Will never happen...they're owned by Asmodee now.
I’ve played the 7 games and finished (and lost) in one of the campaign endings. I think Tom’s review is right on the money. It’s a good game that’s well thought out, mechanistically clean, the stories work well with a few surprises to boot. It’s really good, just not amazing. I’m glad to have played it. I might like to play it again with another good group, but if I sell it at not too much of a discount, I’ll have got my monies worth.
With that box art, I thought this game was about an office or a network TV studio.
Without having played the game, I can only guess at the writing term you're looking for. It sounds less like "railroading" and more like "confirmation bias" \ "wish fulfillment". As for the Crossroads cards triggering more often... maybe it's just me, but that has never been a problem when I've played Dead Of Winter. If anything, I think thank Annabelle Chan card comes up every single time the character herself does... I am intrigued by the "more interesting choices" comment.
I wonder if this will go to number 2 on the people's choice list like Dead of Winter did?
Here's to hoping Comonauts is the real winner from their GenCon demoed games. I preordered my copy as soon as I could after trying it out!
I am pretty sure the shoehorn is Trading in the Mediterranean.
Good review - but I wish it said how long it should take to play through a campaign. A good gaming day (8-9 hrs), or a whole weekend.

SisyphusX well while the box says 60-90 minutes per game, it takes closer to 90-120. Bear in mind that if you go game to game, some time can be made up since set up will be reduced. If played over a day, you could do it in less than ten hours start to finish. It’s better over two days. But I guess that’s going to be group dependent. I played two sessions solo running two games back to back to get the rules down before taking it out so that helps. The issue is getting a reliable group together. I had that problem with Charterstone which we liked but fizzled out due to real life getting in the way. This game is fiddly at first while you get rules down and like Charterstone, you add more rules during the story. Perhaps our experience with Charterstone made it easier to get to grips with Gen7. But I would suggest play 3 games at a time. The story gives a choose your own adventure vibe and while some plot elements are generic, it’s all well written. And it’s better than many other campaign games in terms of writing (say Legacy of Dragonholt). 3 episodes per session takes half a day, creates story investment, and if your group is able to flow smoothly you may find you can get through 4 games a session and wrap in a weekend of play. Repeat play weaves together different stories and you will see some overlap just as you did in Dead of Winter crossroad cards. Though I’d say the overlap is closer to that seen in 7th Continent when you revisit island parts solving different curses. Hope all that is some use.
$99 for something with this BASIC of components? “Gen7: A Cashgrab Game” I realize they get their copies for free to review, but how on earth can you not mention the price?

Dan I’m pretty sure he doesn’t ever mention pricing. I think the dice tower attitude is that cost is relative so one persons cheap is another persons expensive so it’s not a helpful discussion. Especially since long term the cost of the game could change.

@@Aoshi312 not true, they often comment on the price of a game.

I don't see why Tom needed to mention the price, you already know what it costs and have made up your own opinion on it. I'm sure anyone who was concerned about the price will look it up for themselves.

The entire point of a review is to gain another point of view on it, rather than just us judging it by its cover and snapshots. Price is one of those components. EVERY review that you watch, if you’ve heard of or seen anything about it, you come in with preconceived notions. Part of the review is informing and potentially changing/reaffirming your mind on it. Not an unreasonable ask by any means.
Oh cool. A bookmark.
I can't see why this game has a $99 msrp. It doesn't have loads of art and plastic. I was hoping for a crossroads space game where your on a broken down spaceship and aliens are the threat. You have to explored different compartments of the ship for components and food.

@@9720ryan Well, there is quite a lot that could be improved upon in dead of winter. It's hardly a perfect game. A similar but better game in space would've been great.
Tom, remember TIME Stories, Bob is a bad guy whatever they will come up with :P
This one is a miss for me. Definite SeaFall, First Martians vibes; not what I've been hoping for at all.
$99, Why? Oh I know Asmodee owns them now. So they have to justify their purchase.
Why does it look visually SO bland and dry? What happened, Plaid Hat? :(

Kristo Vaher The look they have gone for is very Star Trek, / 2001 rather than Star Wars / Aliens. The starship interiors are clean and white with no sharp edges, every department has its own crisp smart uniform with a specific colour shirt, the computers are all smooth and minimal iMac style with glowing pastel read outs. It’s a very valid sci-fi look, and one that used very often in other medias, but it’s not perhaps the most interesting one.
Darn. I was really hoping for something more exciting... like a Lost in Space or Battlestar Galactica feel.
The shoehorned story is zombies I'm betting given the last game using the crossroads system and the possibility of some sci-fi not technically zombies scenario using nanites, cyborgs, engineered virus or something.

maybe they shoehorned their Raxxon corporation into the game.
Man, I really love this theme, but REALLY didn't want a campaign game here. Alas!
Looks like someone made a "gamer" version of Fuse!
Yeah, passing on this one as well.
Yea, if people bought dead of winter for the dark themed mature art. They should of went for a Event Horizon/ Alien art type.
Nothing about the atrocious rules?
What did they shoehorn in? Zombies ... just a guess, they seems to be all games these days.

