Dancing With My Wealth
If you follow no other link in this description, you have to check out this one! This is the VERY RAW demo for the earliest incarnation of Dancing With Myself (from the aborted Sweet Revenge album sessions), which Bob Andrews snarkily entitled, Dancing With My Wealth. Quite far from the Billy Idol hit you know and love, It sounds like Devo covering the B-52s. Yeah, it's that good!
• Generation X - Dancing...
Your Generation
Here's a blistering live version of Your Generation on Marc Bolan's show back in 1977. This is a great snapshot of the young Generation X filled with hopeful enthusiasm and childish swagger. And that florid introduction from Marc is just delightful.
• Idol/Gen x - Your gene...
Your Generation
Here's another live version of the song, this time on the show Impact. I've got this clip cued up to Gen X, but you can check out great performances by The Damned, The Adverts and The Rich Kids just by hopping around...
• Impact TV Show The Dam...
Wild Youth
Here are the boys doing their leather-clad thing on Top Of The Pops. For lip syncing on a nationally televised show, Billy couldn't even be bothered to spit out his gum. When Tony's bass strap comes undone, he just says fuck it, and pumps the bass in the air. Punk...ROCK!
• Video
Ready Steady Go
A more subdued performance from Generation X on this Top Of The Pops "performance," and it's easy to see why. What's the benefit of having a band do one and a half minutes of their song? Who's that helping? Anyway, the boys look good as always...
• Video
Kiss Me Deadly
Great fan video using footage from the punk documentary D.O.A.
• Generation X - Kiss Me...
King Rocker
This Top Of The Pops performance sees the boys promoting their first single off Valley of the Dolls, and DAMN does Billy's hair look good! The rest of the band really has a glam aesthetic here, looking like they raided Hanoi Rocks' dressing room. Rock rock rock...
• Generation X-King rocker
Valley Of The Dolls
Here's the band promoting their 1979 album on Top Of The Pops. If the band members themselves weren't ready for the oncoming '80s, at least Billy's hair was. This band faked "live" better than most. Billy's chewing gum makes another TOTP appearance--and check out Mark Laff's Keith Moon-inspired drumstick twirls!
• Generation X Valley Of...
The Radio 1 Sessions
Here is the fantastic collection of all the John Peel sessions so you can hear just how good this band was live. Don't sleep on these versions of cool, lesser-known Generation X tracks such as Rock On and No No No, and a kickass cover of the Johnny Kidd & The Pirates song Shakin' All Over!
• Generation X - Radio 1...
Expensive Sound by Empire
As promised, here is my favorite song off Empire's AMAZING 1981 album, title track Expensive Sound. Bob Andrews handles lead vocals in addition to guitar, and does a fantastic job. I cannot recommend this album highly enough!
• Expensive Sound
Sonic Boom Boy by Westworld
Bob Andrews returns to the UK charts with the Top 20 song Sonic Boom Boy by his 1987 outfit Westworld. Check out Bob rocking an American flag shirt and Bo Diddley guitar. Elizabeth Westwood was a fun voalist too!
• Westworld - Sonic Boo...
Generation X REUNION
This is a fascinating watch from 1993, starring all the members of the original band (and a truly atrocious hairstyle on Billy), tearing through some of their classic material. It's fun seeing Billy trying to pull his vocals back from going full rock-god on these songs. Just goes to show you how far he'd come as a vocalist. Five years after this performance, Bob would release their third album sessions and piss off Tony and Billy. But on this night, they were tight as hell...
• Generation X LIVE (Lon...
Generation Sex
This is a fun concert from October 2018, featuring Billy and Tony from Gen X, and Paul and Jonesey from the Sex Pistols. Hence, Generation Sex. Get it...?

There’s a lot of poser blokes that claim they like this band or that. You’re definitely true blue punk aficionado and I truly appreciate this in depth look into a highly underrated, brilliant punk band from the original London scene. That first record should be as lauded as Never Mind the Bollocks.

Glad to see another Gen X fan. While I am no stranger to throwing a little "not real punk" shade, Gen X absolutely qualifies as real punk, even if a bit poppy. I think most of the criticism from within the scene is/was jealousy of Billy Idol going mainstream when better bands did not. As if though no one understood that singularly making great music isn't going to get you on MTV as much as an image...so of course MTV would love a snarling, punk uniformed Billy Idol. It's like being angry that your weird local art band didn't win American Idol. Who would even want that?

  • @PopCultureGraveyard

    @PopCultureGraveyard

Very good point! MTV has never had much to do with music. It turned certain image-forward artists into "musical spokesmodels," who with one good video could turn an album with one good song into an entire '80s career. The fact that Billy could deliver--with very well crafted and brilliantly produced albums--really separates him from the pack. Thanks for the comment!

You made a great point about dub! Both bands really understood dub, and each did their own version of it, whereas other bands simply aped the sound of dub when they tried to do it. Gen X was a really exciting band that was too explosive to last. Thanks for the comment, Joe!

I've yet to listen to the Gen X album but the first two LPs were very high quality pieces that fell victim to the snobbery of the English music press Their punk credentials were as good as anybody's but were seen as a little too slick to be be acceptable to the musical gatekeepers. A lot of rock fans had to keep their liking for Generation X secret because to confess the truth would mean immediate deduction of 'cool' points. It's been very interesting to hear people like Alan McGhee, founder of Creation records, admit to being a long time time fan. Easier now, when the band are history, than at the time. Billy Idol clearly had a talent for writing strong tunes, evidenced by his later solo success, Tony James wrote observant, literate lyrics about youth culture and the musical contribution of Andrews and Laff were high quality. Looking back, I think the record company pressure for 'hits' contributed to the group's demise. Had they been allowed to develop over the long term Chrysalis could have had a major success with the band. But anyway, thanks for a great overview of a criminally misunderstood band.

Very well stated, and spot on! And I think Tony James is one of the most underrated and multi-talented songwriters to emerge from that era. It's so easy in retrospect to forget just how jaundiced most music critics and "scenesters" were back then, especially in light of this post-Green Day world we live in. I think Gen X are one of those bands where the label just didn't realize what they had, due to them being snapped up in the panic to sign punk bands. I think you're right that a little nurturing could have helped, but Chrysalis--like all the majors--saw punk as a passing fad. They were smart enough to hang onto Billy for his solo career, though. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and welcome to the channel!

@@PopCultureGraveyard Great comment. Tony James and his best mate Mick Jones ( what ever happened to him!!? ) were right there at the beginning of punk in the London SS. At this time, all the later music writers were listening to Blue Oyster Cult, Pink Floyd and Emerson Lake and Palmer, with hair down to their waists. London SS were managed by Bernie Rhodes, and Malcolm Mclaren and the Sex Pistols would occasionally drop by the SS's rehearsal room. So the idea that former hippie, Johnny come lately, music journalists should sit in judgement of Generation X seems quite absurd. I don't think Tony James and Generation X have received the recognition they really deserve for most of their work. And Derwood's lead guitar work is a phenomenon in itself for a 19 year old lad. I find, for example, the anthemic opening guitar figure of 'Running with the Boss Sound' exciting everytime I hear it. This all sounds a bit fanboyish, but if there's any justice...etc. Thanks for a great and well thought through critique. I enjoyed your attention to detail. Keep up the good work.

Their debut LP is my all time fav punk album . But why call them pp punk? Because they play melodic punk? To me they are straight up punk. Same with, say, the Undertones who play very melodic songs.
