GE Pro Long Range Attic Outdoor TV Antenna 29884 Review

Ғылым және технология

This is my review of the GE Pro Outdoor/Attic TV antenna. It runs about $35 and claims reliable reception within 70 miles of the broadcast towers. It's marketed as an attic antenna but how well does it work?

I have the GE roof mounted. It does pretty well. It pulls in 45 channels or so reliably and 59 in perfect conditions. I've had it up about a year and a half with no issues yet. As you mentioned, it probably won't last 25 years but for $40 its fine. I liked it because its not huge and obnoxious looking up on the roof.

You should do an 'antenna board' like Top Gear did for cars. Have it in your videos and as you test new units you can place a placard for that antenna on the board in order of over all value.

I kid you not, I just installed this antenna for shits and giggles about 2 weeks ago. I live in a rural area with some pretty large old growth trees blocking my optimal direction. The rabbit ears this replaced were pulling in about 15 channels with 2 that were troublesome. I mounted the GE antenna in the attic, ran the line to the basement and hit a four way. No pre-amp, no booster, nothing. I now get 52 channels and not a single channel with issues. One channel is around 68% the rest are all at least 80%. I couldn't be happier with this antenna. What turned out to just be a test to see how well it would receive in the attic, turned out amazing. I get several crystal clear channels out of Detroit which is about 65 miles away. Never thought for a second that I would give a $39 antenna a 10/10.

yes, This GE is one of the best antenna for picking on lots of stations from different angles. You point the elements to your weakest stations and it able to pull in the rest.

@@jamesm568 A pre-amp is used to deal with a long cable run from the antenna to your junction area or single TV set. In this case, the signal strength is great enough that not only did I not need a pre-amp, and I was also able to feed 4 TVs out of a 4 way without any real noticeable loss. It also has nothing to do with the antenna and everything to do with attenuation loss. The reason your channel master pre-amp gave you trouble, was because you were over-driving the signal.

I got great reception with a piece of cardboard slightly bigger that the antenna, then covering it with aluminum foil. Then I mounted it behind the antenna. It improved the reception a lot. Keep up your great work! Mike

Just connected this antenna on our roof in the suburban SF Bay Area. It works perfectly. I didn't connect a pre-amp and patched together the cables left hanging from two old satellite antennae. Still, the antenna pulled in over 100 channels, more than twice what I expected. Yes, there are some far-away stations that suffer from clipping audio but I hadn't expected to receive these at all. Picture and audio quality of our local channels are absolutely perfect. Thanks to Antenna Man for all the sound advice around over-the-air TV reception.

Have installed a number of these for friends and family in the Las Vegas area. We get great reception and around 80 channels. They work fine for us out to about 40 miles (that's as far as I've installed them from the transmitter site). We'll have to see how they hold up with the sun out here, but so far so good after 4 years. In three installs these have replaced satellite dishes and used the old mounting poles. The size is perfect for that. Not every situation works for large antennas, but as always, go with as large as fits.

I have the attic antenna mounted into the bottom of a window with the booster as well. Without the booster I get 36 channels, with it I get between 36 & 52 channels depending on time of day. Overall I'm happy with it & it beats paying a monthly cable bill!

I have the GE 33692, which looks identical to the 29884 reviewed in this video at nearly the same price (I bought at around $25 with a Chase card promo 2 years ago, but it's currently $35). It replaced the $100 Antennas Direct ClearStream 4 that my parents had before it. With the ClearStream 4, the signal would always be briefly scrambled whenever a car passed by the house (radio or cellular interference is my guess) but with the GE 33692 my family has been very happy so far with no interference from passing cars. Signal quality for the majority of channels also improved by about 10-15% overall. We live approximately 25 miles from the broadcasting stations in southern California.

