It’s very brave of them to flip the stereotypes by having the WLW couple silently pine for years and having the MLM couple fall for each other in like two days.

Yes and the women got the sexual-tension filled rivalry, bigger than reality problems, super complicated history, while the guys got to be the super suportive, just click together, cutesy ones. A flip of action show shows and the most popular fanfics they sprout (disclaimer: NOT saying there's few MLM coffee shop AUs, just that most popular ones build on the canon rivalry for MLM and the girl's friendships for WLW)

I think the reason lesbian relationships are more tolerated in media than gay male relationships. Is the heterosexual male gaze. It's always kind of been there as long as the women are attractive and fit the conventional beauty standards of heterosexual men then it can exist in a show. If the lesbian relationships is between to butch women it's usually portrayed as a joke.

Something that I truly love about them is how they fall for each other almost instantly. No pinning, no friends before boyfriends, they were simply attracted to the other and were flirting and seeing how the other took it. That has always thrown me off because in all representations of vampires the are stuck in the state they were turned (which we see in Marcie being forever stuck as early to late 20s)

One thing I noticed, while watching your video that I didn’t really realize until now is that Gary and Marshall have an interesting dynamic with their romance. Almost like a good parallel, but with a different twist compared to Simon and Betty. Marshall was about to be under his mom’s thumb for the good of giving up his dream so that Gary could have his dream. But Gary found out what was going on, told off his mom, and then left with Marshall. Contrast this with Betty and Simon, where Betty gave up/was willing to give up everything just to live Simon’s dream, and Simon didn’t really notice/consider what she was giving up for him. Gary, on the other hand, saw his own relationship, and decided to be happy with Marshall instead. I don’t know, I thought it was a great contrast

There's so much power in the way they're depicted. I also gotta say that as a queer black guy, it's nice that it was an interracial queer relationship -- it's not a topic talked about enough, but there can be a LOT of racism from many sides within dating, especially in queer dating, and you can be seen in a negative light (or even be labeled a traitor of some kind) for dating interracially. It's an extremely important to normalize, so nobody feels like race plays a barrier in who they should or shouldn't love.

It's also impressive that they're allowed to just be themselves without dealing with homophobia or questioning why they like men all of a sudden. The relationship feels like two guys who happened to crush on each. It also skips a lot of toxic yaoi tropes. Ex: hyper sexualized couples, misogyny, one of the boys is clearly portrayed as a woman, partner can only show or admit affection when drunk, and the classic overly jealous/protective boyfriend that's borderline abusive.

MARCY DESERVES BETTER!” You guys realize that Marceline has done messed up psycho stuff in the past too, right? And coming from someone who was there every step of the way, learning more about PB’s checkered past is actually what made her more interesting as a character and her whole arc was so satisfying to witness. She learned to become less tyrannical with her kingdom and more friendly and understanding, which eventually led to her and Marcy getting back together. People always seem to miss that nowadays. Were some of the things she did messed up and immoral? Yes. No one is denying that. The show itself pointed it out MANY times. People just seem to forget why she was the way she was for so long, that she did genuinely care for the well-being of other people, and just went too far in doing it. She went though so much development and came out the end a much better person who is capable of love and being loved. I'm 30 years old and it is mind boggling how far LGBT+ rep has come in my lifetime. Especially given that most of the progress has come within the last several years of my lifetime. The closest thing I had to gay rep when I was little was me somehow missing that Phar Fignewton from the Animaniacs was a girl (I still knew she and Pinky were a couple, toddler me just thought they were both boys. They were a mouse and horse, them being gay would've been the least weird thing about that couple). The first Ruby/Sapphire moment in Steven Universe happened when I was 22. The Ruby/Sapphire wedding and Adventure Time finale kiss for Bubbline happened when I was 25. Gary and Marshall only just happened a few months before I turn 31.

