Awesome that's a sweet setup! I've tried doing something similar by running my Nord through Mainstage first to use plugin effects and shaping tools, but by the time it got to FOH it was super noisy... Have you come across those types of issues? Maybe it's just a low noise floor on the interface's preamps? (I'm sure the MOTUs are pretty clean). Let me know if you have any ideas, thanks!

When you said switch over incase something happens on the laptop. There is a switch on the nord for deciding which to output to send sound through? Or the sound engineer just keeps the fader up but muted as a backup?

Love this btw! I'm glad I see similarities in our setups to let me know I'm doing something right. I do have a question though that I've been wondering for along time now. Why if your Motu 8A has balanced outputs, do you use a DI such as the Radial Pro D8? I understand if you're trying to switch from 1/4 " TRS to XLR to send to FOH, but if so, that's quite the expense just to convert to XLR seeing that it's $800. Just wondering because I've seen similar setups and am puzzled why it's there other than because you're willing to drop almost a lot of money on it.

  • @blackbackLP

Had the same question some time ago when i thought about upgrading my gear. I think, even if your interface does have balanced output, there are valid reasons for using an DI box. First of all, an DI gives you isolated outputs. This can be very useful in certain situations. Secondly, it prevents your interface from phantom power and such. In addition to that, it gives you a central location for all your outputs and those plugs on the Pro D8 are a lot more rigid than those on some audio interfaces but this only makes sense if you pre-wire all your gear in an rack. I think they do it because they can. Radials are really good and 8 of them in a rackmounted box is a lot more practical than a couple loose single channel DIs. It also gives you a practical way of rackmounting your DIs and some headroom for future instruments and channels.

That's a 10 -year-old Stage 2 he is using. Even with stage 3, your options for atmospheric pads or unique piano samples are limited vs the Keyscape library. The last thing to note - they are a big band where each keyboard player has a precise role to fill in the overall sound. My own playing technique and sound selections are vastly different when I worship within a 4-piece and a 8/10-piece band setting.

@@eugeneprystupa5075 I understand greatly, but still believe it's overkill for a small church set up... If midi is primary I would go for a more cost efficient board that sounds great and can be used in a pinch if midi failed but I just can't see the purpose of spending so much on a nord and use midi I'd rather spend the extra from saving on a cheaper board on more vst and sounds

@@musictheorist8151 I see your point! Most churches who want the Nord sound would probably do equally fine with Piano 5 or Electro 6D since very few players that I’ve seen actually use any real time controls/effects/etc. You could get a modx8 or something similar as a controller/piano for less, too. I am sure that these guys bring their own rigs to the mix. My “language” is Nord/korg synths. I can play the Sunday service on any other instrument as a guest musician, but I will bring my own setup if I am on rotation since I know my own tools much-much better.
