Kaido is sort of in deep depression. the drinking, the crying, the suicidal attempts. he has not enjoyed life for many years and at this point was only looking to end it all in a glorious fashion. kinda hard to laugh when you are that deep in depression, even when faced with a goofy luffy.

Honestly one of the criticisms of post time skip is that it's too serious, no seriousness at all would be bad, but hopefully it goes back to early One Piece with rare but meaningful serious moments.

@@robbiemedica2652 Fr in pre time skip even in the most serious of fights like Luffy vs Crocodile, there are still moments like water Luffy. In post time skip we never got moments like that. With G5, stakes can still be very high and the tones can be serious still but goofy moments are still allowed and on top of that they will be more natural because it's simply a part of Luffy's devil fruit

In gear 2, Luffy pumped his blood to become faster. In gear 3, Luffy pumped his bone with air so it became giant. In gear 4, Luffy pumped his muscles with air (You can check for yourself if you search gear 4, you'll see his muscles). And finally gear 5, he uses his imagination as will.

The whole point of Gear 5 is designed to be cartoony, Oda said that it was inspired by Tom and Jerry. Saying he thought making transformations "always serious" gets boring. And he wanted to make a transformation that actually is original but also, same with the power up as well Gear 5 breaks the cliches of typical anime transformations Do people don't get bored seeing cool, super serious badass fights in anime?! Oda took the risk for Gear 5, he said that he don't want his manga to be serious. And he just go with it, in Gear 5

A lot of people miss the point. This is not Luffy being disrespectful or weird, one of the weaknesses of the awakened form is he becomes goofy and easily distracted. He has trouble focusing on his goal whenever he transforms and while he does become very powerful he tends to waste a lot of time and takes hits he could have dodged if he was serious. It’s pretty interesting and very reminiscent of The Mask with Jim Carrey, goofy power that affects his surroundings and makes him very formidable, but the side effect is he loses a bit of himself when under its effects.

Btw Oda has said if another person had any other Devil Fruit how their powers work would be different the original users going from level to Sabo incorporating his dragons fist fighting style into the flare flare too damn near changing what the fruit does entirely all that to say it's because Luffy has this fruit that it's goofy and cartoony if somebody else like Doffy or Blackbeard had it they would be more like Thanos erasing ppl just by snapping there fingers

In this episode, however, they also adapted the first 2 pages of the following chapter, this episode in fact corresponds to chapter 1045 and the last minutes of the episode are the first 2 pages of chapter 1046.