I'm an openly gay man, I love cartoons and anime, and I thank you SO MUCH from the bottom of my heart for making this video and addressing the disparity between representation for queer women and queer men, ESPECIALLY in western animation. This is something I've been hurt by and infuriated about for so long (and still to this day, let's be honest; it's still very much a thing) and you might be one of the only content creators I've EVER seen acknowledging it, which is insane in it of itself. I always got annoyed at hearing about shows with "Great lgbt representation" when that representation somehow never seemed to apply to me. Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Avatar TLOK, the Owl House, the fact that the wueer couple in Gravity Falls got SO MUCH praises even though they were the biggest most irrelevant tokens I've ever seen in anything (not to mention they have a great total of ZERO redeeming qualities) Say what you will about how rushed and insultingly neglected Shiro's gay identity/relationships were, it legitimately meant A LOT to me at the time, and even still now, to have a confirmed openly gay character I could actually look up to because I hadn't ever gotten that before (and, again, when it comes to western animation and popular mangas/anime (HORRIFYINGLY homophobic depictions of queer men from Puri Puri Prisonner to Lussuria to that guy in Inuyasha that wanted to cut guys' faces and lick them, to One Piece who portrayed us as a bunch of disgustingly ugly exclusively drag performers who all lived on an island together, tried to force straight guys to put dresses on, and came off super rapey in general). So, again, thanks man, it really means a lot. I love Gary and Marshall, they're the kind of characters I wish I'd gotten growing up.

I feel the same way. It's incredibly infuriating seeing everyone continue to praise cartoons for LGBT rep, when every single time it's a wlw relationship. The Legend of Korra, Steven Universe, She-Ra, The Owl House, Adventure Time, OK KO... And even Star vs The Forces of Evil and Amphibia ended up confirming major characters as bi. All of them ever increasingly praised for breaking barriers in representation, and all of them being women. So much talk of cartoons having great LGBT rep, and I as a gay man still can't relate to a single one of them, because representation for us is nonexistent aside from background token characters with no relevance. The only rep I've seen for me was Ben and Troy from Kipo (and now obviously Gumlee). But it is still immensely obvious the difference in content between wlw and mlm. And the worst thing is, nobody seems to notice, or care. It's insanely infuriating seeing everyone constantly praising the amount of LGBT rep in western animation, while there really is none for us.

@@Egg-Thor queer masc myself, while I wouldn't say I can't relate to wlw queer pairings at all, on some level their victories are our victories as all queer people are lacking in representation and their portrayals, for better or for worse, don't take away from ours or take up space where mlm relationships should've been, I do share the frustration with mlm pairings so far not having caught up in queer depictions in media. Here's hoping that tide changes soon and never falls back. I think the fact there's a lot of comments here sharing our stories and experiences show a lot of people do care about queer men, we just need to keep speaking out and causing a ruckus about it, as Chorus did with this video and as we are now. it sucks we have to fight and be pushy about needing to feel seen, valid, and normal to make it happen, but that's always been the lot of queer folks, men, women, enbys, trans people, and everyone inbetween. Maybe someday we won't have to fight the good fight, but that day only comes when we speak out now. Solidarity for fem queers, I reiterate their fight is our fight and their victories our victories too, but absolutely keep banging the drum and demanding more positive mlm depictions in media too.

If so, does that not suggest, at least a little bit, that at the moment it's more acceptable to have, say, a Marceline X Bubblegum in your tv shows, than say, a Marshall and Gary? I'm not denying we still have a long ways to go for lesbian acceptance and that lesbians could absolutely stand to have more representation, but that doesn't change the fact that it does seem like tv networks sign off on more wlw pairings than mlm, and that it does signify that wlw pairings are deemed somewhat more acceptible. Recognizing there's a lack of mlm pairings compared to wlw pairings doesn't detract from the fact we still need more wlw pairings. Two things can be true at once.

If you ever heard someone seeing two lesbians in public and calling them "good friends", then thats why. Women could be full on making out and people will bend over backwards to act like they're just friends. But on the flipside, men are seemingly not allowed to express any affection towards their male friends, or else its automatically "gay" (read: bad). 2:43 In fairness of Black Butler anime when mentioning how queer representation wasn't the best... Grell Sutcliff wasn't ever meant to portray a gay man, she's trans in canon. Although a lot of translations erased this from her character, causing a big misunderstanding on what she actually was. All of her flamboyancy and cross dressing is just her fantasizing on what she wants to look like with a female body. While I agree not all anime did queer representation very well, I don't believe using Grell is a good implicit example because she's not even canonically queer, she prefers men.

I also think the fact Garry says oh he hot to the scarreb shows he into the bad boys he can fix. If a second season happens I really want to see them on the adventure as well. Another Intresting dynamic is the fact the female fern and DJ Flame Prince might be a couple meaning that DJFP might of left fionna for a woman that look similar which could be a Intresting tension and if the world had been fixed that would of been a fire shipped with a clump of grass. I think the two would have similar trauma and turmoil to make it work, but that a whole nother ship that could be way big in the next season

Fun Fact: According to the creator of Fionna & Cake, Natasha Allegri, before the whole Golb reset debacle there history was similar, yet not identical to the main series. A notable example of this would be Ice Queen, in F&C's universe she was a water nymph and renown cat-lover who used to own a cat that was heavily implied to be Cake before she suffered a mortal injury, only for the cat to retrieve a magical jewel that saved her life, but at the cost of sapping her sanity and granting her the powers of the ice and snow. It was because of this reason that i was watching this ship with baited breath, was history going to repeat? Or was it just going to be bait? And with Hindsight as our ally we know exactly what happened.