Nice review, Tyler - right on the mark. I have this antenna (a slightly older model, actually; the UHF elements are a slightly different shape), and I mounted it in my attic. I think that the relative lightness of the build is the reason to classify this as an 'attic' antenna. I agree with you that it is unlikely to last very long out in the elements. It is a pretty good match for my location and circumstances, since the TV stations around me are clustered to the West and to the East, from about 15 to 45 miles away without much in the way of hills in between. I aimed it East to get the stations I wanted most, and it picks up the stations to the West fine as well with the signal coming in from the back of the antenna. I get about 60 channels, and chose to ignore fully half of them (I don't personally need shopping networks, Spanish language stations, and religious broadcast stations). Like you point out, there is no perfect antenna because everyone's circumstances are different. This antenna works for me, and for the $35 I paid for it I am satisfied.

i also have an earlier version of this antenna and picked up 2 of them at a big box store on closeout for like 8 bucks each. on yt here i learned how to make a reflector from cage wire and did so for both. for what it's worth i get 50 + channels, however i am very close to chicago in a small village near the big airport. unless i get into a rare flight pattern in my immediate area reception is good. oh btw- i live in a garden apartment so not a basement nor a 1st floor. for what it's worth both antennas do the job on a small bedroom set as well as a bigger tv in my living room. looks a little weird, however does the job. thanks for reviewing this product. enjoy your channel!

I ordered this antenna and received it a few days ago. Took about 20 minutes to assemble. I intend to put it in my attic but temps are in the high 80's so I'll delay that until fall. Anyway, I placed the antenna on a top shelf of a second story closet (on an outside wall) and pointed it due south toward Indianapolis (37 mi, flat terrain). I am receiving 26 channels, crystal clear, from the Indy area and a CBS affiliate station from Lafayette, IN which is due west of me (26 mi). I may not even put it in the attic after all. Well worth the $35 I paid for it.

Seen that GE antenna at my local Walmart. My home was built in the late 1980s. The 'attic" or more like an upper crawl space has styrofoam with aluminum or metal on it. The metal blocks out most of the signals. It even reduces FM radio reception. My cell phone also works better outside.

03/18/23 - Installed the GE 29884-7 antenna today. I live in a rural area 60 miles south of downtown Chicago. I mounted the antenna on the roof using the old satellite dish mount and cable. There are several trees and a large hill in my immediate line of sight. Despite those obstacles and without a booster, I am able to pick up 54 of the 60 channels that are supposed to be within range. WBBM/CBS is very pixelated, but WLS/ABC WGN WTTW WCIU WFLD/FOX come in perfectly. Apparently WBBM/CBS is broadcast via a High VHF signal which requires an antenna with several horizontal sections on a horizontal plane (such as a Channel Master CM-3671 Ultra-Hi Crossfire or Channel Master Pro-Model UHF/VHF), as well as a tall antenna tower and a clear line of sight. So far I am pleasantly surprised with the performance of this little antenna, and satisfied with my purchase.

Edited for clarity. I bought this antenna and at 60 miles away from most of my UHF stations, it's working perfect... but... it did leave me wanting a vhf lo mod for this antenna. I did due to the local channel WHDF that operates on VHF 2 which is only 25 miles away so I was kinda hoping it would just work anyway... looked and looked, but could not find one single mod online... so I decided to try my hand at something I hadn't done since my CB days... make a mod from scratch. A quick mod test was a must at first before any destructive activity so I took an old set of rabbit ears I had laying around and borrowed the telescoping tubes... after extracting them from the rabbit ears base (2 screws, super easy) I zip tied the rabbit ears on the VHF dipole in the back of the antenna about 3/4 the way out from the center of the GE Pro... came back inside and voila I was picking up channel 2. I then went up and adjusted the length of the "extensions" by sliding them in the zip ties until I had the best reception and noted the length... Having had proof on concept, I bought some aluminum tubing much like the GE Pro is made out of... set the new tubes up with zip ties at first, set the length, tested and then put a couple small stainless steel clamps on. Then a bit of drilling along with a tiny bolt/nut combo and I had my final product. (the drilling/bolt nut combo was to ensure connection integrity.) Honestly, I probably could have left the rabbit ear tubes zip tied up there for years before any issues... I've done jankier stuff in the past with antennas. FYI, this is a temporary antenna until I can afford to replace my tower that had a large VIP 307 VHF antenna that originally was installed to pick up stations over 100 miles away and my old UHF channel master 4228 UHF... all 3 were destroyed in a storm this spring....rotor is still good though...

