Gear Review | Primus Omni Fuel Another Year of daily use

After replacing the burner I have another year of daily use on the Omni Fuel with primarily alkylite as fuel base... fireing it up twice a day puts a lot of hours on this thing and it just keeps on going.
A few things you gotta check once in a while and as you will see...
wonderig why it was flaming so much? there was some water down there. usually it will take much less time to fire it up. i just wanted to include it to show that it can take some time, once in a while... same acounts when the system is in need of cleaning...
i will have to do a full cleaning with brake cleaner now... Always good to do, before you´re heading out on longer camping trips.
Dont forget to buy the spare box for it...

    Hello, Philipp! I want to say that I also used omnifuel for more than 360 days and I had exactly the same problems, except for breaking off the brass heat exchanger. During the entire time of use, I replaced two fuel hoses due to a leaky joint, one leather cuff, one threaded rod with a needle. And from the very beginning I replaced the aluminum rod of the pump with one made of stainless steel, because aluminum was often covered with scratches. Who goes on a long-distance route with primus omnifuel, I recommend that you definitely take a spare fuel hose with you. It is also better to convert the pump stem to stainless steel. I noticed that in the most recent version of primus omnifuel, you only need to make one revolution to close the needle. I think it's very small. In the 2006 version, the needle rod can be rotated more than five revolutions - this is good, because when carbon deposits accumulate in the evaporation chamber, then you have to open the needle more than usual. I think when using gasoline 95, the newest version of omnifuel needs to be cleaned more often than older versions, which have a larger free stroke of the needle stem. But I did not check it, but only assume - just one turn of the needle seems to me an unreliable solution. Despite all the problems, primus omnifuel is the best burner (the old versions are for sure), I think so, because there are two valves in its design, and other manufacturers have only one valve and this is very inconvenient. Also, it is relatively easy to find spare parts for this burner. In the case of other burners, most often the only way to get spare parts is to buy several burners at once and disassemble some of them for spare parts. Thank you for sharing your experience! Good luck!)

    Primus doesn't recommend to use regular gasoline, because it's cancerogen. It has to be "chemically clean" gasoline.

    The issue with the "shitty attachment" of the pump is fairly normal. The gaskets around the pump connector dry out and wear out. You can replace/maintain them by opening the little screw and lifting up the silver locking tab. Then you can pull out the connector, and either re-grease the gasket with silicone grease or change it and grease it. It should recover its tightness. Just remember the screw is in plastic, so try to find the old thread before screwing it in, and "easy does it". On really early ergo-pumps (with black top and bottom), the locking tab was held by a pin behind the connector rather than a screw, and could not be dismantled. These older models had 2 gaskets and when they did wear, leaving your pump leaky. You can McGyver the repair, but it's not easy (best being to drill the pin out with a column drill and replace it with something removable. I made a clip from piano wire) As for the pump's leather cup, if you wipe (I use a baby wipe) and re-lube it regularly, you may almost never need to change it (my Omnifuel, while not seeing as regular use as yours, has the same one for 20 years now...) Finaly, your remark about lack of power when bottle nears empty: liquid fuel is nearly incompressible, while air is VERY compressible. That means that you need to pump in increasingly large amount of air when the fuel level reduce. It's not linear. Lack of power just means you did not build enough pressure in the bottle, so get pumping. Having to pump 50x, 70x or more in a nearly empty bottle is perfectly normal. :)

    In my opinion, the best part of that entire system is the Eta pot. I have the 1L and the 1.8L, and am desperately searching for the 3L. Unfortunately, they discontinued the bigger pots, and I can't for the life of me understand why. They're the absolute best heat exchanger pots - fantastic non-stick, efficient, with a perfect lid. I myself use a Soto Stormbreaker (mainly with white gas, but also propane). I have an MSR XGK primarily for expeditions where the stove can't fail (ie. above the treeline), but have been interested in the Omnifuel TI for the weight savings. Great video. :)

  • @philippbergau5868

    @philippbergau5868

    I agree, regarding the pot. 3l is really what you need for winter use. Everything else is just annoying to use. I have to get myself a new lid, since I was stupid enough to put it on top of a still warm stove. It melted down. But it's still usable. I had my hands on a Soto and tried it out a couple years ago. Really solid Japanese stove. The MSR is of course, the Golden Standard. But given the lack of customer service, I kinda wanna stick with the primus. Also, I mean, it runs 😜

  • @GordLamb

    @GordLamb

    Heh, yeah the 3L must be so nice. The 1.8L is enough to fill my 1.4L Nalgene in one shot and can just barely fit my stove, wind screen, cutlery, water/coffee filter and maintenance kit but it's always a game of tetris. The Stormbreaker is crazy powerful (rated 3.5kW/12kBTU/h) and soot-free, but takes some practice to start. Not bad for the owner, but I'm always wary when someone else wants to operate it; if you cut over from the start position too soon, it leaks liquid fuel which then ignites immolating the whole stove, lol. And it takes way longer than you'd expect to prime it from a cold start below -20C, and sometimes even multiple attempts repressurizing the fuel bottle if there's not enough air gap. Still, it melts snow like an absolute beast, and runs great on propane down to about -25C. Having said that, it is fairly complex and I wouldn't trust my life to it (hence the XGK). But that Primus does look awesome.

I just thought that it would be interesting to see someone else's opinion on it. I think it's a great stove. 3 years into using it (at least 550 times), and it's still going strong. I think that if you take care of it, it's a stove that will last at least a decade.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. What type of fuel are you using? I recently saw pressure leaks on a friend's pump. But I only a video and when I checked it last year he had some weird fuel mx in there. Potentially methanol in it. Which would break down seals. He also left the new fuel in there for a year. So who's to say who is at fault here 😜

    @@philippbergau5868 I've used quite a few different fuels, whatever's available! Mainly I've used Primus Powerfuel or Coleman liquid fuel, so purified petrol. But I've also used LPG canisters, petrol from a car that I siphoned when I run out, and I've used diesel a few times! And it has run absolutely perfectly with every fuel, thanks to the different jet nipples. The only parts I've ever needed to replace are the leather gasket in the pump (3 times) and I've needed to replace the rubber o-ring once. Hahaha I think you're right! Methanol will definitely break down the seals and it seems like the fuel leak was due to that. But I still find it amazing how many different fuels you can use in it- I was so surprised that diesel worked just as well as purified petrol.

It absolutely sucks when you're trying to cook with an LPG canister even when it's 0°C, let alone °-15C, and I love how the omnifuel and its liquid fuel system not only doesn't matter at that temperature, but it's also easy to run gasoline at that temp!
