I love that you can see the shock in the moon presence’s body language. It knew that you killed Gehrman, and thinking you were just a hunter, tried to bind you to its will. But you were more than it was expecting. You were in the process of becoming a Great One yourself, not a tool, or a surrogate child, but an equal. A threat. And as it, the being hosting the nightmare dies, your human form breaks down. You don’t need it anymore. But the dream is a useful place to hide. And the doll deserves to be remembered. So you both care for each other, you maintaining the immediate reality, and her caring for your body. No more hunting. No more death. Just peace.

One thing to add. When you beat the Moon Presence you get a trophy called Childhood's Beginning. The description of the trophy says, "You became an infant Great One, lifting humanity into its next childhood." That's a problem, but not for the player. Arianna's fate and what it means for the player is, in my opinion, perfect Lovecraftian horror. A woman cursed with madness and monstrosity by an unknowable entity through no fault of her own. And a hunter, a scholar, who must ask themselves: Are they willing to do unspeakable things to learn the truth? And is that truth worth knowing? It's bleak, it's horrible, nobody wins no matter what choices they make. It's perfect.

@@JavorinaMaria I see what you mean, and it's a nice question to ask if we forget that this is a video game with NPCs and unreal entities, and instead read at the implications. If you kill a mother, the child might survive if you manage to care for it and if it is mature enough, but in most cases, it is very hard to keep it alive. But... what about a mother you rip off her child ? Isn't it undirectly linked to her womb ? Is it the physical or emotional trauma that can lead her to her death ? Even though she doesn't want to BE pregnant, a child becomes somehow linked to you. It's not the child's fault, nor the mother's having been raped, both are... Victims. We didn't ASK if she wanted to have her child, we didn't ASK if she was ready lose it, hell at that moment we took advantage of her broken mental state to hurt her, to abuse her once more. Even if we are supposed to "be a hero", what are we in that moment but just another monster lost to violence to accomplish our desires. Ariana didn't die because of a simple error or lazyness, I don't beleive From Software's designers to be that uncoherent with the game, Ariana died with her child because she is their mother. Just imagine the torture you need to go though to break your spirit this way, she couldn't hold her will to live another abuse.

If you hit her she collapses the way she does in the video. The, "pick up item," prompt appears for her shoes either way though. I've always liked to think the transcendence of the Hunter into a Great One, young though they may be, is a sign of hope. The distant Great Ones, who sympathetic though they may be cannot understand humanity, or the current people in power, some like Laurence and Ludwig who tried and failed to help, and others like Micolash and the Choir who commit or enable incredible violence, are emblematic of an older system. They are structures that failed and which have harmed many through mistake, purposeful action, or lack of understanding. But the Good Hunter becomes a Great One, transcending their old form, becoming something new; a Great One who was once a person. You have a new beginning but were born through the destruction of the holdovers of the old system, and in doing so are the mark of a new one. Currently small and weak, but with great potential, and with proper guidance can hopefully prevent the same atrocities that led to this. The Great Ones are all at the peak of the systems they inhabit. Ebrietas is the Great One who was found and exploited by the Choir, Rom works with Byrgenwerth to hide the secrets of their research and mistakes from the world, Amygdala connects to the Nightmare that Mensis uses and the Wet Nurse guards the infant they use to call other Great Ones, and the Moon Presence creates and maintains the systems of the hunters. So by destroying all of those entities and tearing your way through those organizations to them, you topple these structures. From there, with nothing left, a new system must be made, new and feeble to start, but one that can grow, and can hopefully shape a better world than the systems that preceded it. In this then, the player characters status as an outsider to Yharnam fits well. You start not knowing the city and its issues, and the more you see, the more your insight grows. First to the horrors of the hunt, and then to the horrors of the systems that created it. Your journey becomes one of witnessing horrors upon horrors, and using the strength you cultivate through the dream to tear it all down to create something new, in the hopes of preventing that evil from repeating once more. You quite literally dream of a new world, and in doing so potentially make it a reality through your actions.

