The nuts on the ladder should be lock nuts, so it doesn't really matter that they're not cinched down. I don't own one yet, but I used to work in a machine shop where parts like this needed the freedom of movement but also needed to be secured, and nylon lock nuts do the job just fine. If they aren't lock nuts, definitely replace them with some.

Awesome review… so far after looking …this is my choice… had started by looking at ikamper mini 3.0 and a similar one from RoofNest but with each coming in at btw $3400 to $3900 (yikes) with really the only major difference being those are hard-shell tents vs using a soft cover like yours I’m at a loss why the $2k surcharge for a cover! Lol. My only concern and question for you is any way of securing this tent with locks while it sits atop the roof? Granted I would probably only leave on when I’m venturing out… but even those hours at work would leave me wondering….

At the end you mention the awning supports getting bent under tension. Is this superficial damage or could it eventually compromise their function?

They were slightly bent. They have to bend anyway, but after a lot of use they don't go 100% back to straight like when they were new. I wouldn't call it damage. They still work perfectly fine. It hasn't compromised their function.

how does it perform in windy conditions + heavy wind/rain? Can you pull up the ladder once you're up top? thanks for the review.

It was solid through a couple of thunderstorms in the midwest. Never had any leaks in the rain. I drove through bad weather more than I camped in it and the cover did not let water in while driving. It weighs about 100 pounds plus it's anchored by the car so it's sturdy in the wind. You cannot pull the ladder up while you are using the tent because the ladder supports one side.

Could you comment on the weather you endured using the tent? Did you stay in the CA area, or did the tent stand up to more wet climates as well? Any problems with condensation?

I was in CA a lot. But I used the tent in rainy/foggy weather in other areas and there wasn't much condensation inside. Just make sure the gaps near the hinge are covered. The ventilation is good since the openings can be pulled down but allows air to escape. I can't speak for using it in the rain for more than two nights though.

Could you add a thicker mattress and leave bedding on the bed when you fold it back up?

I sometimes left my blankets inside and the tent still folded up but I noticed the extra thickness can make it a little tight to close. As for a thicker mattress: if it compresses well then you can probably get away with a couple inches of extra thickness. It would probably have to be custom cut from foam to fit well.

which crossbars do you have? Just ordered the Ayer 2 for my Subaru as well and have read that the stock crossbars won't work

I have the yakima jetstream and they work fine despite the teardrop shape. I would recommend square bars if possible for a better fit with the brackets, but any crossbar should work if it's rated for the weight. Not sure what you mean by "stock". Are you talking about the factory crossbars on the outback?

Have you used this in 20 & 30 degree night temps? If so how warm does it keep you?

Thanks for watching. I did use this on a few nights with temperatures around 30F and got away with a 20F sleeping bag. It's not insulated (other than the mattress) although the tent material holds in heat decently if you zip it up. I would treat it as if it were a regular tent and insulate your sleeping area accordingly. Add a sleeping pad or blanket on top of the mattress if you need to and a warm sleeping bag/blanket(s) should do the trick.

It's very sturdy in the wind since it's anchored to the car. No more noise than any ordinary tent; the wind didn't bother me even through a few storms. The material is thick so it shields from the wind well. You can seal it up fairly tight if it's windy to minimize any drafts.

Does this have enough room for let's say two people around 5'5" and 2 50 pound pups

For this particular model I don't think you will be very comfortable. I would treat the dogs as an extra person and say you would need a 3 person tent. I was considering a bigger tent and the Kukenam 3 is what I would go with: tepui.com/products/thule-tepui-explorer-kukenam-3 amzn.to/3p35mf5. It's a few hundred dollars more but a lot more space that you will be grateful for.

The Ayer 2 is 95 pounds I believe. I set it up with my dad. It's a two man job to install. It works on a Rav4 as long as you have a roof rack. I have seen RAV4s on the road with RTTs.

What kind of roof rack do you have?

Yes, but it depends how big the 2 occupants are and how much extra space you want. Its roughly the size of a full size bed. If you want more space, the kekunam 3 is larger model I considered: amzn.to/3eb24iM

How loud is that going down the road?

Not bad. Louder on the highway (>65mph) than at lower speeds but not terrible. The loss in gas mileage is more noticeable than the noise.

@@exploresinc I bet it keeps you from driving over 65, which in turn probably help gas mileage enough that you end up with a smaller efficiency loss. Better on the car engine also possibly.
