General Election Battle (1935)

M/S of Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin sat at a desk reading, he puts the paper down and starts speaking about his policies. He talks about the increase in jobs and says political upheaval will harm this. He aims for social improvement and to make a fitter nation. He also wants to strengthen the League of Nations and says no great armaments programme will be undertaken, only that which is sufficient to make Britain safe. He concludes by saying the country needs experienced men at the helm and it is no time for reckless experiments.
Intertitle - 'Pathe Gazette is impartial in political matter and introduces Mr C. R. Attlee.'
M/S of Clement Attlee, the leader of the opposition, sat at a desk. He says the Government has neglected issues like schools and unemployment benefit and is more interested in rearmament. He says the Government made a mess of foreign affairs and the poor have to pay the price. He is for a true national policy where nations co-operate to secure peace and everyone will enjoy the fruits of the earth.
Intertitle - 'Other political leaders will give their views in the next issue of Pathe Gazette.'

    Attlee was so wrong, but he did serve very well in the national government during the war

    Ironically, by 39 Attlee was more hawkish than most tories. Churchill clearly admired him too despite his quite famous quips against him in the 45 election

    Damn, British politicians used to be classy. Guess it went all downhill from Churchill onwards.
