Gen Z: The Generation Of Body Alteration?

Ойын-сауық

My social media feeds are filled with women getting every kind of injection filler, and surgery to alter appearances. What was once a secretive and less talked about phenomenon is becoming increasingly popular and normalized in our generation. Is social media to blame for this rise in plastic surgery?

I’m small chested, and was always self conscious about it. However, I was successfully able to nurse 3 children for 12-15 months each, and they were all healthy and thriving. Having children gave me such a deep appreciation for my body in ways that plastic surgery never would have done.

As a 25 year-old, I am only now starting to feel confident in my body. I’m finally starting to leave the awkward young-adult phase where I didn’t feel quite like I fit into my body. Social media absolutely is feeding into this and it’s so sad, especially when a lot of the women who have plastic surgery ALSO USE FILTERS AND PHOTOSHOP. And it’s lazy. Don’t like the size of your butt? Instead of working on yourself either mentally or physically like going to the gym and building muscle, they jump into surgery.

The more people get used to changing something easily purely for vanity, they will spiral at some point. Its harder to deal with aging and all the things that come with it at increased speed later, when you erase every little flaw early before that right away...at some point you cant fix stuff anymore...and then you get Madonna, who is still trying instead of letting go. We age in stages so we can get used to the change in our look. We dont just wake up one looking 80...that would be brutal. But people who try to look 20 until they are 80 will have a melt down for sure.

This plastic surgery issue is seriously out of control. I have a downturned nose and even though I had come to terms with its existence, people keep talking with me about it all the time like "You have a job and money. Why don't you get plastic surgery?" and it has started to effect me all over again. I used to be a very sickly kid and I have went under the knife for many lifesaving procedures for my heart and kidneys. I don't want to experience that trauma all over again just because of the way my nose looks. I don't want to mess with a properly working, healthy organ but seeing that even a 15 year old kid is telling me to get plastic surgery is starting to get beyond draining. People should just learn to shut up and let others live peacefully.

The way I see it is that people function as mirrors and therefore they will reflect their own insecurities, hatred on others. on others. When I was younger I also felt insecure about my nose because it wasn't perfect like everyone else's. and then I grew up and started to love my profile and my imperfect nose. At that moment I stopped caring what people could tell me. I know it's annoying when people criticize you but you have the right to tell them to stop talking about your body as if they had the right to an opinion, it's called setting limits and it's healthy. Don't change because of other people's criticism, people will never be satisfied with you or with themselves. 😁

I dont know, most people started making bad decisions because they were to impressionable and got messed up by the things that were around them in bad schools. Sometimes promising kids (decent, smart, willing to learn) really get held back by bad schools. I have seen it with the kid of a friend of mine. The last thing he needed was this "public exposure"...he needed to get away from all the crappy teens around him and boom...graduated with amazing marks. Before that he was told he would barely finish school. You can get public exposure in sport clubs, youth organisations etc. in a better way I think.

The grossest part to me is that people have shamed me for saying that it's not good for your mental health to get cosmetic procedures like this done, that's how deep the brainwashing has gotten. I always hear the argument that it's empowering for women to fix their insecurities, but that in and of itself is such an insecure perspective. The empowering thing to do would be to accept your flaws and love yourself anyway. Unless in the case of some sort of disfigurement, I don't think people should be getting any plastic surgery done to themselves. It not only affects their own self perception, but it also affects the self perception of others, especially young girls. I appreciate you talking about this topic. I always see a lot of young female viewers in your comment section, and they really need to hear what you're saying. From a 26 year old woman, it does get better! We all hated our bodies growing up, it is perfectly normal and you don't need to change your body to be beautiful.

You know the worst part about all this cosmetic surgery to me, is that it doesn't work. Here's a warning to any women who are thinking about it. As a man who is atracted to women, 9/10 times you were much prettier before the surgery or botox. Us guys like a woman who is able to smile much more than one with no wrinkles. We like one with body parts that match and were grown normally than one who is out of proportion. It isn't worth it. You're already pretty, you just need to learn to see it. And if you start down the road of cosmetic surgery, do you think you'll ever stop? If you can't learn to accept yourself, no amount of surgeries will be enough. You will always be able to find that 'one thing' that 'needs to be fixed' over and over and over. It's just sad.