I'll agree on the build. Bought this antenna from Walmart. It admittedly does feel very flimsy. But it's a good deal for $40, plus West Texas doesn't generally have really harsh weather outside of summer monsoon season and the rare winter freeze so it will last me for awhile, at least until I move out of my RV and into my own house.

I have been getting great results with antenna mounted indoors. I'm shocked. I bought because I found an open box one for $25 and thought I try it. In my area UNC-TV(NC's public broadcaster) moved to new tower that is a problem for me because of the surrounding mountains. Plus their directional antenna has a null to the west in my direction. This is the only antenna I tried that will get a stable signal from them. They are on UHF channel 20. There are four VHF stations in my market, three have strong singal. It picks up all of them. I sometimes get a few glitches on the CBS station whose tower is located 49 miles from my house. The fourth is on VHF channel 2. This antenna is only designed to get VHF channels 7-13 and will not pick up that station. No great loss. It's a relgious station. The only channel I'd like to be to recieve from them is Quest.

I'm south of Buffalo and 64 miles straight line from CN Tower in Toronto. This antenna on a good signal day can pull in CFTO VHF 8 and CBLT UHF 20 in my attic. It also has fairly decent omidirectional reception with the local Buffalo stations closer by. The RCA Yagi does a little better job all around. A Hoverman antenna I constructed from 8awg copper wire with four rear reflectors and two VHF reflectors is far superior with both the distant Toronto VHF and UHF where I can pull those stations with a 80% reliability. Only the snowiest of days does it not work well. CHCH is exactly 90 degrees from my aim, the Yagi can grab it and the Hoverman needs a great day with optimal conditions, the GE is 50/50 depending on the day.

This antenna works well for UHF stations at about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. Most major transmitters are located on Mt Wilson at between 50-60 miles distance with a pretty clear LOS. It's mounted on the eave of a 2nd floor roof. However, there's one VHF channel that's further south and only about 10 miles away that it doesn't pick up consistently. I'm going to try an antennas direct VHF kit on the same mast to see if I can pick it up. It's a simple dipole with a combiner. My question is, is a dipole directional? Do I aim the center of the spread out arms in the direction of the tower?

I had that antenna that was dropped, it worked fair until it rained. It has built in preamp, but water gets in the holes and gets on preamp board. Its kind of hard to mount. Uses the wierd rotator thst you never know what direction it will rotate. I thew mine away, used the same antenna he is talking about, put s preamp on mine and it performs quite well, im very happy at what performance the ge antenna has.a store was closing them out and i got 3. My opinion, the antenna performs very well for the price.

Hey Tyler! Sure am glad that you are doing this type of video. It really helped me when I updated my antenna. One question, when you compare the antenna in the video to the last two, you talk about diffraction and one edge, two edge and line of sight to the transmitters. Is that referring to terrain barriers like mountains, hills and ridges between the transmitter and the antenna? Thanks!

I am so glad to know there's no such thing as a HD antenna its drilled in my brain when I do get my next one. I am considering the omni directional one by Channel Master it looks sturdy but it is small .Would it be quite sufficient ? I live in the Toronto area north of Lake Ontario and all the channels come across there from the western NY area. It doesn't have a amp built in . I do have a channel master preamp the 7778 one .Not using it as of now but when getting another antenna( passive ) one I like to use that again.

