Hey guys, just a note about that verse you liked that said, "Gollum and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her....I guess I'll keep on rambling' on" In the movie, "Lord Of The Rings" Gollum is that creepy little hunched over character from the story. "Gollum was a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk who lived near the Gladden Fields. In The Lord of the Rings it is stated that he was originally known as Sméagol, corrupted by the One Ring, and later named Gollum after his habit of making "a horrible swallowing noise in his throat".

Oh, yeah, that bass is like a bubbling fountain. I have been going back over Zepplin through various reactors solely for JPJ's bass line. It's like watching a movie for the performance of a single actor. Still, enjoy the vocals & guitar & drums, but ever since JPJ's contribution to the Playing for Change version of "When the Levee Breaks" I have been all about that bass line.

I am sitting here a bit envious. I remember what a natural high this song gave me at 14-15 years old. That feeling when you hear a song for the first time and you immediately know you love it. "What is and What should never be" is but yet another masterpiece by The greatest Band ever. If you haven't reacted to it yet, please do so.

One of Zeppelin's best songs. It tells a tale, and really displays their range from soft to loud, and back down again. Both in the instrumentation, and in Plan'ts voice which was at its best here. "Light and shade" as the band referred to it.

First off, there base line might be the best ever. Not really technically difficult, but is what drives this song throughout its entire length. And Robert Plant was a huge Tolkien fan and works Lord of the Rings references in a few songs. In the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair. But Gillum, the evil one, crept up and slipped away with her. A veiled comparison of a girl to The Precious Ring

I love the surprise on your faces when the song took a dark turn - "Gollum and the evil one..." This song is actually inspired by Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and the Lord of the Rings. Gollum is the character who wants the ring so badly that he eventually dies trying to keep it. Zeppelin fans have speculated that the "girl" stolen by Gollum is actually the ring, and the one 'rambling on' is Bilbo Baggins, but the lyrics are (as LZ often did) ambiguous enough that the song could be interpreted in many ways. That is part of the fun of Led Zeppelin. Their lyrics were full of fantasy and intrigue, forcing the listeners to use our imagination.

The band wrote two other songs that clearly make reference to The Lord of the Rings. One is No Quarter, which is about being forced to go through the mines of Moria. The part in it talking about the "Dogs of Doom" comes from the book but was left you of the movie. On their retreat from the mountain to Moria, they are attacked by wolves (possibly werewolves) .The other song is The Battle of Evermore, which is about The Battle of the Pelennor Fields in front of Minas Tirith. The female vocals in it are by Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention. Both are also great songs.

There are things in life that are known, and then there are things in life that can never be known. I have seen things you wouldn't believe, such a learnt perspective only informs Zeppelin will forever be, unknown until known. From the J.R.R. Tolkien book "The Hobbit" (precursor to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy) is where some of the lyrics come from - "From the darkest depths or Mordor, there lived a girl so fair, but Gollum and the evil one, crept up and slipped away with her." The "girl so fair" was the magic ring he was after. I remember hearing this song when it first came out and having to listen to it a few times to confirm what I thought I heard which was from the book I had read a few year previously.