I love Dead of Winter....but I've only got it to the table twice. I'll stick with Dead of Winter!
This looks like a prototype version. Did they forget to pay the artists?
Hmm. Was pretty excited by the premise of this one but sadly the gameplay mechanics look kinda bland and boring. Seems like they put more way more thought into the story aspect than into making the actual stuff you're doing feel fun, thematic and engaging.
I thought dead of winter had huge potential but it ended up being just ok for me as I’m not a huge zombie fan. I thought maybe with a new theme that I might like it better, so I was excited for this one. My wife and I love campaign games...this one looks really bland and I’m a huge sci fi fan, probably will pass on this one.
And... You don't think telling people that your decisions in the game create the results you are choosing is a spoiler? It is. A meta-spoiler is still a spoiler. It's akin to telling people that there's a big twist at the end, which people will then be expecting.
Meh
I’m not sure I agree with all the negatives Tom mentions. The campaign gives the crossroads choices real bite and consequence, and whether or not someone falls on the grenade so to speak is very group dependent. The twists and turns are engaging and it feels like it has more in common with Robinson Crusoe than Dead of Winter in the sense that you’re placing workers around, optimising choices where possible, but still mindful of the long term impacts of event cards. The writing is good. Sure it has plenty of sci-if tropes, but if you’re expecting otherwise why buy Gen7 when it wears the Sci-fi theme openly? The game is packed to the gills with content too. I’d say it’s like both of Dead of Winter and the Long Night all in one hit. Organising the cards before game one is a faff, but once done you’re all set. I think the price tag has put some people off which is short sighted in my opinion because you really do get a lot in the box. Production is the usual high standard from Plaid Hat too. I think Gen7 could never live up to the reviewers platonic-ideal of the next crossroads game. What you do get though is a compelling and exciting experience. And the comparisons to Fuse? Yeah well. Dice placement exists in tonnes of euros too but no one likens them to Fuse. People want to stomp on Gen7 because of misconceptions and the price tag. All I know is that the people who have played it, really liked it. But saying that isn’t going to be ‘on point’ to go with the herd logic and BGG raters who are rating it 6 having NEVER PLAYED IT. Talk about a lack of ethics. At least Tom tried it but even he admitted to liking it despite his misgivings. I really do feel though that there’s an excellent gaming experience under the hood if people can see past that price tag and misconceptions. It’s not another SeaFall by any stretch! Gen7 is a great game buried under a lot of hate from those who resent the price tag. Of course that’s just my opinion. The opinion of someone who paid for it, is playing it, and loving every minute. So just try and play two games before you make your mind up. Game 2 onwards is fabulous. And if it’s the price tags putting you off, get the group you’re playing with to chip in and share the cost. It’s worth it. Enjoy!

I think pricetag should affect a rating at least a little though. Given two games that are equal in all other respects, but one costs $60 while the other costs $100, the $60 one is the better product.
I am very sad that I wont be buying this. There is to many similarities to other board games I have have that this game took from. Reroll the sci-fi theme Plaid Hat... I want replayability to that of dead of winter. The great thing about dead of winter, yes you open up with a story headline but every time you play that story is diffrent but you were not stuck on a linear path. Yes Gen7 has a choose your own adventure "campaign book" but just like video games the invisable walls are placed very noticeably. Personally if I opened the box and saw all the contents Id be very disappointed. I haven't played the game just my opinion based off of whats out now.
Asmodee(a French company who now owns Plaid Hat, Fantasy Flight, Z man, etc) is trying to set a standard of $100.00 for a board game. This piece of trash is NOT worth a hundred bucks. Freedom Fries!
Hmmmm.... production quality is not what I'd like. I don't think you can buy dice that boring if you try. Everything else looks equally generic which surprises me.
Watching the Watch It Played rules explanation with Rodney Smith was enough for me to cancel my pre-order of GEN-7. The rules in this game just seem like an overly complicated mess, and the absolutely lifeless visual style does not do it any favours. This is such a disappointing follow-up to Dead of Winter after waiting so long.
100 bucks? Not in a million year! Twilight Imporium is cheaper and it has a gigantic box with loads of unique pieces and things! This is a fracking card game! Dream on Plaid Hat!

Twilight Imperium IV is decidedly not cheaper, new-in-shrink. It's at least 35% more expensive at most online retailers at this time. The Gen7 box is stuffed with over 600 component pieces. If you do not want to buy Gen7, that's okay. But please, don't make inaccurate pricing claims.
