Well said sir! If the brands don’t want to sell to the independents. We will make our own parts or use heigh quality aftermarket. We won’t go down without a fight!

I could not have started repairing and servicing watches without your videos, so thank you. I fully agree about becoming your own inspector and testing generic parts. Several times I have held back from fitting a generic part having compared it under the microscope with an original part. Ratchet wheels not having square holes comes to mind. Other times not because of inadequate fit or function but because of surface texture not being as pleasing as the original and wanting to preserve original appearance as much as possible. For example a driving wheel for a ratchet wheel. I do not have a hardness tester so your caution about springs and balance staffs makes a lot of sense. Again, thank you, Kalle.

They should sell watch parts to Independence like you said there's not enough watchmakers to service all the watches that need servicing out there just take a screw for example it may cost them five cents to make they're not going to sell it for 10 dollars for 100 the same with all their other parts you're not going to buy just one they will still make money are the five dollars for shipping and handling a little bit goes to shipping more money goes to for the handling in their pocket

Like you said, generic parts are common in the auto repair industry. As long as there is disclosure then I feel comfortable with quality generic parts.

Some very good points you mentioned here. Seems inconsistency of quality from a parts producer is a big factor. The swiss are inadvertently giving other nations the opportunity to improve their own technical capabilities by creating a market for parts that they refuse to supply.

We refer to these generic parts in the automobile word as aftermarket where as the manufacturers parts are called OEM which stands for Original equipment manufacturer.

Another fine appraisal of the situation Kalle. And what timing... with the news from Cousins today. There's still (some) hope for wider distribution of original parts. We'll see.

The old manufacturer of Rolex parts make now "generic" parts from the same original machines. Also many wholesalers have big stocks of original parts. Never had any problems finding them. Only problem is the price.

I have just had to buy some parts from china because I just couldn't find any available anywhere else? Totally agree with what you have said. If needs must, to save a watch , get parts from wherever you can if they are rare and not made anymore.

Hello Kalle, the situation with watch parts is quite ridiculous really,as you said, the swiss manufacturers, they are the ones causing the generic/after market parts to be more readily available. Why i say this,is because im in the process of refurbishing a very badly rusted and damaged Sicura divers with an EB 8800 movement. Im after a new bezel and tension ring,a main spring,a plexi, and a clutch wheel. After 2 days of waiting, i was told my local company had to ring their other office in another part of the same country only to be told....."sorry your parts are unavailable"....come on, a plexi unavailable🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️or is it just laziness???😢 So, i have to resort to ebay and looking for a donor movement. It seems nobody wants to sell watch parts anymore. Im following your current blogs as i have your previous one on the "greed" of the major watch companies and their monopoly!!! Thankyou for your insight, it matches the every day situation....for me at least. Keep up the blogs and watchmaking videos..i love then. Best wishes to you and the team at Chronoglide. Mike

The manufacturers couldn’t make it clearer. When you buy a £500 - £50000 watch from them, they have you over a barrel. As the time comes for a service, you must go to them and pay whatever price they quote. They know your options are limited. They complain about generic parts but they created the aftermarket.

Kalle, for me as long as the quality and tolerances are good to high does it really matter? I have a Seiko SLA065J1 and a Tudor BB 58 in 925 silver the Seiko has a Grand Seiko movement that did not meet the tolerances for GS hence it was put into a higher end Seiko Diver. The Tudor a new inhouse movement by Kennisie. Which would you keep and which would you sell based on the movement specs? Thank you Chris

Thank you for that stream Kalle! Question from me would be: if generic part can be of good or bad quality, is it assured that a original part coming in „original branded“ package is of good quality? Thank you.

my FAVOURITE is when i opened my 3 year old and hardly worn and just stopped working, (hold your breath and bite your tongue!) my Tissot Powermatic 80 Chronomtre only a. to have the balance wheel fall out (damned plastic 'high tech' escapement. now i gotta swap in a grade 3 maybe 5 2824)and I saw "TISSOT HONG KONG" stamped on iunside of case back. yep. Tissot sourcing cases from china......wonder why all of the chinese homage brands have become so good of late...? maybe b/c they make the swiss their cases and have learned? I think so.....

By refusing access to genuine/quality parts, the Swatch Group are sending people to the generic market and therefore could be damaging the watches they are seeking to protect.

actually Swatch Group has a bigger motive to have people not able to repair their timepieces, so that they can offer them a much more expensive "new" replacement instead... not so far from what Apple is doing in the last 7-8 years (goes again around the "right to repair" topic - not only in the watchmaking industry.. and it is absolutely criminal what those huge corporations are doing)

The ultimate "Swiss" quality producer of watch tools use outsourced foreign parts and machining apparently, so why still the premium on price when they are halving their outlay?. It's good business for sure when profits are your main goal, but the sale of the "brand" is all you are purchasing, not necessarily quality. As you rightly say the industry is run by marketting execs, and not engineers or manufacturers of products.
