Memes aside, it's likely that Rykard was once a very noble man who had great relations with his family. Not only does Rykard have a portrait of Radahn in his manor. But we also know that Rykard once conspired with Ranni, since she gifted Rykard with the blasphemous claw. I don't have any evidence, but it's not hard to imagine he was on good terms with his mother, Renalla, aswell.

@@Tulip_bip yes and Mohg mostly has Zombies and Rykard doesn't even have soldiers anymore. The only other ones with loyal soldiers are Malenia and Morgott, and the latter sadly has to conceal itself from his own soldiers so they don't know they serve an omen.

@@TheEyeWatching That's my guess, not all paintings are though like the Godfrey painting. Notice how it's blown up to massive scale in Stormveil castle near the grafted scion? They probably were only able to do that with that one because it's a proper painting that was several thousand pixels in resolution. For smaller paintings you can't see super up close even with the telescope a painting filter over the models with some minor touch-ups works just fine and saves time.

That painting was always foreshadowing.

Volcano Manor is Marika's Original Holdfast. From way back when she was just another Empyrean. At least, the Mt Gelmir Knight Armor has Marika's symbol and not Rykard's on it.

I think the reason for his darker skin later on is because he learned gravity magic from an Alabastor Lord, who have stone-like skin It can’t be because of the Scarlet Rot because we see a closeup of his face in his cinematic fighting Malenia before she nukes Caelid, and his face skin is still dark

As Miracle of Sound put it, Radahn is the “saddest and Chaddest” character in Elden Ring. You should check out his Radahn song called “Scarlet Sky.” It’s so good!

There's a chance Radahn was apart of the plot but once he went crazy from rot he couldn't fulfill his end of the plan. Mohg's lair is underneath Caelid so Malenia only ended up fighting Radahn because she was trying to track her brother down.

@@faraam7111 it looks like his predictions were wrong, though, since no meteorite hits Sellia after his death. Other than to protect Sellia, he most likely stopped the stars to prevent the actualisation of Ranni's plans, since she was against the Golden Order

When I saw this picture of him in the volcano manor (Rykard and Mohg are really bad guys in the present days of Elden Ring, but damn they know the drip) one thing came to my mind: Maybe Rennala just lost her sanity AFTER the beggining of the shattering, seeing her son let himself being eaten by the Blasphemous Serpent, her other son leading a attack to the capital where all of them and other Radagon children used to reunite and leading to him becoming a irrational beast who no one could kill to end his suffering, and finally her beloved daughter, who maybe Rennala discovered her plan to late and had to know that maybe she could die with the rune of death. Imagine being the mother of all of these after your beloved husband lefting you for your former enemy of the past and all that shit happening one after the other, this would break anyone

Not only that, but it's implied that the glintstone conspectuses (conspecti?) basically saw her getting depressed and all but rebelled against her, forcing her to basically live alone in her chamber despite being their queen. Rennala its one of the few truly good persons of the Lands Between (alongside with Iji, Kale, Rogier, Roderika, Rya and Boc), even with that reborn bullshit rune she was just trying to help anyone who wanted to reborn

Seeing them side by side kind of drives it home. In the painting he looks badass and noble. The kind of general who leads from the front, and has a ton of respect from his troops. In the time of the game, hes a mad animal with rotted skin and face frozen in strychnine grimace eating corpses. I didnt really think about how horrible it would be to have your respected leader turn into...that...until I saw them side by side.

Notice how some of the most powerful mages that we encounter in the game are sorcerers that lean more into a strength + magic combo

Radhan, Rykard, Ranni, and Renalla have better relations than Marika and her consorts and children. It’s wholesome, and quite ironic to see that the most monstrous bosses were actually the most noble and loving people in the game. Malenia looks pure and angelic, yet she has to be the most vicious of them all.

She destroyed an entire continent, the fight was with Radahn and she didn't have the slightest mercy towards others... And even though corrupted, Radahn's soldiers honored him with the festival and maintaining the rot in Caelid... The end of his life is very sad if you think about it.

In the cinematic trailer where he is fighting malenia, his skin appears to be purple. So I'm guessing the painting was made before he learned the gravity spells and controlled the stars.

Look at this handsome young powerful lad. I wish we could meet him at his prime, and be friends, because I would be absolutely destroyed if we fought.