I had 1 like this from big lots for 25 bucks. It worked pretty good for bout a year or so till the south florida sun baked the plastic and it started to break but other then that I was happy. I got one now with the 4 big black circles on it and it's not as good. So I bought this one till I'm ready to spend over a hundred bucks for the monster sized wineguard 6ft long one. I live in vero bch fl and have to point it at west palm beach. Fox comes in at night but during the day it doesn't so hope this new one helps for. Wish me luck

Just purchased this one last week to see if it would perform better than the Clearstream Max-V that I have in the attic. The GE did not perform as well. It picked up fewer channels, and also seemed to have a more directional pickup pattern...so some of the channels became fringe, especially one on VHF. I'm 40 miles from most transmitter sites and have to go through some tall trees. If someone is closer to transmitters, this antenna might work fine for them.

I just bought this antenna from Wallyworld. My first antenna was the $11 one with a $12 amp, both from Onn at Walmart. I got 16 perfectly clear channels with that setup. I didn’t think I could get any more channels because I’m in the mountains in central PA. I just installed this GE antenna and got the same 16 channels with better strength, plus 6 new channels from Pittsburgh. Those transmissions are a 67-mile straight line to my house. I can receive those six extra channels just fine now, but I still need the amp installed to use them. I’m sure there are better antennas, but I don’t want to piss of the HOA with a giant antenna on my roof. Even though there are supposedly laws to prevent them from stopping me, I can understand it from a neighbor’s perspective. This little one fits neatly in the corner of my top deck, mounted the the deck floor behind the banister.

Question: I have an antenna which works well. We just moved and the new home lacks a bunch of coax. The antenna connects to Coax. If I connected a MoCa 2.5 transmitter to the antenna, do you think it would work to send the digital signal wirelessly across the home to a MoCa 2.5 received plugged into the back of the TV?

I own that same model of antenna and I’ve been very happy with it. I took down a Direct TV antenna, mounted it to the Direct TV mast and connected it to their wiring that they left behind. I’m about 50 miles from most of suburban Houston’s antennas and I pick up over 100 stations after rescanning with a cheap inline RF amplifier. It’s also a little smaller than the Direct TV antenna and not noticeable at all from the outside. Have any of the antennas you’ve tried been able to pick up WBNG, which is not far from your market?

Hello all, I have this antenna. I bought it before I saw this video. But, money spent, I went ahead and installed it. I installed it outdoors on a mast. It works well. Structurally, it's "good but not great." I pull in about 30 channels from about 45 miles away. I figure that if the antenna physically lasts 4 or 5 years, it will more than payed for itself. If and when it dies, I'll get a better antenna. But between then and now, it's saving me $120 a month in cable bills.

We have this antenna in the bedroom closet. Both VHF channels are clean, no break up. UHF channels are also clear and have no breakup. Still need a antenna for the main TV in living room. One VHF station is NNW and the other is SE, the current antenna is a radio shack rabbit ear model 15-1868. UHF signals are good, no break up. The VHF to the SE is good no break up. It's the NNW VHF station that has problems with break up. We live in a manufactured home and no way am I going to drill holes in sidewalls.

I have this antenna for a little while . And it gets excellent signal, picture and quality and gets many many channels up to 65 to 70 ish channels. But now it gets weird as in gets 0 channels and I've tried rescanning it many times and still gets 0 channels.. idk what's wrong with it or do I need new cables or need to adjust it in order to get back all the channels I used to have? What should I do?

I have this antenna and it worked great in my office but it work not so well in its final location (in attic). It seem to start pickup noise and/or interference up there. I ended up using an antenna direct combiner (eu385cf) that seem filter interference with this antenna pointing at 3 VHF stations at 22km NE and another style of antenna for a UHF station at 12KM S.

I've had so many antennas, and surprisingly, the one u call "junk" picked up the most channels but the 'boosters' kept quitting on me and they ARE junk without the boosters. I've had 3 of those... I now have the 'yagi' type but it fails in the rain so I will probably try to add a "booster" of some type for it before it hits the trash along with the others...still beats paying cable prices. Just keep spending $40, here and there trying new ones.