As someone with some more old fashion views on parings (Not that I found anything wrong with anyone's sexuality), I'll admit that the steady progress of LGBTQ pairings has helped me ease into a more positive mindset. Still a bit Iffy on male parings, but I think me and a few other will change our tune for the better if we keep getting exposed to stuff like Gary X Marshall. Slow and steady wins the race

It's totally normal to not be able to immediately accept all this sudden progress after having been raised with old fashioned views. And I applaud you immensely for having an open mind. As a gay man I tell you, don't feel guilty for still being iffy on male gay relationships. Unlearning previous behaviours and beliefs takes time, the important thing is that you're trying. We gay people are no different than you. We have existed for all of human history, we aren't trying to hurt anyone, the only thing we want is to be able to love each other freely. One day you will completely unlearn your past old fashion views and you will see us as the normal couples that we are. Thank you for trying and keep on at it.

Man, I think Chorus has a pretty great community on this channel.

It may be a bit of a soliloquy but when I was younger I was really into the fantasy of harems that I later realized was kind of ironically born for my anxiety and fear of being close to people, to anyone that decide to partake to my rambling I just want to say both a twisted blessing and also a relieving curse in that you're not alone no matter what it seems like sometimes especially with the things that are screamed by people that are terrified of everything that they don't see in the mirror or sometimes of things that they do seem to mirror but are terrified of nonetheless. Therapy and groups were always too personal for me so I started to volunteer at soup kitchens that way it wasn't about me being weak and pathetic it instead was about helping others that had a hard turn of life which was just the motivation that I needed on my bumpy road to being less broken.

It also dawned on me that Gary and Marshal got right what Simon and Betty got wrong: balancing when to sacrifice what you want for your partner and when to follow your dreams. Yeah, Marshal was prepared to give up his lifestyle to give Gary a chance to find an investor for his business. When Gary found that out, he gave up the second chance to save Marshal from his mom. They were able to both get what they want in the end, but both were willing to sacrifice for each other and everything worked out.

Havent watched this video fully yet but I gotta say I didn’t like the ship of Pb and Marceline since at the start it seemed to be shipped simply for the fun of it and not because it was natural However with how it went later on it was more natural. Gary and Marshall on the other hand had already felt natural at the first moment they met and every additional scene melted them stronger together

I feel like the fact that they even gave us Bubbleine was super progressive for a kids show at the time... they did it... I MEAN they *actually* did it...🥺 As an elder millennial who was shamed & called confused all through my lifetime seeing a FLF relationship represented for all the kids like me who never got that... 😭 They 100% drug their feet on it & made huge mistakes... but... bear in mind the kids who started watching this show were in elementary school & there's a fine line between romance and intimacy too...they touched on crushes and romance but the incel slug, & Jake and rainicorns implied *ahem* "swanning" was the peak A.T. romance for about 4 seasons. Bubpire vibes were still there even in the F&C fanfic episodes. Don't get it twisted... *WE STAN TF OUT OF GARY & MARSHALL* but... when you consider that men get literally everything first, "I do feel kinda vindicated." 🤔😂

Also another thing that just adds to how cool gumlee is as a ship: Andrew Rannells, the new voice for Gumball (Gary), early on in his acting career had a contract with 4Kids, where he did voice overs for various anime and video games. This is relevant because he's gone on to say in multiple interviews how humiliating it was at times, like the time he was encouraged to play a very stereotypically gay depiction of James for Pokemon Live (apparently he was literally cast because of this, and was actively told to play it up when auditioning). Kind of like with Donald Glover being able to voice an undeniably Black character in Marshall Lee, it's just extremely cool to see Andrew's return to voice acting after making it in the industry as a non-stereotypical, openly gay character that he chose to voice on his own terms, and not just because he needed the gig. Some rly great progress all around here :)

I know the creator has been caught up in some scandals regarding how she treats her staff, but I don't see what that has to do with the characters they created together or how they're represented. The protagonist of the show is by no means a good person, he's an extremely flawed person. But that is intentional.