PREACH BROTHER. I have made this point a few times myself. While attracting us shouldn’t be a woman’s only goal, if that is the goal the plastic surgery is not the way. Trout pout is a MAJOR turn off. Botox makes people look like cretins who can’t even control their own face anymore. I don’t want my daughter subjected to that. As a woman, plastic surgery looks awful to me too most times than not. I mean, you see fresh young girls turn into fourty year old corn stars and for what reason? I get that there are some men who like that look but I'm 100% certain that most men prefer the pretty girl next door look than the bimbo barbie look. I dont know, I think as a woman you grow up thinking that men only like women who are 90 lbs with ridiculous curves and so you think that your "average" body is not enough and this is a hard mindset to break. I myself am on the chubbier side and although I've had men interested in me i still feel undesirable. I get why those women do it because unfortunately the pressure to be beautiful is tremendous for women but it makes me sad.

I had a relatively large nose for my face when I was in middle school. I was always insecure about it, even in high school. I'm 26 now and I love my nose. It's strong, unique, and it fits my face. I feel a sense of resonance with it because it's mine and only mine. The saddest part about plastic surgery is that it standardizes the look of humanity. It literally mitigates what makes you look like you. There's something inherently spiritual about the faces and body types we are born into. It's like they are symbolic of who we are. And yet some people call altering (and often harming) them self-love. It's ass-backwards.

I am a 6' 5" guy and have never understood why people want to be tall. Once you get so tall it becomes incredibly difficult to find clothing that fits (clothing companies assume everyone just gets wider not taller), you deal with constant neck and back pain from having to look down at everything and people CONSTANTLY staring at you. I don't wish to be shorter cause this is how I was made to be. When it comes to looks people need to accept who they are and stop changing their image to please others.

I went to high school with girls who got plastic surgery and fillers. The filler girl told me she gets her lips done once a week. I found this out during graduation but she could've been getting them at an earlier age for all I know. The girl who got plastic surgery got a rhinoplasty when she was 16. I understand getting this kind of surgery because of a deviated septum or other medical issues, but I'm convinced that it was pure self-consciousness and vanity that caused her to change her nose forever.

I was relentlessly teased for these things. And then in college, I met a guy who told me my nose was adorable, My freckles were so cute, and He told me he loved my hazel eyes. What’s really amazing to me is that-very often-the lip injection thing is plainly obvious, and intensely unappealing. A lot of men, at least the men with values and sensibility, find overly-adorned or altered looks unattractive in general. The giant fake eyelashes, the kool-aid hair coloring, the cheesy hair extensions, the stupid lip plumping; it all comes across as desperate. Most of us aren’t at all into the ‘hey, look at me’ type of girls.

Most girls who do these things end up looking either like drag queens or blow-up dolls. Not a good look at all. Even worse still are those butt enhancements - sorry ladies, but nobody will want you if you're stick thin with an artificial rear end as big as a spring pig at the county fair. As women who get their butts artificially pumped-up start to age, it looks like they're wearing a loaded diaper. With any permanent surgery, always ask yourself, "will this still be hot in 30 years? Is it even hot now? And does it actually make me happy long-term?"

Exactly. I've been considering a breast reduction since high school, although I may wait until after I have kids so I don't have to do it twice. It's a medical reason. At 20, I'm already having back and shoulder pains, especially when I don't sleep quite right. It sucks. The one thing that is nice about it is that I'm generally pretty curvy, at least as of right now, and my chest and stomach look about even. I'd rather have a bigger stomach and big boobs than just a bigger stomach and no boobs. It doesn't look right.