With the game finished maybe its safe to "spoil" certain things? All I want to clarify is one of the endings, specifically the scene with the hunter and the moon presence before the fight, so this is the last warning in case you don't want to know, Skyen: As you figured out, consuming the 3 thirds of Umbillical Cord grants the player the opportunity to achieve the "best" ending, which is transending humanity. If the player does not consume the Umbillical Cords and beats Gherman, the Moon Presence comes down from the sky, embraces the hunter (the scene you described via text as the Hunter being injected on the womb area) and...umm... Consumes them? Turning the Hunter into the new Gherman. Now the Hunter will be the keeper of the Hunters Dream, the guide of new hunters to come and their executioner when the night of the hunt meets the dawn of a new day That's all I wanted to say about this particular thing, I have other things to say that I will put in another comment

The one thing I will contend is that while the Moon Presence is the ultimate antagonist, I'd hesitate to call it the "villain". It never asked to be part of any of the these events, it was beckoned, called forth from whatever unlovable eldritch realm its natural habitat might be by the hubris of men. Especially in light of the previous analysis at the end of the DLC, the Moon Presence could be considered just as much a "victim" as any one else, trapped in the same cycles.

I'm always watching videos about the lore and the story of Bloodborne, but no matter how much I search for answers I never feel close to a complete picture of what Bloodborne is. But this, that Bloodborne isn't some kind of thing to be solved, that you, in fact, were never meant to 'solve' it at all? That actually gives me a sense of closure and completeness about my feelings towards this game that nothing else has. I guess I'm just trying to say that, in admitting to not having one clear answer, you discovered the only 'answer' that really matters - the opportunity for more questions.

I like how the overall happiest ending for your character is the most simple ending to get, submitting your life to Gehrman. By submitting your life you are giving up your quest for the eldritch truth, and because of that you get to wake up and live your life (presumably). Refusing to submit means you refuse to give up your pursuit of knowledge, as such you become a slave to the Moon Presence. A typical ending for your average Lovecraft protagonist, giving into the madness and becoming slave to it. But by pursuing the eldritch truth, scraping the walls for every bit of knowledge you can possibly find, you happen upon the Umbilical Cords. With these cords you can defy the Moon Presence, a Great One. You have transcended, but how much human if any is left in you? Are you still you despite being a little slug boi?

Submitting your life does nothing but allow the horrors to continue. There is no certain “good” ending in Bloodborne.

Dunno if anyone have told you this: But there are 4 "third umbillical cords" you can get, so you don't *need* to kill Ariana to get the third one. It is attainable without violence. So provided enough information, in this sense, it is possible to "break the cycle", without first perpetrating it against her. Edit: Like people pointed out, the 4th one still requires violence to acquire. I forgot about that detail.

  • @rayseodium

    @rayseodium

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't you always have to use violence to get the third cord? (Technically you can get all 4 in one run) You get one by defeating the wet nurse and the other in the old workshop. Now, either you murder "blessed" Arianas unwanted child or you murder Iosefka after some event has triggered. Iosefka experimented on people and herself. Being part of the church/choir she may have injected herself with the essence of a great one to bear its child. This seems unlikely (there are no hints to this), so my guess is that she was also "blessed" by the red moon.

Well that's not... really true, is it? Cause the 4th cord still comes from a person you have to kill to get it. Like yes in a single strict sense you don't have to kill Ariana specifically, but his analysis that the only way to "end the cycle of violence is to perpetuate it by enacting violence on another first" is still completely true - I'll grant you that the other source of the cord isn't an 'innocent' like Ariana and is arguably a more willing participant in the whole womb blessing thing, but to say "it is attainable without violence" is just, blatantly not true.

Bloodborne is mostly an enigma, with the vague things that are happening, things not being clearly explained, but it also makes you feel....a lot! Makes you wonder, feel disgusted, confused, terrified, excited, curious. The list goes on! There's definitely a story, an explanation probably as well, but first and foremost it was just a really good experience. And so was this series! I'm sad to see it end, and I'll miss it. "How do you end violence?" The answer isn't always reactive, it shouldn't be. You will most likely know more about what you can or cannot do than what could or could not happen. Why trouble yourself with ending a potential cycle of violence in the future, when you could instead be proactive and have *insight* to know the possible repercussions of your actions.

