Years and years ago when the Goodwill auction site first started not many people were hip to it yet and for $17 I bought a box of nos tubes. From the pics I could see a few tubes that were desirable. When I got them I was more than happy to find 16 black plate 1950's RCA 12ax7's and 27 Amperex Bugle boy 12ax7/ecc83's from holland plus a several RCA 6lq6's. All the tubes were new untouched perfect, I've never been able to get a deal like that again.

I repaired a number of those European sets over the years. Telefunken, Grundig, Majestic, Nordmende, Blaupunkt, Delmonico, etc, etc.... They bore different names, but the chasses were almost completely identical. Early on the service info and schematics were sometimes hard to find, but I usually managed to troubleshoot and repair them without too much difficulty. Power transformer failure was common in these. (IMHO the US was the only country that ever made a decent power transformer. The Euro ones were failure prone.) Also the electrostatic tweeters in some models never worked that well if at all. Another difficult to repair failure involved bad contacts in those push-button switches at the bottom of practically every model made. Some of the sets had the smaller speakers with one large woofer (usually oval) at the bottom of the cabinet. The 2 output tubes were single ended for left and right mids and tweets, and there was a 3rd output transformer for the woofer. The L & R outputs were fed out of phase, and the polarity of the windings compensated for this. The effect was push-pull action for the 3rd (low frequency) transformer. The B+ fed through the center tap of the LF transformer primary, and the plates were connected to the primary ends through the primaries of the HF transformers. Some US manufacturers did this crazy arrangement as well. I never liked that practice. On an old TV set I never took the precaution of ramping up the voltage slowly. Just plug it in turn it on and see what comes up. Life sometimes needs excitement. Cheers!

That;s a decent Garrard record changer in that console.Maybe late 50s just before stereo came in? I think Majestics may have been Garrard/Grundig consoles rebranded for the US market.Cabinet looks shot.Water damage maybe?Probably ony good for an organ donor unit.Southern California is console stereo heaven. So many more there than the rest of the US.

39:40 I wonder if any of these euro sets were ever made with one full range speaker and electrostatic tweeters for left and right channels. That would have been a way to get most of the stereo effect with only one output transformer.

Hey, that CRT could do with some degaussing on the down right corner especially, right? I love the speakers on this, just love the sound of those good, old Celestion and Goodmans speakers :)... And the output tube could be a ELL80, a double output pentode, those were common in stereo radios here. :D

37:30 Sounds as if some oldies station was trying to re-create the '70s AM-radio experience by playing Don Mclean at 48 RPM the way they did it back in the day. That thing has a beautiful sound, rubbing noises aside, I'm guessing it's really a re-branded Bush, Pye, Sobel or some such thing. The "cheshire cat" radio control layout seems more continental, but I guess everyone imitated it at one time or an other; I've even seen US-made RCA export models (no Nipper emblems) with it. I have a US made Majestic from the 1940s, but it seems that after the war, they were just an importer or maybe the name was used under license. PS: Never heard of Ferguson, but if that "radiogram" is any indication, they must have been pretty good.

Why would you burn the motor out if the thermostat was stuck open? I used to own a Shelby Charger that had that problem and the engine basically never got hot, at least not during the winter. I was driving one night for hours and I pulled over to get gas and I don't remember what made me think of it, but I checked the radiator and it was cool. So I popped the radiator cap off and the anti-freeze was ice cold.
