General Overview of the Stages of Change

Family Caregivers - spouses, parents, adult children, siblings, etc. - are often frustrated when their loved one who is showing signs of depression or bipolar disorder won’t acknowledge the problem or get treatment. The Stages of Change model explains that everyone moves at their own pace when making a change and that change is not necessarily a linear process. Understanding the Stages of Change can shift caregivers’ perspective, so they can have realistic expectations and be a more effective support for their loved one on the path toward mental wellness.
