Geerhardus Vos and the Covenant of Works

Danny Olinger delivers an address at the 2021 Reformed Forum Theology Conference. The event was held October 8-9, 2021 at Providence OPC in Pflugerville, Texas.
The conference theme was, “The Promise of Life: God’s Plan for His People in the Covenant of Works.” In contrast to Roman Catholic, modernist, and evangelical approaches, we explored a thoroughly Reformed understanding of God’s relationship to Adam as he was created. We learned how Jesus Christ ultimately brings us to the glorious future which God originally offered to Adam in the garden of Eden.
Danny Olinger is General Secretary for the Committee on Christian Education of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He is the author of Geerhardus Vos: Reformed Biblical Theologian, Confessional Presbyterian and the editor of A Geerhardus Vos Anthology: Biblical and Theological Insights Alphabetically Arranged.

This blew my little mind. I've been struggling to get a wider angle on the covenant of works. The eschatological approach and the contrast with donum superadditum is so amazingly helpful. Thank you.

What connection was Danny making between Lutheranism's emphasis on justification (vs. Calvin's emphasis on God's glory), Lutheranism's missing perserverance of the saints, and the active obedience of Christ? How is Lutheranism corrected in a proper understanding of the Covenant of Works.? Is it that the imputation of Christ's active obedience takes us beyond his passive obedience (COG, Genesis 3:15). Christ's active obedience fulfills the requirement of the COW to bring us to Genesis 2 Sabbath rest?

For the Lutheran the ultimate question is, "What must I do to be saved?" For the Calvinist the ultimate question is, "How do I glorify God?" In other words, Lutheranism is man-centered in its focus and not God-centered. Lutheran theology, as I understood Danny, simply wants sin removed and sees a return to the garden as the final destination for man. Whereas Calvinism wants to move beyond on the garden because of the active obedience of Christ. I think what you said is correct. I would also add: This has real practical implications too. A constant Calvinist sins and then repentance and looks to the glory of God and does not wallow in morbid introspection. A consistent Lutheran sins and then repentance and keeps looking back to his sin in morbid introspection. A Calvinist has the joy of looking forward to something better than the garden-state.

I just have not been able to determine the article and book that Dr. Olinger is referring to at 12:40. Can anyone provide more information on the reference?

The title is "Hebrews, the Epistle of the Diatheke." It appears in the book, Redemptive History and Biblical Interpretation: the Shorter Writings of Geerhardus Vos.

I wonder if union with Christ is part of Vos' eschatological view of man....

After the fall, of course, but not before the fall.

Returning to the Garden means being able to access The Tree of LIFE which leads to Eternal LIFE. Lord Jesus is the Truth, Way & LIFE. He is the Seed of the Woman, Root of Judah & Fruits of the Spirit which obviously means He's also the TREE OF LIFE. He's the proverbial Holy Grail which is the vessel containing The Wine of God. Jesus planted the Good Seed at Calvary. We are the Earth. Repentance prepares & softens the SOUL. And abiding Faith is the Fertilizer to bear much Fruit so we may finally eat of it (our daily bread = the Word = Christ Spirit). That's the best news ever. Even a child can understand. Bc God's Covenant of Peace & Grace is for all Adam's GENErations. Cain's GENErations (Caananites) need not apply bc they are children OF the other Tree (1John 3:12). "If My people who are called by My name (Christ Seed = son of man & son of God) will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land (EL + DNA)." 2Chronicles 7:14 NKJV. If you want big ideas to chew on, look up Quantum Fusion. That s what happened on Calvary. Jesus was playing 5D chess. Like downloading an Uber app on your CELL phone, all humans received The God Gene Particle. And Leprosy mysteriously seems to have gone extinct. Even after His death & ascension, Jesus continued to heal the sick & forgive the sinners. What a glorious God we serve. King of Kings & Lord of Lords forever & ever Amen ❤
