Generative Patching 4.1: Intro to Mutable Instruments' Marbles

Музыка

This is the first of a set of four movies I created for Learning Modular Patrons on using the Mutable Instruments Marbles in generative patches, as part of a larger series I am writing on the subject. The first post including this movie are free for everyone to view; the other three posts and movies are for +5v level Patrons and above. That first free post is at / 50069929 ; you can subscribe to the Learning Modular Patreon channel at / learningmodular

    Such an incredible module. I pair Marbles with Rings and Beads for an incredible variety of sound design. Plus I love the toys that ship with each Mutable Instruments module.

    This module was so hard for me to grok by reading the directions. By the end this video it made perfect sense. Thank you!

    Omg! I came across this as I begin my journey into modular synths, and see Chris Meyer and thought... That's interesting because that's the same name as the guy who was part of my "Chris and Trish" intro to After Effects so many years ago. What are the chances? 😂

    I'm pretty sure it was a Mutable Instruments Rings (the pluck) and a Qu-Bit Surface (the more metallic, almost electric piano strike).

  • @Noyy

    No. Marbles only outputs CVs and trigger signals. You pass those CVs and signals to other modules to control other them. e.g. you can connect X3 to an oscillator to random the pitch/frequency.

    It took me almost a week of concentrated patching to learn it (usually I can figure out a module in a day or even an hour). But it was worth it. I also stayed away from the more advanced or "hidden" features, and focus on it as a source of triggers and controllable random modulation voltages.

  • @Jazzmaster58

    I´m sorry to point it out but when you're trying to show the bias button effect (around minute 1.50) you don't get what you're saying, when you turn the knobs to the left, T3 keeps lighting up and it shouldn't, and when you turn it right, the same, you shouldn't get T1 at all. I was trying to figure why is it acting like that but I couldn't find it. I use it a lot though, it's an amazing module.

    can you help this noob here understand - what have you plugged in exactly to T & X jacks? I think this is the thing - even this clearly great tutorial doesn't show all the signal path used. I keep guessing, but not matter what I tweak I just end up with one single note on repeat! :)

  • @LearningModular

    @LearningModular

    The T outputs are triggers. The X outputs are the random voltages, that change at the same time as the matching trigger outputs. If you're getting just a single note on repeat, make sure that the Spread and Length controls are not full CCW. The video above demonstrates Spread (plus Bias;, they interact). The other videos in the series (for Patreon subscribers) show some applications for the T and X outputs.

    @@LearningModular yes what (and I admit a lot of this is due to overwhelm) find hard to recall is - if I want to play my plaits rings and disting ex - or just the disting in multisample mode (yes I got over excited 😫😂) is it just then a case of T in gates X into cv? Dumb I know but I get v confused and hyper focus myself into stress like any good old fashioned adhd sort. If your patreon can show me how to modular in a way my head can process sign me up already!!