I know this is more tangential than exactly on- topic but the vigilante/retributive justice seekers never seem to grasp how much further injury they cause to victims. It plays over and over in media and in commentary everywhere, people talking about the harm they will do to the perpetrators but never talk about the healing they will support in the ones they supposedly love. Weelchairs as a "prison" in character design also come from something real, the thoughts of their users. People that is fully disabled have this thoughts of them being tied to the chair because that without them they are "useless", but at the same time, the feel that they still are "useless" and "a burden" to others, making them suffer from mental illness like depression and unhealthy mindsets. They are imprisoned, but not by the wheelchair. Their prison is their own mind. It does translate perfectly to Gehrman, because when he gets in the mindset of having to force to forget, he stands up from the chair, he gets out of his prison with a strong will, something that you need in order to fight mental illness. You will never fully win, but you will keep yourself able to stand.

The other thing I wanted to comment is about the science bit of the video To me, there is no such thing that humans should not know. Knowledge is a very powerful tool that can bring both great help and horrible damage depending on how they are used. A prime example that springs to mind is Nuclear power. Humans discovered how to split atoms, and that doing so releases a lot of energy. That is the knowledge, and two major applications of said knowdelege are generating electrical energy and weapons of mass destruction. On the hand of electrical energy, nuclear power is thousands of times better that fosil fuels. It produces a lot mor electricity using a lot less material, leaves behind a lot less contamination and could allow to have more energy plants in hard-to-reach places (like a disaster zone). While on the other hand we have Nuclear Warheads and Atomic Bombs. Devices that leave behind undescribible destruction, insurmountable pain and harm, and deep scars on anything and anyone that encounters them. Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Chernobyl... To me, the problem resides on unchecked motives and goals. On following the greed and or lust for what the knowledge can give you. On that thirst of power, of unbound strenght. The recklesness that follows hurrying to achieve something without understanding what you're doing

There are a couple of thing I want to mention. Firstly, with the depection great ones being slug-like tentakle creatures and the hunter consuming a great ones umbelical chord, it seems safe to assume that the hunter transformed into an infant great one. One, that knows about the horrors of the hunt and has the ability to break the cycle. 2. The Moon Presence is the big baddie in this story or rather the reason all the bad stuff happens. But what are its motifs? Why does it do, what it does? The easiest solution I was able to come up with: Moon Presence is a great one that "hunts" other great ones. The MP guided humans to the great ones, leading them to seek ascension. This, in the long run, killed many great ones (or like the Brain of Memphis/Amygdala enslaved them). If not for the hunter, who broke the cycle, humanity would eventually have ascended and under the influence of the MP, would have continued the violence against the great ones.

I’m sad I only just discovered this series. Bloodborne is my favorite game ever (though elden ring has been amazing too), and I would have loved to have submitted something for the many meanings of bloodborne. Since I’m too late for an official submission, I’ll put my thoughts here. One theme I felt strongly throughout my play through but seemingly absent from Skyen's was the theme of evolution. From the lecture building notes, "Master Willem was right. Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race." The goal of many major characters in the lore was to contact the great one's, but why? To learn from them, become like them, to ascend to their level and become gods. When they find the old blood, the blood of the gods, they swallow it to gain their strength. Just how in christianity consuming Christ's blood and flesh makes us like him, so too in Bloodborne does drinking the old blood make us like the great ones. The moon presence is like a beast, and so the people of Yharnam become beasts. The scholars of byrgenwerth sought knowledge, power, and finally godhood through an evolution of their minds and bodies. Many characters either are or become monsters throughout the game, and every time that character had chosen the path of blood. I think there are many literal and thematic examples of evolution and what appears to be de-evolution in this game, so I will just give one here as to not take too long. The research hall is a horrifying place where people were experimented on to become the celestial emissary. It is here we can see every stage of their "evolution." A new patient, a bag head with body, just the bag, the living failures, the blue creatures, and finally the emissary. Evolution through the blood and insight in my mind defined how I initially saw bloodborne, seeing how treading further down this path makes you stronger, but less human. Gaining blood without insight makes you a beast like the Ludwig or Lawrence, insight without blood leaves you empty like Willem or Rom, and following both is incomprehensible as seen by everything Mensis related. Despite being a terrible person, Micolash "evolved" effectively as he retained his sentience, got his own astral realm, communed with the great ones, and generally attained everything he wanted. To go back to Willem's quote, "Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race." This single line is the mentality driving many of the atrocities committed throughout the game. If we are going to do these things, we might as well do them so completely and terribly that a result is guaranteed. Evolution is a natural concept, that it is simply a part of nature, and it will happen eventually with or without our asking. Why not speed it along and evolve sooner, and become like the gods themselves? Another note that I think it is interesting how the closer to the great ones a character becomes, the less effect they have on the real/waking world. Micolash fully ascends to the nightmare and thrives and believes with his death he will wake up, but in reality he has no living body to return to. Gherman has what was once a paradise for him, his dream, where he has a living doll of Maria ,a workshop, and the graves of allies to mourn, but he no longer has any impact on the world than being a mentor to a chosen few hunters. Willem likely became so full of insight he probably saw beyond all barriers of reality and knew most truths, but was incapable of sharing even a single word with us. Finally the hunter themselves are the only character to make a complete evolution and become a sentient and powerful great one, but they are still a child, and likely will have no strength for likely centuries or more. Almost as a sick joke, even if you could say all the pain, sacrifice, torture, and everything else actually did result in something tangible, a true human great one, they would not have any impact on human life. Everything that was done to create a great one benefits no one but the great one themself, and even if that great one wanted to they could not help anyone from the real world. In what I believe was a lovecraftian note, all our suffering and sacrifice is ultimately pointless as none of the benefits will ever be felt by the people who were hurt the most.

