General Petraeus: Putin is desperate and in an irreversible situation | DW News

Four Star General Petraeus told DW that Ukraine should become a NATO member after the war with Russia is over. "The success of some kind of Marshall Plan for Ukraine needs a security guarantee, otherwise it will not succeed." He doesn't see any changes after the midterms regarding support from the US: "The midterms will not change this. There will be enough support no matter who controls which house."
He said, "Putin is in a very desperate situation which is irreversible for him if the US and other NATO members continue to provide the support."
Asked about the possible use of nuclear weapons he said: "The use of tactical weapons would actually not reverse Russia's fortunes on the battlefield. It would be very destructive, very lethal in a specific area on that battlefield, but it would not reverse this reality that confronts Russia. And that is the new development."
Asked about when the war might be over, he said that one of the factors he is watching most closely has to do with "Russian morale and does individual soldiers, do small units, do large units surrender or meld away, collapse? This is going to be a tougher winter for Russian soldiers than it will be for the Ukrainians. The Ukrainians are on their own soil with a very supportive citizenry around them. Doing whatever they can to support. The Russians are in areas where the citizens hate them. They're occupiers."

He’s way off I can tell you that. If he believes Ukrainians can win against the Russians. The Russians are using secret occult philosophy in this war. This is why they have refrained from any attacks during the Saturn Retrograde. Ukrainians have made the most foolish mistake by launching attacks during a Saturn and Jupiter retrograde. This means there will be untold hardship and consequences for them for decades to come. When you elect a comedian as president, he won’t be intelligent enough to know all this. The Americans are spurring them on in this season because they know it’s an economic trap the US military industrial complex has set to enslave Ukrainian for decades to come. It’s very naive to think Russia is on the back foot. Sometimes you have to take a step back to move two steps forward and it’s exactly what the kremlin is doing. The world needs to call for peace or I see the entire world heading towards a world war when Saturn moves into Aquarius next year. This entity will divide the world and cause serious social restrictions because of the impending world war. There will be more explosions of key Western European infrastructure. This is a war all of Europe will fight with Russia. All the Americans had to do was stay away from sending weapons to Ukrainian and then there would have been no suffering

I've thought the same with all high-level military interviews. It's clear these are a different breed and why they achieved their positions. Also forethought.. that Ukraine will need heavy hand security guarantees when it comes time to rebuild, else Russia may bomb reconstruction (when this breaks, Russia will have more than enough to do repairing Putin's damage to Russia.. sanctions should remain until Ukraine is rebuilt and Russia pays for a part of it - maybe sanctions will never be completely lifted). The PM or president of Finland impressed me too.

The Taiwanese must be outraged .General Petraeus the retired peacemaking peacekeeping 4 star general .And didn't he do well. See the anarchy and bastardry on the streets of Iran and Afghanistan and we do not see the situation in Iraq and Baghdad. Lots of good talking points there. A bit sad she interrupted his comments on post WW2 about the importance of the western allies security guarantee which allowed rebuilding Germany, Austria and especially West Berlin and kept a possible further war a cold one. Many of us Germans used to think of that as "occupation" and I grew up in a city with a huge U.S. army presence and while certainly one reason was to keep an eye on any potential threats from within Germany it provided protection against threats from the USSR.

HISTORICALLY, one must acknowledge that germany between 1870-1945 had been much of the focal points for the wars of this period but not necessarily DIRECTLY responsible for those wars. the agreement in the aftermath of world war two was too keep the Americans and the Canadians as well as the western allies in central europe, keep the russians OUT and to keep germany DOWN which resulted in a "peace" situation in europe where there had NOT been one for the previous 75 years. all of that has changed with the collapse of the soviet EMPIRE and the emergence of Poland, the Baltic states of Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and the breakup of the yugoslavian communist empire of ethnicities, religious minorities and disparate peoples. more important was the re-unification of germany into a centralized state in the middle of europe. where does europe go next after their PHYSICAL DEFENSE was sponsored by The United States Of America, Canada, The United Kingdom and the collective socialist hive of the european union?

By the time I showed up. in the 'occupation' forces decades later, thinks had changed considerably. One of the most successful policies of the last century was the creation of a stable, peaceful, democratic state in the heart of Europe -job finally finished in1991. They are very good points, but the elephant (or rather, the mouse) in the room people aren't talking about is the Bradley. Those aren't hard to maintain or over-heavy. We have thousands of those, they're looking to phase them out, and each one carries 9 TOW missiles capable of taking out any tank Russia possesses from 3 miles, and in the dead of night (whilst Russia's IR vision sucks.) PLUS it has a great gun for soft and semi-soft targets--significantly better than the Abrams in many situations. Plus, it's a battle taxi for ~9 soldiers. The only drawback is the lack of heavy armor, but the Ukrainians are so damned brave and they're already taking so many risks that I'm not sure this matters. 500 Bradleys and this war could be over by Thanksgiving.

I oppose this statement about the maintenarce of the M1: Ukraine has captured around 100 russian T-80. Those tanks alse have a gas turbine! Additionally, the weights (according to Wikipedia) of M1 and Leopard 2 do not differ that much: 63 tons for the M1A2 Abrams and 60-62 tons for modern Variant A6 (the older A4 variant in 55 tons). I think the US just wants the european allies to shoulder the supplies of heavy weaponry. For strategic reasons, so the US Car concentrate on East Asia. IMO this makes sense, but the given reasons from the US to not send tanks to Ukraine are a bit flimsy.

General Petreaus has been both on the battle field , in Iraq, and in the political conference room. He has seen how the US made mistakes in Iraq and has the benefit of using hind sight to make educated predictions about the horror unfolding in Eastern Europe. Thank you DW for giving this man a platform to speak and share his views.
