Gene Wilder - Pure Imagination

Музыка

Film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" (1971)
lyrics:
Hold your breath
Make a wish
Count to three
Come with me
And you'll be
In a world of pure imagination
Take a look and you'll see
Into your imagination
We'll begin with a spin
Travelling in the world of my creation
What we'll see will defy explanation
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanna change the world?
There's nothing to it
There is no life i know
To compare with pure imagination
Living there you'll be free
If you truly wish to be
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view
Anything you want to do it
Wanna change the world
There's nothing to it
There is no life i know
To compare with pure imagination
Living there you'll be free
If you truly wish to be

Watching the new Wonka actually makes this song much sadder to me. When he first sings it he is full of joy and inspiration, but the older version of Wonka is almost resentful and this version he seems almost exhausted living in this world he created.

When you take the book/Depp version’s backstory into account it gets even sadder. Wonka got too trusting and let his recipes get stolen, stopped trusting anybody after that

@@mrcritical6751as he should be. I hope the new Wonka films don’t change that. It’s a big part of his character how he gave so much to people, he gave them a new lease on life and they repaid him by taking away the one thing he held most sacred in the world. And just used it for money, not even to spread it like he wanted to. It plays into how Charlie makes him believe again and ensures him he can finally trust someone with his life’s work.

Actually it was from the 1873 poem Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams; - World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world for ever, it seems. With wonderful deathless ditties We build up the world's great cities, And out of a fabulous story We fashion an empire's glory: One man with a dream, at pleasure, Shall go forth and conquer a crown; And three with a new song's measure Can trample a kingdom down. We, in the ages lying, In the buried past of the earth, Built Nineveh with our sighing, And Babel itself in our mirth; And o'erthrew them with prophesying To the old of the new world's worth; For each age is a dream that is dying, Or one that is coming to birth. A breath of our inspiration Is the life of each generation; A wondrous thing of our dreaming Unearthly, impossible seeming - The soldier, the king, and the peasant Are working together in one, Till our dream shall become their present, And their work in the world be done. They had no vision amazing Of the goodly house they are raising; They had no divine foreshowing Of the land to which they are going: But on one man's soul it hath broken, A light that doth not depart; And his look, or a word he hath spoken, Wrought flame in another man's heart. And therefore to-day is thrilling With a past day's late fulfilling; And the multitudes are enlisted In the faith that their fathers resisted, And, scorning the dream of to-morrow, Are bringing to pass, as they may, In the world, for its joy or its sorrow, The dream that was scorned yesterday. But we, with our dreaming and singing, Ceaseless and sorrowless we! The glory about us clinging Of the glorious futures we see, Our souls with high music ringing: O men! it must ever be That we dwell, in our dreaming and singing, A little apart from ye. For we are afar with the dawning And the suns that are not yet high, And out of the infinite morning Intrepid you hear us cry - How, spite of your human scorning, Once more God's future draws nigh, And already goes forth the warning That ye of the past must die. Great hail! we cry to the comers From the dazzling unknown shore; Bring us hither your sun and your summers And renew our world as of yore; You shall teach us your song's new numbers, And things that we dreamed not before: Yea, in spite of a dreamer who slumbers, And a singer who sings no more.

"We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams; - World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world for ever, it seems."

To me it makes me feel happy, sad, hopeful, faithful, curious, imaginative and mysterious all at the same time. The way Gene Wilder performed this, from the way he sings, the lyrics, and its meaning, and his facial expressions, especially near the end just have this mysterious, and hopeful vibe to it I can't explain. Ever since I was a kid and first heard this, this magical song touched my heart and opened my mind. And I always thought that the look on his face near the end while he is singing, had something behind it. Like he was always lonely, and had a rough childhood. There was always something so wondrous about this Willy Wonka, yet somewhat mildly sinister or dark as well.

Gene Wilder may not have ever known it. But this film gave hope to so many kids in every hood/barrio/ghetto. I grew up with nothing, & like Charlie with family everywhere.... we struggled. I remember as a kid being in awe if I had ever seen anything outside of where I grew up. This movie motivated me to travel & see as much of the world as I could. Pure Imagination is what I play anywhere I put a foot on (Machu pichu, Guatemalan ruins, Scottish Highlands, walking through Moscow). This ghetto kid never would've imagined seeing any of this. RIP Gene Wilder.......you inspired this Charlie to see as much as he could in a world of pure Imagination. Edit: Thanks to everyone who connects to this comment. I'm still traveling and I still play Gene Wilder's version.

Never watched Willy Wonka, but I remember hearing this once when I was younger. I never knew the title and because I somehow only heard it once, I eventually thought my mind was making up stuff. I can now finally sleep in peace knowing I found the source of this tune after all these years😭

Both the music and his voice most likely give you this feeling. To me it's more so a song about Willy himself. He's not the person he always shows on the outside. As we see towards the end of the movie and how he seemed quite disturbed. Willy was reclusive, neurotic, controlling, and had trust issues. I think he was actually quite lonely. And I think this song captures more than just some feeling of wonder, but also is a bit bittersweet because behind all the joy and bright colors is actually kind of lonely and sad man. We can just look at the title of the movie, the movie is just as much about Willy as it is the factory.

Roald Dahl just needed to stick to writing children’s novels. The man did not have a clue when it came to cinema. He didn’t want Gene Wilder as Wonka and he crushed it as Willy Wonka. Yes its true they did take a couple of liberties I didn’t agree with but as an overall product, the movie’s legendary status still stands the test of time here in 2022. And the remake while more faithful to the book does not compare to the original movie and a big reason for that is the disparity between Wilder’s superior performance and Depp’s Wonka is too vast to quantify.

@@Dremag_Gaming That’s perfectly fine. My point I’m trying to make is literature and cinema are two very different things. They have different elements. Which is why what can work for a book probably will not work for a movie and vice versa. He opines from the mindset of a writer who could not understand the vision of cinema. Even the famed Ian Fleming didn’t think Sean Connery could be James Bond and he’s the signature 007 of the film series. So he can have whatever opinion he wants and then I have the right to analyze his opinion and choose to agree or (in this case) disagree strongly.

I only seen your comment after I commented, and you are dead right. This film is imprinted in most kids heads well the ones that watched it years ago. no updated version will ever beat the genuine article, it really was one of those films 😢

+fallen angel I am with you 100%. Gene Wilder was a legend in film, and one of those that we will never forget. I will never forget my first time seeing this movie, and seeing Gene Wilder on screen. Right up there with Alan Rickman.

1971! What a set that was, still to this day this song evokes deep emotion. It's uncanny.
