How long do the knobs normally last when replaced? This is a somewhat common problem with many ge timers. I just disassembled one and oiled it then put a used knob on it with the metal piece in it. The timer turns now but still seems a little stiff. I am not sure if the motors get stiff or if the hams get in a bind from wear.

This was my problem with my GE DRYER also and I cannot thank you enough! Went in to the appliance shop and they gave me a new knob and it is now operating just fine! Just saved me about $600.

Thanks for taking the time to post this. I had this exact problem, and your video helped me determine/verify the cause. I went to my local appliance store and when I mentioned the model number, the lady smiled an brought out a whole bag of replacement knobs and said that it was a common problem. She also mentioned that the knob has been re-engineered to be more sturdy. The replacement I got has a metal collar surrounding the plastic, so I think this one will be more resistant to splits. Had the same problem with my GE Dryer. Found your video after a google search, looked at the knob, and yep - it’s cracked badly. Used some pliers to get the dryer going and ordered myself a new knob. Thank you so much!

Appreciate the video. Something felt stripped, but I couldn't see anything wrong. I looked at the knob with a flashlight after you mentioned the cracks and sure enough, they were there (could barely see them). Very helpful.

Usually replacing the knob is a temporary fix. These timers are notorious for getting too stiff and breaking knobs. You can reinforce the knobs if you use the two part super glue with the powder catalyst. I just fill in the holes around the d shape which makes the knob much stronger.

You can stuff the little compartments around the shaft opening with JB Weld. This potting material will reinforce the structure. It's an effective repair that's better than new, but requires patience filling the little compartments. I used toothpicks and an exact o knife. Perhaps a syringe would do better for filling the compartments but them you have to load the JB Weld into the syringe first.

I’m on my second set of replacement knobs in the last three months. All of the last set broke within three weeks. Are there better replacement knobs available?

Wish i saw this sooner. I started using pliers to get my dryer going not even sure what setting it was on. But now i broke that piece to turn too....whatever that is. Thinking i have to replace the whole timer piece?

My knob is fine, new timer last year but now the metal shaft that attaches to the knob seems to have "fallen" into the dryer.

So i have the GE stackable unit that you have the washer error code videos on. What if the dryer knob is turning the timer but the dryer just keeps going? I got the unit second hand on marketplace and just did my first load. Did a timed dry for an hour before i went to bed. Got up in the morning and it was still going! Dial hadn't moved

We’ve replaced so many and idk what to do. We replaced two and then realized the whole turning part needed fixed so they replaced that completely and we got a brand new knob. It’s been a week and that knob has cracked again!! Idk what to do I want to cry because this keeps happening

Hello I have the identical dryer that your showing with the broken timer knob. Can you please help. I'm on a fixed income. My dryers belt broke so I ordered a new one and replaced it. Then the it still would not start up. So I saw a video and replaced the door switch. Also I cleaned it inside and replaced the exhaust vent also. When the machine is in it is whisper quiet. I also replaced the drum bearing slides. The switch was aftermarket. It wouldn't stay together. So I used some hot glue on the outside of plastic and it held fine. But the dryer timer will not advance and shut down. It just keeps heating on any setting. What could I have done wrong or what is the most probable cause for this. Thank you David

Broke again. 2nd time. Used epoxy on cracks and filled in all the hollow points around where shaft goes for more strength. Slip clip is in good shape. The problem is the timer. Poor design. After a while they get harder and harder to turn. I noticed this a while back. Also, it will not turn flat and level like it used to. When I turn it with pliers, a few times, I could hear the timer was very loud but has never been like that. It does still work though. I will investigate more and try to find an updated, better timer for replacement. In the meantime I will use needle nose vice grips and only run it when I am home. When I find a fix I will post it here. Another problem with this model.. it takes double time to dry lately. I have cleaned the vent. No blockage. I think the heating element is probably going bad also. We have had this model for only 2 years. Next time I will buy another Samsung lasting over 3 years anyway. Never had a problem with that one, just sold it with the last house. Thank GE for that fail, once again.

We had a Maytag washer and dryer over 21 years old the last I saw them. I’ve had my GE’s for four years and think the knob on dryer just broke. Hope that’s all it is.
