My older brother Ron had a roommate in Los Angeles named Larry Hartzell. That's the name that you can check out ( I may not have the spelling right?). However, he taught karate at Ed Parker studio in Los Angeles. Yeah he also was a Grappler in the LA area. He was about 6 ft and 200 lbs and he told my brother that when he took private lessons with Bruce and they would have sparring sessions that he couldn't lay a glove on Bruce and that Bruce was the real deal and not a phony as some people have implied. For reference point, this was the late 1960s and when he took lessons from Bruce was about the same year that Bruce worked on the film Marlow with James Garner.

John Little vai publicar um livro no dia 4 de setembro (daqui a 3 dias): "Wrath of the Dragon - The Real Fights of Bruce Lee". O livro irá esclarecer algumas coisas e expor falsas afirmações.

Gene LeBell was not a gorilla. Actually, he was a middleweight in size. He got bigger and fatter in older age. He did do well competing against the heavyweights in judo, though. He was not a world judo champion. He won the Amateur Athletic Union National Judo Championships. But beating larger opponents of the heavyweight division is not something greatly unusual in the sport of judo. Bruce Lee was not just learning from LeBell. He also learned grappling from others like Hayward Nishioka (1967 Pan Am judo champion who also won 5 consecutive national championships from 1965 to 1970 and was ranked 5th in the world in 1965 and 1967...so I would rank him much higher than Gene LeBell ) and Wally Jay. Nishioka always emphatically said Bruce was by far the greatest striker with unbelievable speed he ever saw ("one in a zillion," Nishioka said), and he said in a real fight, Bruce would be 4 times more scary than in a sport situation of sparring or an mma type of nthing for that matter. I think Gene LeBell would have much more trouble with Bruce than what Rogan seems to be hitting on. Rogan is kind of ignorant. And it's funny when you look at that fight Gene had with that so-so pro boxer Milo Savage who was older and well past his prime. It took Gene quite some time to get Milo down. I mean too much time if he was such a gorilla of judo. Milo had a bit of training in grappling. Gene definitely was not a standout great in judo like say an Isao Okano. He did win something, but he was not the fierce, great judo-gorilla Rogan makes it sound like. The question I have is whether or not Gene could get close enough to Bruce in a real fight. And Gene doesn't look like a very fast cat to me. Kareem Abdul Jabbar was a quick, 7'3", world-class super-athlete, and he said that when he sparred with Bruce, it was like trying to catch a rabbit, which he couldn't.

All this is true. But never mind. I understand that Rogan preferred LeBell because he knew him personally and they were good friends. But Rogan has no idea about Lee. I laugh my ass off every time I hear him talk about Lee, just like Eddie Bravo and others. For Rogan, Lee was a normal man of 1.72 cm / 63 kg who wasn't particularly fast or strong. Lee sparred with people like Joey Orbillo (heavyweight boxer), Hayward Nishioka (in 1965 he was the 5th ranked judoka in the world), Jim Kelly (karate points champion), Wally Jay (Jiu Jitsu legend) and many others, and they all said the same thing: They couldn't touch him, he was too fast. LeBell is significantly slower than someone like Kelly. So he couldn't grab Lee either, but Rogan completely ignores that. Milo Savage didn't have 50% of Lee's speed. Size isn't everything....but it does give a huge advantage in a fight...to offset the size and strength advantage, one needs vast, vast amount of skill....which most people don't have...unless you have some fantasy that you will win against some 300lb violent thug after 3 months of bjj training....that will go bad very quickly for you

Judging for that lack of awesomeness there is now way a person can bet on Gene to fight anyone…. In the UFC Randy Couture smoked the Best heavyweight boxing champion James Tony in just 14 seconds so imagine what would happen to Gene with Randy. Gene was an out of shape over rated fat man in his fifties while randy is insuperb shape. When Gene compete in Judo he won on points and never choked or tapped anyone out when he won the nationals. The world will never know, and trashing Bruce Lee in a hypothetical scenario like Taratino did in Once upon a time in hollywood, was both pure fantasy, and insulting. Joe doesn't know and no one will.

Bruce only fought defense ppl only know his kung fu movies. He would intentionally keep his distance and never strike first forcing them to lunge. On the lunge they run into his pinch or kick to some vital area groin knee throat etc. his book doesnt teach to fight in tournament setting its to end a fight someone else is forcing on you as fast as possible with least chance to harm yourself. Dude even said he'd give a gunman his wallet call the cops etc. His style isnt about seeking opponents like in mma its about ending conflicts you don't want.

thats a big if, thing is Lee is untouchable. I love how people take a surprise sudden move Labell performed on Lee while filming and dramatize it to mean superiority over someone. If you are then you're grasping in desperation for some credence that Lee was even defeatable. he'd just study Judo for a week and would have been able to crush it with JKD. True if Labell could get Lee on the ground without the sucker move, maybe. But that's a big question mark. Lee would have one punch KO his lights out. faster to the punch, harder punch, end of judo Lebell.

Respect to Gene Lebell, he was a great martial artist...However you can't put him in the same league as Bruce. I don't know who started the rumor but it's not true. Sifu Bruce was proficient in many martial arts styles including ground fighting. Mr. Lebell was one of Bruce's students as were many talented people in Hollywood and the martial arts community. And it's well known that Bruce traded styles/ techniques with people. He even traded techniques from a "Choy Li Fut" man in exchange for some "Cha Cha" lessons. Bruce was Cha Cha champion of Hong Kong. Bruce was not a point fighter, He trained for the real world

After coining his own fighting style, JKD, he once claimed he could beat anybody in the world. And you know he was right. So, Joe assume that the smaller guy will just stand still and let the bigger man grab him and do what he wants? lmao. what kind of thinking is that?, you can poke his eyes out, kick him in the groin, punch him on the throat, you can also back pedal, speed means nothing to Joe, especially for someone who is super fast and can hit hard with momentum like Bruce, he will break Gene's jaw in 5 different pieces before he even grab him, haha Joe is a joke sometimes.
