Generator shed

I forgot to mention that my shed is from Costco that I got three years ago. I was using it for my BBQ supplies but decided to use it for the shed so that’s why I chose it. The brand is called Lifetime I think I paid $250 at the time because it was on sale.

Nice set up. But for safety reasons , your generator should be at least 25 feet from your home.

Hey I’m curious if you have had to use this setup enough to know how long your 100lb tank last if you ran it nonstop. Thanks

No, I have not had to use it yet for a long period of time. I’m a little curious to how long it will last tho

Have no idea where you live but got a question about your propane tank. Do you leave it in the hot summer day sun? Maybe where you have it doesn’t expose it to many hours of direct sun but I assume you know sun can get the metal tank much hotter than the ambient temperature. It is extremely dangerous for tank to reach an internal temperature of 120 degrees. It’s too bad you didn’t provide a link to where you purchased the shed after all it’s the entire reason you made the video!!!

Every propane tank has a mandatory pressure release valve installed to take care of pressure that builds up when temperatures exceed 120deg. Beside yes it gets hot in North Houston area but I’m still able to to place my hand on the tank for a good amount of time. In my description I mentioned I bought the shed over 2 years ago from Costco, so there is no link I can post because they don’t sell that particular shed anymore

That looks like a 100lb propane tank?? If it is you might start to have trouble with fuel delivery in cooler temps. It depends on how much propane is in the tank and ambient temp. I think your generator will use about 130,000 btu/hr at full load. Look up vaporization rate for 100lb propane cylinders. I went through this a couple years ago. My winters routinely get down to zero. I wanted to run mine off of two 400 pounders and found out that was borderline, hooked it to the house tank instead. One solution might be to place the tank in front of the air outlet of the building. It would be worth your time to dig into it i think.

Thanks! I’ll look into it for sure. It’ll get down into the 30’s here, so, not near as cold where you are. Maybe I could wrap the tank during winter with some type of insulation and also wrap the hose…. Something to think about, so thanks for the heads up

@@craigbaker9270 most of the cold comes from the propane evaporating inside the tank, insulating it might make it worse. No matter the size of the tank you rely on the environment or some external source of heat to warm it up. A bigger tank is better because there is more surface area to absorb heat. I would just move it to the other side where the hot air comes out of the building, it can't be much over 130F which will be fine. Next time there's a long outage you'll have more friends than you ever wanted.

How hot is the inside of the shed getting when you run the Gen for an hour? I have a similar build with a Generac 17500 gen set multiple fans like 3000 plus CFM with a house fan like you have but that thing can still get 130 inside. Just note one of my attic fans shut off at 130 degrees internal temp.

My temp is about the same unfortunately. Between 120-130 degrees and that’s on a 100deg day too.
