Thanks for another fascinating guided tour through some great records. I think I'll dust off my Previn Mahler 4, which I haven't listened to in a while - and you're right, it's a wonderful recording. Come to think of it, the 4th is probably the most dance-like, even "balletic" of Mahler's symphonies, so no wonder Previn does it so well.

You make an excellent point! Previn always responded to dance elements in music. And his ballet recordings are wonderful.

Have you forgotten Handel messiah by Sir Malcolm Sargent royal Liverpool philharmonic 3 record set on hmv? This was recorded in 1959 by the legendary tube EMI btr3 tape recorder. Bass goes right down as in concert, natural string tone in broad soundstage and nonpareil alto and soprano. I listen to the highlights on CD on a daily basis!

One of my favorite Previn recordings is "Belshazzar's Feast" on EMI. Fantastic sonics and performance, alternately jubilant and atmospherically eerie. I collect recordings (some 80 at this point) of "Le Sacre du Printemps" and my favorite--closely followed by the Boulez recording from 1969--is the stereo Markevitch from 1959. Stunning, brutal, amazingly dynamic with that lovely mid-hall sound you mention frequently on EMI discs. I have the Testament CD reissue with the 1951 mono version and also the SACD with the original album art. The tam-tam is used to thrilling effect; I have to say, though, that it's a bit more subdued on the SACD version.

Giulini and Dvorak were always a good combination. My first “New World” was a budget Seraphim LP with Giulini and the Philharmonia. Of course, I imprinted on it and it’s still a favorite to this day. I also have the European pressed Columbia of his D8, another cherished recording of my absolute favorite Dvorak symphony. Hi there! Great to see you highlighting David Munrow's Early Music Consort. I've been aware of the sound of early music for a long time, but only recently started to investigate it seriously. I first became aware of Munrow through his collaboration with folkies Shirley and Dolly Collins, and liked what I heard. The two box sets, The Art of Courtly Love and Music of the Gothic Era are absolutely fabulous. It's rather odd that as someone who really doesn't like opera singing, I've taken to early choral music. Cheers - Hedley

Thank yo for all your knowledge. Love the music but less familiar with labels, pressings and musicians to look out for. I would love a video of things to easily avoid like I remember hearing that either Bernstein or Karajan was doing weird things in the studio or something on some of the DG's? What's the best/worst pressing of Glenn Gould Goldberg Variations? I own a ton of Angel recordings - are they not worth my time? Anyways, thanks again and keep making these please

This is probably the best reissue on vinyl of the 1955 Gould Goldbergs. www.discogs.com/release/7828110-Bach-Glenn-Gould-The-Goldberg-Variations For the later recording you are stuck with original vinyl which is variable. There is a nice CD reissue putting both together www.amazon.com/Glenn-Gould-Complete-Goldberg-Variations/dp/B00006FI7C/ref=sr_1_3?crid=21P1NOM0L4SVN&keywords=Gould+Goldberg+variations&qid=1650393268&s=music&sprefix=gould+goldberg+variations%2Cpopular%2C180&sr=1-3 I've never found decent American Angel pressings from the analogue era, but if you are happy that's all that matters. Later digital era Angels are much better. Karajan certainly was heavily involved in the sound of his records, which is why the recent remasterings from Emil Berliner Studios on SACD (which are also remixed) sound so fabulous - but they are expensive. If there are Karajan records you like just try to get earlier German pressings.
