TIME STAMPS
00:00 Introduction
00:36 How to get Photoshop Beta
00:53 How to use Generative Fill
Generative Fill uses Adobe Sensei AI to generate new image data based on your image selection and a text prompt describing what you would like to see.
You get returned 3 options for AI generated overlays that, for the most part, fit nicely into your image. From there you can generate more options or integrate the suggestion into your final image.
You can now access Generate Fill via the Photoshop Beta.

To me these kind of things are the end of fun. I hope people in the future will be taught about how stuff like this was done in the past, so the skillset a graphic designer used to have is still appreciated in the future.

No, it won't happen. Everyone wants easy mode. Your job will be replaced by AI. Most, if not all, vfx jobs will be replaced by AI.

Not only will there not be appreciation for the skill set, there will be contempt. Some of my recent works, I was asked what AI I used to create them. When I noted it was manual photomanupulation and digital painting I was immediately asked why I didn't just use AI?

Technology has automated creative / skilled jobs for centuries and it's unlikely that this ongoing change will ever stop. Not many people hire skilled carpenters any more to make their furniture, most things we have in our homes, our cars have been created by machines, with AI integrated into most aspects of our lives. I've grown up in a pre-computer world so I still appreciate 'manual' life, but I am not sure that sentiment will persist throughout the generations... and we're only at the beginning of what AI will be capable of doing.

I am shocked by the number of people who loves this! This is not only the end of any creative work which requires skills, it is the end of professional photographers!! Nobody will pay for something a computer will create in seconds. The moral side of this is devilish because all these changes are lies! The pictures do not show reality. Nobody can believe anything since this tool and ChatGPT. The consequencies of these two inventions are unimaginably dangerous.

Photo editing and manipulation has been happening for well over a century now. Photoshop was introduced in the 80s. I think it's naïve to take any photo for 'reality' these days - whether it was taken by a professional photographer or created by an artist. There are challenges with all new technologies and AI is just the newest disruptor - and there will be many other ones afterwards. People just seem shocked by how quickly this one's been taking off.

Image generation AI is just at the beginning of what it can do and there's still obvious flaws. But even with my test there were a lot of results that I actually thought looked pretty convincing :) Depends on your use case though

Moving from the US to Ireland means I did shut down my business. And just in time! Now that AI tools like Generative Fill, RunwayML, and Wonder Dynamics (not to mention the new generation of robot cameras which came out during COVID) have reduced the skill sets I spent decades developing into one click processes requiring zero actual skill the destruction of the freelance graphics/video industries can accelerate even quicker. The advent of better/cheaper lights and cameras, faster/cheaper computers, and excellent cheap/free editing software reducing barriers to entry was already a mixed bag. I've watched them change the industry since the 1990's. Setting up a broadcast quality multicam live rig a couple decades ago could easily cost over $200,000. Ten years ago, $20,000. Today, under $5k. More people can absolutely get into the game and compete against each other for the same number of gigs. Supply and demand rules then kick in. Certainly by 2019 I could charge less than half of what I could charge in 2005 for the same job as I was now competing with a much larger pool of providers (who really undercut prices in So-Cal). Non-union camera work went from a $50/hour gig to minimum wage, and the aforementioned robotic cameras killed even that. I know a lot of ex-cameramen who lost their jobs, unless they invested in a suite of robot cameras and Atem Switchers and moved to the TD position - and why wouldn't they? Cost of four cameras and a switcher package is now the cost of one weekend's pay for a four person crew ten years ago. Charge half the old rate with 1/4 of the crew and the one-man-band makes a bit more money. Generative AI tools? Hey, I personally have lost gigs. I have a friend at a major game studio forced by corporate to can 50 members of the art team (replaced by one intern and Midjourney), and Blizzard software announced this week they'd finished training an AI tool on all Blizzard's concept art, and that they're about to reduce the "redundant" employees (the art teams). It won't kill all the jobs. Only 75%. That's fine. Broadway and film orchestras lost half their jobs in the 1980's when synths and samplers became a thing. In Hollywood, the VFX guys are the last non-union part of the chain and the current WGA strike with support from DGA, IASTE and SAG is VFX's best and LAST chance to unionize before the AI starts taking away their jobs. Generative AI is a great aid for unskilled persons to visualize things they couldn't create, and yes, it's a great aid for skilled artists as well (although my own extensive experiments bore me). Yes, it takes longer for ME to "do the thing," but I ENJOYING doing the thing and take PRIDE in doing the thing and have no emotional connection to the AI created thing, except I understand that should I choose to try and rebuild my business I'll have to use the AI tools to stay competitive in a market where the explosion of content and explosion of users not-actually-creating the content are going to drive the pay levels for the content down. So, I will not return to being a full-time professional video/photo/graphics guy. I will remain a hobbyist and become a dinosaur as I persist in sticking with manual tools where I feel I have direct control over what is created, have fun in figuring out how to create, and a sense of pride when I get it right. As I continue to age through my 50s I'll embrace the obsolescence of my skills and knowledge which I knew would come, but thought would take another decade. I will leave the AI tools to the younger, hungrier generation who will not know (or care about) what was lost. I'll also need to shoot over an email and check in on my mentor - a 20+ year broadcast TD for major networks who left the studio system to produce freelance video event work where we did multimillion dollar productions, who chose not to replace his mighty tricasters with ATEM'S and his 1080p PL mount broadcast cams with EF mount Blackmagic Studio cams, and, instead, sold off his entire business and is now working as a contract carpenter - and literally increased his income by driving his van to people's houses and using a saw and hammer. See if he's still happy about the change in career. The biggest boost of GENERATIVE FILL in Photoshop will be to Adobe. Since the tool requires an Adobe Stock subscription to use (ie-access the training data), Adobe is about to up sell a lot of people into spending another thousand a year just before their income potential drops. All the generative services charging subs will do well as will the companies charging cloud rental for high end GPUs. But, hey, helping my wife run her pub might be fun. Pouring drinks and washing glasses is a no-brainer, but I can't be undercut by someone offering to do the same task at half the rate because bar work is only minimum wage anyway. Still, I hope the world gets off its ass and works on Universal Basic Income, because once AI moves into programming, financial services, and basically any task which doesn't absolutely require human hands on them (until advances in AI start improving the robotics which have only slowly advanced over the last few decades) the global disruption to all economies will be unprecedented ("fortunately," the right wing elements in the US government are about to kick off a global economic crisis to "own the libs" to get that started). Yup! Here's the punchline - AI turned me from a capitalist to a socialist!

Sorry to hear it's been such a rough journey for you Mike! Technology is a rollercoaster and it'll continue to be. I'm curious to know how ChatGPT develops as I'm in the IT industry and that's the most likely disruptor - it can already (partially) write better code than a lot of us 😬 I think I'm lucky in that KZread / VFX / Film Making has only ever been a hobby for me so far. I hope you're doing well besides everything going to the robots these days!

All this ai bullsh*t is just a big nope. It needs to be burned down in hell imho. All creative jobs coming to an end with ai. Eventually, everything else too.

AI has been around since the 50's and is already in pretty much everything we use day to day - and it's not going to go away. There's lots of challenges around the impact it has on existing jobs (due to automating what can be automated) as well as the ethics and legalities around how some of these models have been trained, but the technology in the 'creative' space for AI is only just at the beginning.