Despite the fact that it’s considered a cosmetic surgery, the bone deformities in my hands caused me a lot of pain and reduced my grip strength tremendously. So mine was considered a surgery that would help me function better. However it was by far the most painful two years of my life and would never want anybody to go through what that guy went through or what I did

As time has passed, each additional piece of artwork has had even more significant meaning to me and is almost like a story of where I came from and where I've been, the situations that have made me into the man I am today. Have I changed in the course of all that time? Absolutely. I would not say that you make it your insecurity but rather work on your insecurities. Remember nice personality traits are very hard to come by they are very hard to cultivate. But when you work on yourself and you have the objective beauty; the world becomes even more easier. Work on yourself and remember even though you’re 13, you having the sense of what is wrong and what kills your confidence is the fact that you’re much more mature than others kids who are playing with barbiedolls and video games. Just use your energy wisely to cultivate your emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

I think we have gotten so used to the idea if you aren’t happy you can buy yourself a new face/body as if it isn’t a massive decision. I had a nose job 7 years ago, and this came after YEARS of contemplation, planning, saving, and working through insecurity. For me, it was one of the best decisions i’ve made for myself - not because I was buying myself a new nose on a whim in order to fit a new trend, but because it was something I had truly thought about and considered for such a long period of time that I was certain that this was the right choice for ME personally. That being said, I can agree that cosmetic surgery has become such a common and trivial/normalized thing for women especially. It’s quite sad the pressures people feel to fit into a societal mold of being “beautiful”. For me, getting my nose done allowed me to stop fixating on every single flaw I have. It allowed me enough relief that I was able to take a step back and accept myself for who I am. That being said, I think there are a lot of people who get plastic surgery and then go the opposite way of “ok what next”. I think you really need to consider this very carefully and you need to do some soul searching and self work. For me, cosmetic surgery was an act of self love - however, I do not believe this is the case for many people who seek it. I definitely do not recommend cosmetic surgery to others just because it was the right choice for me personally. It is a very personal choice and I think society has allowed it to become way too mainstream.

Thanks for this I honestly don’t like plastic surgery unless it’s to correct something that actually hurting the cody like a cleft palate. But for years I wanted my teeth whitened, I go to the dentist and they decline me as I have a receeding root on my incisor. I did more research into whitening and found that it actually destroys your teeth. And most people have veneers which are fake teeth clipped into your teeth but they are shaped to look peg like.

Lots of people get 'cosmetic' procedures for non cosmetic reasons and this is also becoming more common. For instance, getting botox in my forehead is very appealing to me as I frown so much at the moment, I often get headaches from my forehead being tensed up all the time. Botox would relax those muscles and fix that problem. Now that would fall under cosmetic surgury but i'd be getting it for a non-cosmetic reason. I also will likely have to get a breast and body lift in the future as I'm currently rapidly losing weight following bariatric surgery. Again, that's cosmetic but it's also a necessity for my health.

I was born with a mild case of cerebral palsy. This caused me to have weakness in my legs and several balance issues. Though I would often ask God why I was born like this, I was never ashamed of myself. A while later, I got the answer to my question. My parents told me that people wouldn't accept me into certain preschools because of my disability. One thing led to another, and this brought my family to a Christian church, where we got saved. Now, I know that this is long-winded, but here's the point: Never be ashamed of what you do or do not have. I learned from a very early age because of my disability to be content with the body God has given me. These other people are modifying themselves like nobody's business, and they're miserable. Better to be happy with what you have

There’s definitely some good reasons to get Botox, especially for people who have pain. My friend has EDS and MS and part of her pain management protocol is Botox. However if you’re wanting to look younger there’s other things that are less invasive you can do to slow down aging signs. Retinoids and SPF being 2 main things.

I’m 33 and I have disliked my nose since forever, I wouldn’t mind fixing it but I’m also ok with living with it. For the longest time I always hated how my face looked. I’ve struggled with Acne and started medicine for it. I always wanted to put on makeup to cover my flaws. One time I was getting ready for a dance that my friends invited me to. One of the moms really liked to do makeup and was really good at it. She put some on me and I didn’t feel like me. I hated it. I learned to love my freckles, 24/7 sunburned nose, and even my acne, I learned how to love myself. It makes me sad to see that society is pressuring men and woman to changes the way God made their bodies.