They did introduce an aspect of time with the secret dragon encounter in Crumbling Farum Azula. So it is possible. You could encounter the Three Fingers and its servants in their prime. The Badlands at their peak. Many potential Elden Lords (there are some Lord Runes that you can find). A time before the Stars were essentially beaten by the Golden Order. Rykard before he turned to blasphemy. Etc. But I really do just hope whatever route they go. It will be a truly *MASSIVE* expansion. Not something that most people can complete in like 16 hours.

tbf, the painting is still a painting so may not be 100% accurate. similar to how old paintings of Europeans make them look very good despite using makeup with lead that caused all sorts of pimples and blisters. It's not a crazy stretch, since Radahn is nobility, that the painter took some creative liberties

i think it's most likely, if it wasn't just an oversight, that training under an alabaster lord caused him to take on some similar characteristics as one. as the only other humanoids with dark gray skin we know of are the Nox, who are only tangentially associated with Radahn (he must be fought to visit nokron, he studied at sellia, a town founded by the Nox) and the dragonkin (who Radahn isn't associated with at all beyond living in the same region as the dragonbarrow his association with the alabaster lords is much more direct than those other two, given one was his mentor EDIT: one last theory, Radahn is a pretty huge guy, and his lore implies he sort of grew over his lifetime, it's theorised that Radagon and his family's red hair my have originally come from a curse from the giants. What does the one living giant look like? He's huge, he has red hair, and he has dark grey skin, just like Radahn. So possibly he slowly turned grey, just as he slowly got bigger and bigger, when he started out presumably as someone with what looks like just a skin tone you could see on a human in the real world, and small enough to ride the scrawny, normal sized horse Leonard

I should pay more attention for the paintings in the soulborne games. The hidden details of these games are awesome.

General Radahn was a Demi-god like no other in the world of Elden Ring. Looking at that portrait, just that one image, tells you this was a man people looked toward for advice, guidance, leadership. He was well respected not just because of his demigod status, but because, to the Redmane at least, he was a truly remarkable, strong, and intelligent leader they could lean on…. But we never meet (DLC included) the true General Radahn. Instead, we are treated to two corrupted husks of a once-mighty demigod. One whose very mind has been utterly eviscerated by scarlet rot (Starscourge Radahn), and the other a Frankenstein-esque monstrosity that combines the body of Lord Mohg with the helpless soul of poor Radahn. Rest in peace, to in the TRUE General Radahn…

It's cute how Rykard ha paintings of his family members in what was basically his home, he clearly loved his family like how Radahn and Ranni loved theirs, I wonder if they felt sorrow when one of their family members was thought to be dead or when their father left and their mother was devastated.

I love this painting . Showing what he actually looked like. I feel like EVERYTHING we see in game is an exaggerated fairytale of the great battles people talk about during camp fires . We literally are seeing peoples interpretation of a campfire story "then he rose to the sky and crashed down harder than a meteor to crush his prey" really could just be he jumped really high with his swords and killed a man lol. I love it. I love elden ring .

I would love a DLC where you go back in time, get to meet the demigods at their prime, before the fight between Radahn and Malenia. Maybe even be part of the battle, then you have the choice whether to help Radahn or Malenia. Depending on your actions, things in the world change; Radahn is no longer maddened by the scarlet rot, Caelid is purified and brought back into its original form... I'm sure a whole bunch of other things could happen too. Maybe you could meet Miquella before he was put inside of his egg, and even potentially meet Godwyn. Having a DLC that returns the player to the past has huge potential for this game, even moreso than in Dark Souls.

The most notable feature of Radhan in my opinion is his mighty horse! The dudes horse is drifting like its on roller blades. Not to mention at first i thought its part of his butt. Sucha chad horse 🐎 💪

for a second i actually thought his helmets low jaw gained teeth, but it actually somehow lost two...

It was the best form of General Radan, and now he is just a shadow of his former self. He is broken, his mind is defiled by scarlet rot, he will never be the same again. But even being like that, he still holds a huge celestial body that falls when we kill him.. A character truly worthy of the title of "Scourge of the Stars"

Anyone else see Raoh from Fist of the North Star in his design? I initially thought that was the helmet origin.