Now that I posted that I think I should also say why the theme of evolution matters, instead of just how its presented. Bloodborne blatantly and repeatedly shows why and how using the blood is bad. You become a monster, you go mad, you become lost in nightmare realms, you are forced to bear children, and so many other things. This is all because of forced evolution, trying to skip ahead to where we want to be instead of focusing on where we are. Everything I just said is later effects of the blood, things that happen because the scholars and clerics pushed to hard in their research and beliefs. But what did they ignored something amazing about this blood. It cures people. One of the first facts we learn about the blood is its restorative properties. It cures illnesses, like Gilbert's disease, and it cures terrible (and maybe even otherwise fatal) wounds, like those experienced by the hunter repeatedly. The blood is a magical cure all potion like out of a fantasy. It is these curative powers that made yharnam so wealthy and so full of people at one point. Imagine if in our world if we discovered this blood, all ailments cured, every injury fixable. It would be a miracle, so many could be helped so easily. The discovery of the old blood was a wonderful thing that had at first no terrible side effects. However because of the power hungry nature of humans, that was not enough. The scholars beckoned the moon to come, and only then did the line between man and beast become blurred. Only when they tried to become gods did madness set into the minds of people. Only when they tried to evolve to godhood did they devolve into beasts. I hope this clarifies why I think evolution is an important aspect of this came to consider, though of course it is not the only theme present.

Hey Skyen, thanks for creating this series. Bloodborne is one of the only games I've ever earned every trophy for, and as deeply as I scoured the nightmare, you went far deeper still, and brought back treasures beyond imagination. I genuinely enjoyed your blind playthrough, your surprise and shocks, the reactions and the triumphs, the persistence and victory against all odds. I wish I'd been as capable with a cane during my own playthrough! Your analysis was incredible, truly spectacular. You seem to see everything in an important, highlighting aspect that brings to the forefront subtle points that might go overlooked - I never ever realised the Orphan of Kos wields a fouled fish-hook as a weapon! - and present your observations in an engaging, accessible, and very human manner. This series really rekindled a new, exciting interest in the game, for me and I'm sure for countless other viewers. Not only that, your editing and comedic timing was exceptional throughout. All the little speech bubbles, the Git Gud counter for deaths, the smash cuts and Marx jumps, the Make Contact TranceWave Party segment, all that and more, elevated this from an interesting series to an engaging and entertaining one. I have no further comment, really, beyond thank you, well done, and I hope you enjoyed making this as much as we enjoyed watching it. I'll watch your channel with interest going forward :)

I got into this series because I had watched a bunch of your shorts where you analyzed the bosses and the ones on Lady Maria and the Doll were the ones to have hooked me enough that I started watching. I absolutely adored the series as someone who had not known much about bloodborne but had an aesthetic appreciation for it. I found your insight and analysis of the bosses incredibly fascinating and I'm 100% sure that I will be revisiting this series a few times in the comes weeks as I loved hearing your analysis of them all! Thank you Skyen for doing this wonderful series!

