from other perfect choices. It has everything. I think the first time I heard this was after ABACAB. The pop stuff didn't do it for me. So, I'm actually becoming more of a Genesis fan now, decades later, than I would ever have been, it's actually one of those old age wisdom things that's so nice.... Someone needs to guide me through Supper's because I'm not getting it yet. I've listened to Lamb more than all the rest of all of their work combined.

Juntos com Emerson Lake & Palmer todas vão deixar o DNA para Eternidade Supertramp , nunca mais teremos bandas nesse nível. Atualmente só merdas comerciais 😡😡😉🤮
The bass line and The drums are sick. I admit I Love everything in this music.
I have been listening to Genesis for 47 years. I love the early years with Gabriel & Hackett. Whenever I listen to Genesis, so too do my neighbors. .

The second side of this record is truly Genesis’ artistic peak. And this song? The main motif along with the breakdown-style chorus, so powerful and driven.

Drumming can be very hard for us noobs to appreciate, let alone express why we DO. His work often FELT like there were two drummers. His physical look and the intensity that he played with were a perfect match. Especially for me, on this album, you can hear his song, just as if he was standing in front of the mic. When you consider people who were supposedly "born" to do what they do, these guys are that card. You can't be that good at much of anything in your early 20's. I didn't have time for all that instrument study nonsense when I was their age, I was going to a concert every weekend!
My favorite off this album. But the whole albums great!

The most impassioned performance on the LP.
My God, what a song. What. A. Song.
This has to be my favorite Genesis song, i love all the classics of the Gabriel era but this is the song for me, hard rocking and straight to the point (compared to other prog bands), yet full of little details and arrangements. Also the lyrics are beautiful.
One of the best demonstrations of 7/4 in the history of rock music. So well syncopated with utmost taste! I saw The Lamb live in Baltimore 12/1/74 at the Lyric Theater and the band blew me away with their energy and stellar musicianship. One of the best concerts I have ever attended.
An amazing heavy vocal and one of the highlight tracks on this epic album. What a way to kick off the second side. The smooth transition into Hairless Heart is perfect.
Top 10 Best Rock Albums ever! Still Critically acclaimed after all these years, Never rightfully got the full recognition that they & the Lamb deserves!
My high school photography teacher played only this double album on a reel to reel in the dark room. Back in NYC really stuck in my mind as a 16 year old and made me a Genesis fan. Nice to see it has the same impact now.
We made it, one of the best Genesis songs. I love this song. Such a beautifully heavy song and Peter Gabriel at his best as a vocalist and Lyricist

This song is so amazingly good!
Here are the AMAZING LYRICS of this song (for those who wish to sing along) I see faces and traces of home Back in New York City So you think I'm a tough kid, is that what you heard? Well, I like to see some action and it gets into my blood They call me the trail blazer, Rael electric razor I'm the pitcher in the chain gang, we don't believe in pain 'Cos we're only as strong Yes we're only as strong As the weakest link in the chain Let me out of Pontiac when I was just seventeen I had to get it out of me If you know what I mean, what I mean You say, I must be crazy, 'cos I don't care who I hit, who I hit But I know it's me that's hitting out, and I'm, I'm not full of shit I don't care who I hurt, I don't care who I do wrong This is your mess, I'm stuck in, I really don't belong When I take out my bottle filled up high with gasoline You can tell by the night fires Where Rael has been, has been As I cuddled the porcupine He said, I had none to blame, but me Held my heart, deep in hair Time to shave, shave it off, it off No time for romantic escape When your fluffy heart is ready for rape, no No time for romantic escape When your fluffy heart is ready for rape, no No time for romantic escape When your fluffy heart is ready for rape, no Off we go, off we go, off we go, off we go You're sitting in your comfort, you don't believe I'm real You cannot buy protection from the way that I feel Your progressive hypocrites hand out their trash But it was mine in the first place, so I'll burn it to ash And I've tasted all the strongest meats And laid them down on colored sheets Laid them down on colored sheets Who needs illusion of love and affection When you're out walking in the streets With your mainline connection, connection As I cuddle the porcupine He said, I had none to blame, but me Held my heart, deep in hair Time to shave, shave it off, it off No time for romantic escape When your fluffy heart is ready for rape, no No time for romantic escape When your fluffy heart is ready for rape, no No time for romantic escape When your fluffy heart is ready for rape No time

I can’t remember what I went into the kitchen for yet I can sing every word from every Genesis tune.
So refreshing listening to Phil's drumming. Not textbook at all, because textbook sucks. The way he changes from dragging to super tight, how and where he hits and those grooving ghost notes and embellishments: unique but always serving the music.
Please never forget Tony Banks🎹🎼❤️🔥❤️
There are many live versions of "Back In NYC", which are amazing in their own right, but for me, this is the definitive version! This thing just absolutely rips! Perhaps I like it so much because it is "the one I heard when I was 15". But it is also the one single song that taught me to play drums in 7/4 time. No matter what 7/4 tune I am playing, in my head I hear Tony Banks' hypnotic riff...
This song is amazing
Das " Lamb" Album ist der wie ich finde, helige Gral der progressiven Rockmusik! Ein absoluter Meilenstein. .....
The way Phil opens up with the cymbals and doubles up on the bass drum at just the right time. The way Peter swaggers up and down the sections of the song, then goes nerdy. The way the rest of the band animates the whole experience. Exquisite.
Love this enrire album, but The Lamia and The Chamber Of 32 Doors are my faves.

The Greatest of the Greats!👍👍👍🙏
it's been a long time since I've listened to this album. beautiful.
that synthesizer riff when i first heard it in 1974 was something else-
I was 19 when i heard this album for the first time. On 10 hits of crystal LSD and a handful of cubensis. My bestfriend had this record on Vinyl at the time and he randomly put it on. I didn't know what i was listening to so i layed down on my back on the floor and closed my eyes. We listened to the entire album all the way through. Im not kidding you when i say my life was changed by the end of it. What a journey that was! I am almost 30 now and still get flashbacks. This album will always be held very close to my heart.❤

One could imagine the Talking Heads getting the inspiration for their distinctive sound from the background "motif" of this song. My mind, at least, went straight to them from the very first seconds of "Back in N.Y.C."
I pulled up this song today, all because my screensaver opened to an aerial view of Manhattan - so of course my brain said "I see faces and traces of home...Back in NYC!"
Love you PG❤️

Songs like this one, you don't really "hear" unless you play them back on a really good fidelity stereo, LOTS of wattage, and a good audio source, not a MP2 file or a web link.
This one might’ve been written to either compete with or as a little reference to The Who, who had released Quadrophenia a year earlier than Genesis released this album. I can’t be sure about this, but i definitely get the same feeling from this as i do from that album.
Please play The Lamia in the last domino tour!!!!
I'm currently listening to this on a crap device with headphones it really needs to be listened to from good speakers and a decent audio system