I remember listening to a theory that said that Radahn practiced dragon communion. Which would explain the large size and scary look, as well as the fact that Caelid houses the largest number of dragons and the cathedral. That said he never uses a single dragon incantation and doesn’t have slitted eyes (or slither on his belly). So take that as you will, but it’s a neat theory.

The corruption from the great rune and the effects of Shattering itself changed these once regal, tall Demigods to monsters that they once hunted........very ironic.

You should see him in Fist Of The North Star.

Saw this first play through. Made me sad. Radahn was big brain giga Chad back in the day, wish we coulda saw him in action/his full fighting power against the stars.

I'm still super curious who the masked figure in the others paintings is, that can be found up by where Ghiza invades. It's not the same as the Consort's mask that Tanith wears, and it's bearded but doesn't quite match any of the Glintstone Crowns or the Carian Preceptor's Mask of Confidence. The Upper-Class Robe that Rya wears and Tanith's Consort's Robe are both different colors with different patterns on the chest to the one worn by the figure in the portrait, and even the blue Official's Attire doesn't quite match either. The only other portraits of someone aside from his brother Radahn are of Praetor Rykard himself behind where Tanith sits (and the pre-blasphemy Rykard in a locked room), so it's obviously someone he's closely connected to, meaning either his consort Tanith or sister Ranni, neither of which quite match from the limited details we have. The red hood-like shawl covering part of the mask in the portrait is potentially similar to Ranni, as what's left of her charred corpse does still have a red shawl-like hood around her shoulders. Given that Ranni's story is all about hiding from the Greater Will and defying her Two Fingers, concealing herself behind a deceptive mask would make sense, as even her current puppet body is one that belongs to Renna and not herself. As none of the details seem to fit together fully, I doubt we'll know for certain unless the in-game asset is labeled, or it's showcased in an art book at some point.

I'm pretty sure the masked person in the painting is just Rykard. He was the Lord of volcano manor and in the Lands Between the head of an important family/castle traditionally wears a metallic mask (Consort mask, Marais Mask, ruler mask) also his tunic is similar to the officials attire whorn by Ghiza, one of his executioners, and the descriprion reads "Grubby blue robe worn by magisterial officials to carry out their grim tasks. Surveillance, executions, gruesome rituals...The darkest duties drive the wheels of mankind." and Rykard was an inquisitor, a pretty grim task. Also the red cloth of the mask could be a reference to his red hair like the Gelmir knight helm "Helm worn by knights once loyal to Praetor Rykard. Its crest of red feathers symbolizes Rykard's pedigree as Lord Radagon's son", also the mask has a beard like Rykard in his portraits

@@aifos5171 That's a possibility that I hadn't considered, specifically because there is already a unique pre-blasphemy portrait of himself shown with a very different appearance. The way the older portrait of him has been removed from the main halls & hidden away and replaced with the other one shown behind Tanith aligns with how Rykard became someTHING totally different after feeding himself to the Serpent. Story-wise this matches what the phantom Gelmir Knight tells you about shortly after you arrive, when he begs you to slay the serpent with the weapon he left behind. It seems odd that there would be an even older version of his former self on display while the other was hidden away in a room that requires going through the whole of Volcano Manor to be able to see. Also, the important art like that of Godfrey in Stormvale are always limited to specific places to be displayed, and this one is a generic piece of art and is in more than one location. While the main place the masked portrait is visible is up by Ghiza in the dining area, there's another one that's in shadow over a cabinet in front of Tanith as you turn right when coming in through the front entrance. That's after walking past minor still life paintings and images of a burning Erdtree, and in view of the main portrait which seems… at odds with the other designs of how and when Rykard's image is shown. Tanith's loyalty even after he fed himself to the Serpent, and Ranni giving him the Blasphemous Claw make both other them figures that Rykard would treasure and have reason to portray in the manor - even moreso than his brother Radahn. If it is a third portrait of himself, it's even more odd that neither of them would have portraits there, especially with plenty of other "filler" artwork hung about.

I think it’s Ranni. The game purposefully never shows her actual appearance, only the “doll” that may or may not have similar features. Ranni always shied away from the Golden Order and the Outer God. If finally pressured? into having a portrait done, someone like her would still be too cautious or rebellious to show her true face.

Imagine fighting Prime Radhahn.