It's hard to believe this journey is... finally over. It's been a wild ride with all sorts of twists and turns and well is something I will cherish... And while I know there is more to see and do especially with Elden Ring now out and soon will begin in about an hour of writing this... it's still sad to see it go. And while you don't think you made the landing Skyen, I still believe it to be a wonderful sendoff to this series. And I'm happy I got to take it with you, walking by your side till the end. (Especially since I got to be in the final episode technically since you had the Queen Yharnam footage.) And I now wish you luck as you go forth from this dream/nightmare and begin to seek Grace.

How do you stop violence? Well, the problem with that question is that the answer is... Having power. In order to be consodered "docile" you need the ability to do violence. If you don't have the ability to do violence to begin with you are not docile, you are harmless. You can think about the "peace" we have in the real world, that was only achieved through mutually assured destruction. If a nuclear bomb goes down, everyone else also goes down, that sort of thing... But on a more bright, and more personal view, you can read it as meaning that the cure for the cycle of violence is forgiveness. Having the power to get revenge and making the choice of not doing it is what ultimately breaks those cycles and brings peace to the world

I love the moon presence's 1HP attack so much it's basically forcing you to attack it to recover, baiting you into succumbing to your bloodlust right before the end. it's nowhere near the hardest boss in the game, but it's the "most" bloodborne one, thematically. having the final boss encapsulate the themes of your game this much is really impressive.

I started by watching your design talk about lol characters, loved them so much you made me crave those videos on something more important, consistent, deep... Then I found this series, about my all time favourite game, by you, who made me quiet literally open my eyes about (at least from the videos) designs of character and stuff... Not just this, but also the analysis and gameplay part well divided by your "masks", if you'll pass me this term, to keep both of them entertaining and interesting to watch... You made me re-experience this game in a way I wouldn't have been able to, not by far, and I hope I'll be able to thanks you enough for that one day. By the deep of my dry heart, this helped me a real lot, which is wierd since it's a thick and heavy cosmic horror, but you got the point

I loved this series a lot, so much so that I actually rewatched the whole thing, and the entirety of the unedited streams, just a couple weeks ago, and doing so spurred me to strike up a Co-Op run with my friend, in which we did the whole game again, DLC & Chalices included (I make new characters and play them to completion on all the soulsborne games constantly, but it was his first time playing it again since the year after it came out) and it was a blast! And what I mean to say is, this series, just as the other Boss Design's did before it, brings me so much joy, and it reaches further into my life than just watching the video; it leaves me thinking about the games in new and deeper ways, it drives me to play them in slower and more analytical ways, and in this latest instance, it provided me an opportunity to spend quality time with a dear friend and for us to both re-experience something we love together, and you wouldn't believe the amount of times I talked to him about the analyses from this series in particular as we played. I will rewatch it again, as I have before, and every time the opening plays, I will smile. And that's an incredibly special thing for you to have created, and something deserving of incredible pride. Thank you ^_^

The "lack of a single clear meaning" actually really resonated with me, for some reason; it's a thing that can be perceived, but not all of it at the same time, and since we're talking MENTAL not VISUAL perception, we don't have the words for it as a coherent whole, but you can still "feel" it.

Geez this series is so good and this episode in particular is awesome. So much work went into this series and you can tell. The game play, the editing, the commentary…thank you. You also really went above and beyond talking us through all your theories on the meaning of Bloodborne. I understand not being able to settle on just one of them, there was a lot going on and I only watched these videos and not the hours upon hours of gameplay I’m sure went into this. I’ve never been interested in playing any Dark Souls games and know next to nothing about them other than they’re very challenging to play, so I’m sure it took forever. Your analyses and your theories in every video were fantastic and despite my lack of general Dark Souls knowledge, everything was so well put together and explained that I didn’t feel out of the loop on what was being discussed. It also seemed well researched with references to historical events, religions, and cultures which was particularly interesting and felt very comprehensive. This series was such a pleasure to watch and I’m so glad I found your channel. Thanks for all your hard work! On a related note, I’m having trouble finding the wrap up video that was referenced - the one with the essay submissions. Does anyone know where I can find it? If it’s still being worked on (which is understandable with 100+ submissions and I don’t know what TB Skyen does for a living, but likely not this full time), please don’t come for me, I just want to watch it and am too stupid to find it apparently.

There is another way to get the third coil, because there are technically four thirds, though only 3 are needed for the "secret" ending. If you go to the clinic after killing Rom, and kill Iosefka, she drops another third coil. Though yes, the game does push you to kill Arianne, in that Iosefka's cord is missable, and there isnt much direction to push you there
